V.A.: 가요 박물관 "Gayo Museum" Best 220 (10cd-box)

CD1, the 50s, an early achieved freedom in expression...

In the 50s musically there was no restriction, and the music very much was flourishing and developing, using the elements developed under Japanese education, restriction and adaptation, using a certain westernisation, a context of ballroom music, adapting elements of a creative new folklore song style, with at it’s weirdest an operette-like folklore vibrato in the voice, that can have a schlager-like association. Elsewhere it almost sounds more like classical singing. But other voices express more direct emotional strength in their singing or a somewhat more westernised singing. The musical themes can adapt elements of mambo or chachacha. Compared to all other periods, this still might be my favourite one. The first CD is dedicated to that period.

Na Ae Sim seems to be one of the most exceptional voices. “Do not ask the past” is a very direct song, also very directly inspired, with piano and violin only and some accordion only, a strong song. Also the 8th track is a powerful song by her and her powerful emotional voice, showing exceptional, universal qualities. This track has a few accordion solos.

From the other tracks, there’s much variation in the arrangements. The combo can show a bit of jazz influence, or a sax / accordion solo. There can be acoustic picking leads (not sure by which instrument). There are a few tracks, with song, with a tango context. A few tracks are more eastern-sounding.

Strange is track 4 by Lee Sohn, showing a western movie-like song/voice with walking boot rhythm on guitar picking, and a whistling solo in the song. Track 16 has a Hawaiian electric guitar and song theme. Every track is very good.

CD2, the heights of ballroom music...

The second CD continues with this early period. Most tracks are “eastern style” or early from a trot influence, often mixed with chachacha and a touch of combo jazz. Every track is good.

For those interested, I will go a bit into detail.

- The track by Hwang Jung-Ja starts with a traditional Korean tune, an introduction before a cheery-up chachacha played by a jazz combo, which I guess is the interpretation of a folk song.

- The Nam In Soo song is a happy marching song with band and walking flute solos.

- The Yun Il Roo song is another light-happy jazzy chachacha with a good arrangement of old time jazz brass with accents on wooden block.

- Also the track by Domi is happy, where an acoustic guitar plays a light melody, the band arrangements with accordion and other instruments sound a bit like the automated bar music that I know from the 20s/30s which were based upon such combos. It features some string parts too.

- A favourite is the Nam In-Su track. It suddenly features a known tune on Hawaiian guitar (wish I knew which one). It’s singing is light and happy, and for me it reminds me slightly of Japanese folk. It has nice arrangements of flute and accordion.

- The Baek Ya-Sung song has a boogie electric guitar intro and a few more parts, but is arranged with small string combo. Also this has medley references to certain melodies (but again, I cannot recall which one). It is slightly eastern and very entertaining.

- An Da-Seong’s track is a jazz cover with good brass arrangements of a western song, which translation goes “Cherry Rose Mambo” (not sure of the original title) , this is a happy song too. It has a small part in English, a chachacha rhythm and accordion / sax solos.

- The Song Min-Do track is a waltz song, again it is happy ballroom music.

- The track by Kim Yong-Ma and Baek Ya-Sung is sung with vocal harmonies, incorporating a known western marching jazz band theme (like a recognising point) but while remaining an independent inspiration. Also here, some jazz influence to the ballroom entertainment is heard.

- Within the track by An Da-Seong can be heard more great jazz influence and great tango interpretation (mixed with chachacha), with good guitar work too.

- Another favourite arrangement can be heard in the rather eastern melody with instruments like accordion and electric guitar, playing the melody leads, sung by An Jung-Ae.

- Nam In Soo sings a rather jumpy-rhythmic folk tune, with now and then / here and there louder power in his voice. The lead melody is either played by strings, reeds or by acoustic guitars.

- Yun Il Ro’s song is a light waltz.

- The technique of heavier vibrato in the voice can be heard with more singers, like in the Kim Yong-Man track where he’s singing in eastern style while being accompanied by acoustic guitars and accordion and some clarinet. In this track, a bit of female spoken word is added too telling the story in a theatrical way, like I know this style from Japanese examples too. It is a very nice idea.

