This is a very good, above average 60s song album.

It surely shows an influence from the American mid 60s psych-pop scene. The simple organ/bass and rhythm guitars with lead vocals make it also fit to the earlier garage/ballad pop styles. Especially the Korean songs are a bit softer, directing towards more mainstream or crooner style, still the 60s feel dominates everywhere, with a certain grace. We also have several covers, like “Feeling So Good” (The Archies) with some wa-papapaa background vocals, sung like a rather garage-styled early/mid 60s ballad.

More relaxed is the second track, with Korean lyrics, where there’s a fuzz guitars intro, and we also hear some relaxed organ and rhythm guitars in it, with a certain echo effect on the voice that takes it a bit further to the background.

The next cover is “These Eyes” (The Guess Who), sung in Korean only, played with organ, rhythm guitar, a relaxed high lead voice, showing certain emotionality in the singing. “Jean” (from…?) is more in the direction of a sad crooner singing, with rhythm guitar pickings chords and organ chords. “War (huh What is it good for?)” (Edwin Star) is recognisable as a soul cover with its typical to the song, rather rocking guitar accents.

This is followed by “I started Joke” (Bee Gees?), in a 60 style, and again with a certain emotionality in the singing, rhythm guitar and organ chords, as a good mid 60s ballad.

This is followed by a Korean song (organ, rhythm guitars), with sad high lead vocals) and another Korean, breathy soft melancholic crooner/ballad (rhythm guitar and organ accents), and one more Korean softer song, the band playing minimal in it (organ/rhythm guitar). The next cover is “Let It Be” (Beatles) first led in theme by organ, with partly Korean lyrics, and after another organ outro, showing a wilder electric guitar solo (plus drum/organ).

“Purple Haze” (Jimi Hendrix) shows heavy fuzz guitar from the start combined with bass, relaxed organ and drumming, also here the singer starts to sing in a wilder way and with more emotionality.

The last track is a cover of “Sweet Caroline” (Neil Diamond) with Korean lyrics, played with relaxed drum and a bit of organ, like a relaxed crooner, it also includes a bit of sax.

<한국 록 음반 사상 가장 희귀한 아이템, ‘아이들’의 데뷔앨범> 록 역사상 가장 뛰어난 밴드 중 하나인 <사랑과 평화>의 음악적 뿌리인 록 밴드 <아이들>음반이 43년 만에 다시 세상 빛을 보게 되어 반갑다. 이 음반은 오랫동안 일반대중에게는 존재자체가 무색했지만 한국 록 마니아라면 누구나 수집 아이템으로 군침을 흘려온 그야말로 한국 록 음반사에 숨겨진 희귀음반이다. 또한 국내 최초로 ‘IDOL'이란 표기가 등장하는 음반이기에 한국 ‘아이돌 음악’의 뿌리 찾기에 더없이 소중한 사료로 손색이 없다. 밴드 <아이들>의 음악적 중심인 최이철의 음악적 재능은 타고난 것이었다. 미8군에서 재즈 트럼펫 연주자로 활약했던 아버지 최경용은 수원고등학교 음악교사 출신이고 어머니는 미8군 가수 출신으로 홍콩에서 탭 댄서로 유명했던 이계원이다. 최이철에게 음악적으로 결정적인 영향을 미친 인물은 트럼펫 연주자인 작은아버지 최상용이다. 음악적인 분위기에서 성장한 그는 이미 17세 때 음악친구인 허경을 비롯해 친구 4명과 밴드를 결성했다. 1969년 고병희(태양음반 대표)의 주선으로 미8군 프로덕션 유니버샬에 소속으로 오디션을 통과해 8군 무대에 섰다. 1시간짜리 패키지 쇼인 ‘데니스 쇼’는 데뷔 무대였다. 멤버들은 당대의 인기 만화 캐릭터인 개구쟁이 데니스로 분장을 해 미군들에게 인기가 높았다. 6개월 후 연주기량이 일취월장하면서 ‘화양’으로 전속 사를 옮겨 당시 천재소녀로 미8군 무대에서 최고의 인기를 구가하던 ‘박활란 쇼’의 백 밴드가 되었다. 미8군 무대에서 ‘음악 신동’이란 칭찬을 들으며 미8군 AFKN방송에도 출연했던 최이철은 밴드 <아이들>시절, 웨스 몽고메리의 음악을 접하면서 리듬이 좋은 흑인음악에 빠져들었다. 당시 칙 코리아, AWB 등의 음악에 충격을 받은 그는 이내 흑인 훵키 리듬의 추종자가 되었다. 1년간의 미8군 생활 후 부산 등 지방 무대에 섰던 최이철은 “음악을 제대로 배워야겠다.”는 마음에 신중현의 음악 스승이었던 이화여대 이교숙 교수에게 화성학을 배우고 이판근에게 재즈의 기본을 배우며 음악적 기초를 닦았다. 1970년 본격적으로 자신이 하고 싶은 블랙 뮤직을 하기 위해 미8군 무대를 떠나 서울 명동의 ‘오비스 캐빈’, ‘닐바나’ 등 수많은 클럽무대에서 연주활동을 이어갔다. 그때 재즈 드러머 김대환의 주선으로 6인조 록 밴드 <아이들(IDOL)>을 정식으로 결성해 레이블 성음사를 통해 역사적인 첫 음반을 발표했다. 1971년 2월의 일이다. 이후 일반무대와 미8군 무대를 병행해 활동을 했다. 당시 미8군에서 이들이 훵키음악을 연주한 미8군 클럽에는 늘 흑인들로 꽉 찼다. 그때 이들과 친했던 흑인병사 내무반에 갔을 때 “음악 하는 사람들도 아닌데 '왔냐'는 일상적인 인사에도 리듬감이 있었다.”고 한다. 훵키 리듬자체는 뭐라고 딱 단정 지을 수는 없지만 음악을 듣는 사람들을 흥분하게 만드는 리듬인 것은 분명한 것 같다. 60년대 <벤쳐스>, <비틀스> 이후에 소울 뮤직이 나왔고 훵키는 70년대를 지나면서 디스코 음악으로 절정을 이뤘는다. 70년대에 미국 밴드들은 훵키음악을 하면서 랩을 잠깐잠깐 넣었던 시절이 있었다. 최이철도 그런 식으로 무대에서 랩을 최초로 시도했던 인물이었다. 최이철은 “솔직히 데뷔시절엔 음악이 뭔지도 몰랐다. 지금은 변했지만 옛날에는 트로트나 포크송을 아주 싫어했던 특이한 아이였다. 요즘 이 음반을 다시 들어보니 좀 민망한 것도 사실이지만 당시 '아이들' 음반은 일반인들이 상상할 수 없는 아주 독특한 음반이었다.”고 회고한다. 한국 록 음반 사상 초 희귀 아이템으로 명성이 자자한 록 밴드 <아이들>의 음반은 사실 본격적인 흑인 훵키 사운드로 무장한 앨범은 아니다. 창작곡과 외국 히트 팝송, 사이키델릭 등 다양한 장르의 음악이 수록되어있다. 현재 최이철은 한국 록의 거장으로 대접받지만 당시는 설익은 데뷔 시절이었기에 음악적 탐색기였음을 증명하는 대목이다. 고로 이 음반은 음악적 완성도보다는 그 사료적 가치로 무게중심을 이동할 수밖에 없다. 하지만 모든 것에는 시작이 중요하듯 한국 록의 대중화를 꽃피웠던 <사랑과 평화>는 이 앨범이 있었기에 가능했을 것이다. 글=최규성