- The next Yun Il Ro track is led by electric guitar/accordion shows the same heavy vibrato in voice, eastern style. Also here is a female voice added telling the story. A dramatic, rather sad story, it seems.

- Also Choi Sook-Ja as a female voice sings with the same technique of a strong vibrato, while being accompanied mostly by strings and accord

ion.

- Yim Ja’s track shows an eastern style, strings, the use of vibes, electric guitar solo’s, it also features in between spoken word like emotional talk.

- Nam In Soo is also known for his heavier vibrato in the voice, singing louder with it here and there. His band features clearly accordion.

- The track by Gwon Hyeg Yeong / Hyon Mi (??) is a humpapa waltz, humpapa.

- Park Jae-Hong’s track features banjo with orchestra and clear use of accordion.

- Nam Sang-Kyu’s track is accompanied melodically by flute, while also the accordion answers the main themes, a chachacha.

- Different is the last track by Lee Mi Ja because it shows a bigger band arrangement, it also sounds later in style, not sure if keyboards are added here already. But new certainly is drums and electric bass. It adds technically more effect, but at the same time with it some of it’s charm and colour variety in the arrangements is lost with it’s introduction. This way, such arrangements sound more prepared before the adaptation to the song, already more a direction of not expression based, but bigger public-directed entertainment.

CD3, nice Americanisations of styles, as a way of modernisation...

CD 3 starts with an Arirang group singing with a band, one of the most known national traditionals, here performed with backing choir vocal arrangements that make it sound more as if in a classical musical context. You can hear how they show how different elements will be introduced and will also mostly leave the new folk style influence behind, leaving the combo and strings still a bit in reach. Introduced were already the electric guitar, (listen also to some boogie guitar on track 6), which will dominate a bit more with a different influence now and then with the use of Hawaiian guitar (track 7 to start with), also with Hawaiian songs (track 18). More Western influences will be added, and in fact by covering American and even European hits they will add with it a fresh influence. First the singing will be a bit more Western (Oh-Ki-Taek to start with, soulful and being successful in this approach). It will finally leave the cabaret and bring in associations of for instance Western movies (track 12), or will sing early 60s pop, introducing also harmony vocals (track 12 again and track 16, in 50s style). From the girl bands that are included, especially the Lee Sisters, in Andrew Sisters style were very good and also with a fresh new successful style. The arrangements will be more direct and sparser, with congas, for instance, while at first the accordion, strings and combo band still being present or available. The Chung Sisters sing the “Dominique” song from the Belgian Singing Nun. Monica Yoo’s band shows electric rock’n roll guitar, which is also new. The English songs, even in cabaret-like context (“Cute Baby” from Kim Hee-Ya) sounds great.

ref. "Pretty Little Baby"

CD4, the ballad approach...

The next CD seems to have collected the romantic ballads and songs, a positive vibe without any exaggeration. It is the foundation for the later safe ballad approach. This is still good, without being too mellow, with American songs and a few tracks in traditional new folk style. I recognise that the more melancholic slow rumba “To Tokyo, from Seoul” in fact comes from another song, so it might be a cover (Gershwin? or in fact coming close to Nat king Cole’s “Nature Boy”). The last track of this compilation is an original Keyboys folk interpretation, who with his group sound that predates the psychedelic sound, is a nice creative compromise with folk style when adapting it in a rock context, as a perfect compromise.

CD5, the crooner approach..

The fifth CD shows the crooners-related songs and style following in this period. This includes a few American covers, new pop and new folk songs (continuing in the Trot tradition, in a predictable rhythm, and with ok or good arrangements. We have some Elvis-like (track 2) and Roy Orbinson-alike (track 11) and other crooner-like songs. Arrangements still include electric picking guitar everywhere, less often are accordion, which is now more often replaced by organ, but the strings are always there. “Lovers" by Heyon Mi is a rockier sort of crooner. Exceptional, and to take out is the well interpreted cover “Sing Sing Sing” by Lee Keum-Hee, who shows a good singing voice, singing with a powerful swinging jazz background. Her voice and interpretation has international appeal. Also Yun Bok-Hee also has a rather good voice and also sings with a jazz background. Bon Bon (track 15) is a good boys harmony band, who performs a very good vocal harmony interpretation with voices. I have later album with mid to late 60s sound, this has an earlier sound. Comparable in the context is track 21, by the Johnny Brothers, showing healthy boys group singing like government music of positive vibe promotion, with rather jazzy rather marching background. Also the last track (track 22) by Bon Bon again is such a voice of positive nationalism, a track called “Bravo Marine corps”, with a rather uplifting marching rolling rhythm and singing and clapping and bravo shouting. This is already from a different area, perfect as last few tracks. In between those tracks I still wanted to mention the track of Kim Serena (track 19) which shows how to interpret Korean folk in p’ansori tradition while being accompanied perfectly fitting with a mainstream jazz/plucked strings arrangement.

CD6, early 60 Western styled songs.. and the introduction of harmony singers..

The 6th CD continues to show the in fact rather matured and also rather completely Westernised style of song music, which comes close to American crooner music from the late 50s, early 60s, in the most tasteful way. The atmosphere is always warm, the voices professional. Patty Kim’s voice for instance is soulful. Yig Yu-Hang’s low cowboy voice voice (track 2) is like singing a song from a western movie, with lush strings and electric guitar. Cha Joong-Rak’s voice (Key Boys) has something of a slow Elvis Presley singing and also on track 8 he has something of Roy Orbinson. Also a voice like Bae-Ho who is working in the mainstream popular music area (almost schlager-like at times, still in a good way) still distinguishes himself with it’s voice qualities. The rhythms are always easy pop rhythms. One track (17) was a tango song with strings and accordion lead. The last few tracks show harmony singers too. Lee Sisters first track (19) is a twist with early 50s harmonies. BonBon’s male harmony singing is warm and pleasant too. The last track (Choi Jeong-Ja) is new Korean folk in a Trot context (strings, easy arrangement but Korean folk-inspired rhythms/melody).

CD7, the addition of twist and psych-pop influences

The next disc shows a continuation of the positive energy gradually bringing it to a next level of expression, in this case with the welcome expression of early pop-psych & a few extracting elements with a twist/rock’n roll-area reference, most often still in slow song mode. Several tracks on this disc refer to early He5 and it’s singers. Strings are used less often here, and more heard are the electric rhythm guitar, a bit of brass and melodic/moody organ and piano. From the singers, also Han Sang-Ill sounds a bit Roy Orbinson-like. Fanny Sisters are another band of early harmony singers. Also their accompaniment is more with organ/sax. Most clearly going into the psych/pop/rock direction is the track by Yan Mi Lahn (organ, fuzz guitar, organ, drum & bass, sax).

CD8, the change towards guitar folk with singer/songwriter..

On the 8th disc, the delicate guitar folk scene has been presented and introduced. Park In Hee’s track is still in between worlds, with organ/piano/vibraphone and violin, her singing in waltz style and with spoken word already fits with that. From this scene, I have already reviewed before Toi et Moi (guitar/harmony vocals) and Yu Seok-Suh (two picking guitars and warm voice and subtle harmonies). Similar to this are Yoon Hyung-Ju, Hong Min, Seo Yoo-Seok & Song Chang-Sik. And also the further on the CD listed Lee Pil-Won, and the duo Choo An-Soo with Ebonys. With a bit more folk-rock in its sound we have the track by the Sesam Trio (jazz flute solos, picking, bass, drums) showing also some harmony vocals further in the song where its singing movement goes from folk-rock to a slightly crooner style, varying in an original, inspired way.

The Lily Sisters fit with the earlier harmony girl groups, while they are accompanied by acoustic guitars and flute, fitting this time with the folk singers movement.

The track by Kim In-Soon is a more pop orientated song, accompanied by a barrel organ-like rhythm, is performed up-tempo and with violins to it. Lee Yun-Sil sounds also like mainstream Pop, while it’s accompaniment at the same time is influenced by the folk movement. You hear a folkier singing, very lightly sounding rhythms and arrangement between something acoustic (with flutes and such) and is programmed.

The track by Im Sung-Hoon is a mainstream song but with electric guitar pickings, also here the rhythmic arrangements are light.