“I honestly didn't know what music was when I made my debut. Now it was changed, but in the old days, it was an unusual child who hated trot and folk songs. It's true that I'm embarrassed to hear this record again these days, but at that time the 'children' album was a very unique record that the general public can't imagine. ” The rock band 'Children', which is famous for being a rare item in Korean rock records, is not an album armed with authentic black hotky sounds. In 1969, under the direction of Ko Byung-hee (Sun Records Representative), he joined the 8th Army Production Universal and passed the audition to the 8th Army stage. The one-hour package show, "Denis Show," was his debut stage. The members were dressed up as naughty Dennis, a popular cartoon character of the time, and were very popular with the US military. Six months later, his performance shifted to Hwayang, and became the back band of the 'Bae Hee Lan Show', which was the most popular genius girl on the eighth Army stage.

Choi Yi-cheol, who appeared on the US Eighth Army AFKN broadcast, listening to the praise of “music prodigy” on the US Eighth Army stage, and fell in love with the rhythm of black music while listening to Wes Montgomery's music. Shocked by the music of Chick Korea and AWB, he soon became a follower of the black Yocky rhythm. Choi Yi-cheol, who has been on stages in Busan and other countries after a year of living in the US Army, said, “I must learn music properly. He continued playing on numerous club stages such as 'Obis Cabin' and 'Nirvana' in Myeong-dong, Seoul. At the time, the jazz drummer Kim Dae-hwan organized the six-member rock band "IDOL" and released his first historical album through the label Sungeumsa. It is February 1971. Since then, he has worked in parallel with the general stage and the Eighth Army stage.

At that time, the Eighth Army club, where they played Hotkey music in the Eighth Army, was always filled with black people. When I went to the black soldiers' quarters, they said, "I'm not a music player. The Hot-key rhythm itself can't be justified, but it's obvious that it's the rhythm that makes the listeners excited. Soul music came out after 'Ventures' and 'The Beatles' in the '60s, and Hotkey culminated in disco music through the' 70s. In the '70s, there was a time when American bands put a rap for a while with hot-key music. Choi was also the first person to try rap on stage like that.

“I honestly didn't know what music was when I made my debut. Now it was changed, but in the old days, it was an unusual child who hated trot and folk songs. It's true that I'm embarrassed to hear this album again these days, but at that time the 'children' / Idol album was a very unique record that the general public can't imagine. ” The rock band <Children>, a renowned rare item in Korean rock records, is not actually an album armed with authentic black hot-key sounds. Various genres of music including original songs, foreign hit pop songs, and psychedelic songs are included. Choi is currently treated as a master of Korean rock, but at the time, he proved to be a musical explorer because of his undeserved debut. Therefore, this record has no choice but to shift its center of gravity to its feed value rather than musical perfection. But as everything started out, Love and Peace, which blossomed the popularization of Korean rock, would have been possible because of this album.