The Park-In Soo track is a good rockabilly track with special way of singing, with sax, electric rhythm guitar and strangely enough also folk violin in the background. I hear the word “Suspicion”, but the track translation states “Suspected love”.

The track by Lee Seong-Ae is very good jazz swing with some convincing jazz singing. Real pop/rock with psych associations (nice organ and electric guitar harmonies, good song and arrangement) is provided by Devils, a great track.

Fitting strangely well with the jazz pop track of before that is the cover of “Champs Elisee”, a 60s folk/pop rocker sung by Sun Woo-Sung. It features a bit of harmony singing and a clarinet solo. Then we also have a folk-rock interpretation of “Green one hundred dollars”, sung completely in English, with nice vocal harmony arrangements, mixed male/female singers, with an almost gospel-like singing.

More arranged than a folk arrangement, with keyboards mostly is the track by Kim Jung Ho, a melancholic track, fitting also a bit more with the crooner style ballads. Also the track by Yun Hang-Ki (with strings and organ, rhythm electric guitar mostly, harmony vocals) fits with that one. The last Hahn Dae So track is a folk-rock hand-clapper, sung in a Dylan fashion, and with a mouth harmonica solo and conga rhythms, organ, drum/guitar strums.

CD9, bigger ballroomentertainment..

The 9th CD clearly shows musical-like versions of songs with orchestra, and at times with near classical singing or at least influenced by Hollywood or otherwise by classical music (especially track 1 which has more operatic vocals). Otherwise it seems as if theatre is involved. Solos and drives are more often provided by accordion. This sounds like music from the 40s but it isn’t (listen to Lee Sohn as an example). Often heard are waltzes. On the track of Mun Jeang-Suk there’s a trumpet solo and a hint to 30s jazz. An Jung-Ae’s track is a tango-like song with Korean folk influences played first by accordion and violin and small orchestra, showing a few strange overdubs of voice, a strange unusual overdub experiment. The track by Na Ae-Sim is in old ballroom style with orchestra. The track by Hwang Keum-Sim is Korean folk with accordion, a small part of Korean clarinet, flute/orchestra and electric bass/accordion. Also the next few tracks are Korean new folk with accordion and orchestra, never too surprising or, except for small details with too distinctive differences in song, arrangements and so on. A nice inclusion is the cover of Rollin’, interpreted well in English by Im Hyeon-Gi, ballroom orchestra and musical-like backing female singers, worth hearing this different version. Equally odd with theatrical movie music brass and strings orchestra and male backing choir is a western-like movie song (Kang Soo-Hyang). The lLast two tracks could have been recorded/produced/mixed better.

CD10, healthy songs and positive vibes..

The first track with orchestra and loud healthy singing, a marching song by Johnny Brothers is a real feel good (perhaps a government commission for a Healthy song?). Also track 6 by Sand Pebbles member Kim Young-Guk gives that impression, singing together vocals and a marching rhythm. Also a later track on the album with Choi Hee-Joon confirms again that positive vibe of harmony singing (heyhoo). Also the Bae-Ho song sounds like a positive vibe song that could still fit in a western movie. Many of the tracks on the last CD are slower songs. The second track by Choi Hee-Joon and the Johnny Brothers reveal besides a slow jazz deep voice slow pop song, a group of male harmony singers singing loud in the background. On the slightly jazzy track by Han Myung-Sook I hear the English words “My Darling.” On the track by Kim Sang-Hee peeps through a Beebop sound. The track by Mun Jeong-Suk sounds a bit Chinese. There are exotic percussive elements. Tommy’s track is a late rock’n roll crooner. Chung Sisters sing with harmony vocals too. It is a slow waltz with strings and flute and could fit in a musical. There’s a real western-imitating typed Twist songs here too, by Twist Kim (a bit like the Japanese would play twist). Another unusual track is by Blue Bells that starts with Spanish acoustic guitars, features lush strings and group harmony singing, another distinctive good track. Last harmony vocals band listed is Fanny Sisters, with a sound that could fit in a musical as well. The last track by Park Tae-Beom is a nicely orchestrated happy waltz.

SP.
