"Track 6 is an entertaining Korean pop song with smile-swing. Just listen how the non-seriousness mixes with something more serious. At a certain stage the singer changes his voice into a Louis Armstrong imitation. First the listener might think what is this ? But I think it is worth talking out and to experience. Track 9 has some funny conversations and a nice electric guitar theme."

I gave this album a few listens and I pretty much enjoyed this one even though it shouldn't be taken too seriously, and, because of this some tracks might need a few listens.

This is light pop/rock with a band capable of showing more. With a foundation of entertainment in general the band's general sound remains gentle and attractive.

The approach in singing in a few tracks however at first listen, sound a bit strange, with a smile. Unless the crooner-like tension in the singing melodies in general, with the addition of a few soft vocal harmonies, and with this attractive soft pop/rock band this becomes something more special.

The band plays their pop/rock style with different electrified guitars and electric bass, drums, warm electric piano and organ, with still a bit more attention to the smooth mainstream song based core than to the progression from within, with an overall sound remains nice to listen to.

Perhaps the second track is the most special one. Here the piano is slightly jazzy, the voice changes and increases a bluesy throat-singing emotionality. This is increased with vibrating organ and electric guitar. And here we also have a beautiful bluesy and rather psychedelic fuzz solo with groovy organ.

The next track repeats the English “Rain Rain Rain” like a lullaby. The fourth track is also with a happy jazzy swing, a entertaining pop/rock song with strangely deformed voice, like Louis Armstrong, with finishing touches of 70s Hammond organ.

The 5th track sounds even less serious and a bit kitschy, with responding group voices, like a dance song to sing along, funny in a way but is one of those tracks absolutely not to take too seriously. And also the next pop-"waltz" is not too serious, uses again strange Louis Armstrong accents, the band keeps its warm sound vivid with its electric piano improvisations. Also the next track has a stomping rhythm.

Then the track after that is rockier again in a happy way. And also the last track has fine electric guitar and some surf chords with the happy pop/rock tunes, with normal and more L.Armstrong-alike vocal parts.

"The band which played for the albums of April & May (DSO-0041) and Two Koreans (DSO-0033) is Dongbang-Ui Bit, which can be translated into "The Light of the Orient." It is a kind of "house band" in the label Orient production which was specialized in Korean "folk rock" and "folk pop" records. The lineup is KANG Geun-sik (g), CHO Won-ik (b), LEE Hojun (k), YOO Young-Soo (d). The band played for the most of the recording sessions for Korean folk singers/groups including the two (vocal) groups above during 1972-1975. If you find the records whose serial numbers are DSO- or SO- style, they are produced by Orient and the band played music for the recorded sounds."

투 코리언스 | 나 그대에게 모두 드리리 / 불 꺼진 창 (1974)

투 코리언스는 김도향과 손창철로 이루어진 듀오로, 1970년에 발표한 데뷔곡 <벽오동>의 히트로 잘 알려졌다. 민요풍의 어렵지 않은 멜로디를 가진 곡이지만, 건장한 두 사내가 토해내는 포효와 같은 목소리는 당시 앞이 보이지 않아 답답했던 소시민들의 심정을 대변하는 배설처럼 대리만족을 주었기 때문이다. 오리엔트를 통해 발표된 투 코리언스의 음반. 과연 이렇게 ‘기차 화통을 삶아 먹은 듯’ 파워풀한 이들의 목소리가 정갈한 동방의 빛의 사운드와 어울릴 수 있을까. 결과적으로 본다면 몇몇 곡을 제외한다면 무척 흥미로운 결과로 도출되었다. 물론 이장희가 이미 발표했던 <나 그대에게 모두 드리리>나 <한잔의 추억>, <그건 너>, 혹은 조영남의 <불 꺼진 창>과 같은 곡들은 기존의 연주들을 그대로 ‘재활용’한 듯 보이지만, 투 코리안스의 독특한 샤우팅과 만담과 같은 대화로 재탄생하며 ‘재미’를 선사한다. 특히 조동진 작곡의 ‘들리지 않네’는 소울풀한 투 코리언스의 매력과 재지한 동방의 빛의 연주가 만난 또 하나의 명곡이다.

Two Koreans | I'll give you everything / burned out window (1974)

Two Koreans is a duo consisting of Kim Do Hyang and Son Chang Chul and was well known for the hit of his debut song Wall Wound in 1970. It is a song with a folk song that is not difficult, but the sound of the roaring voice of two strong men gave a surrogate satisfaction as excretion representing the feelings of small citizens who were frustrated because they couldn't see it at the time. The album of Two Koreans released through Oriental productions. Is it possible that the voices of powerful people, who seem to have boiled down the train barrels, can match the sound of the (session band) Light of the East? As a result, except for a few songs, it was very interesting. Of course, songs such as <I will give you all>, <Memories of a cup>, <That's you>, or Cho Young-nam's <Lighted Spears>, which have already been released, seem to 'recycle' their existing performances, but It is reborn with Korean unique shoutings and conversations, giving 'fun'. In particular, Cho Dong-jin's 'I can't hear' is another masterpiece that combines the charm of soulful two Koreans with the performance of the band Light of the East.

투 코리언스의 마지막 정규 앨범으로 기록될 이 음반은 투 코리언스가 노래를, 이장희가 작곡을, 동방의 빛이 편곡과 연주를, 나현구 사장이 프로듀싱을 맡은 오리엔트의 전문적 분업체계가 잘 드러난 작품이다. 음반 전체를 관통하는 한두 단어의 수식어를 찾아내기는 힘들지만, 그렇다고 음반이 이것저것을 아무렇게나 묶어 놓았다는 느낌이 들지는 않는다. 역시 오리엔트의 전문적인 분업체계가 막강한 위력을 발휘한 음반이라는 느낌을 지울 수가 없다.

1971년 [벽오동](신진레코드, SJ 2 7130)을 통해 데뷔한 투 코리언스는 김도향(CM송 작곡가와 명상 음악으로 더 잘 알려져 있다)과 손창철의 듀엣으로 이루어진 팀이다. 음악적인 견해차로 잠시 결별했다가, 1973년 재결합했지만 이후 두 장의 독집 음반을 내고 다시 해체한다. 정규 독집 앨범으로는 이 앨범이 마지막이다.

이 음반에서 가장 먼저 눈에 띄는 곡들은 이장희의 곡들이다. 영화 [별들의 고향]의 주제곡 "나 그대에게 모두 드리리"부터, "한 잔의 추억", "그건 너", "불꺼진 창"까지 실려 이장희의 히트곡 모음집 같은 느낌마저 들 정도다. 이장희 이외에 조동진, 김민기, 김기웅의 곡이 한 곡씩 실려있다. 특이한 것은 조동진이 만든 "들리지 않네"다. 12/8박자의 소울 스타일의 곡으로, 조동진하면 떠오르는 "행복한 사람"이나 "나뭇잎 사이로"와 같은 곡과는 전혀 다른 '열창'을 필요로 하는 곡이다. 그밖에 킹스턴 트리오(Kingston Trio)의 "This Land Is Your Land"를 양병집이 개사한 "이 땅은 나의 땅", 사이먼 버터플라이(Simon Butterfly)의 "Rain Rain Rain" 등과 한국의 민요를 개사해 부른 "뱃노래" 등이 실려있다.

이장희의 곡들을 부른 트랙들의 연주는 이장희가 부른 원곡들과 상당히 흡사하다. 기타와 보컬이 서로 주고받는 듯한 곡의 진행을 보이는 "나 그대에게 모두 드리리", 로즈(Rhodes) 신서사이저의 퐁퐁대는 소리가 인상적인 "한잔의 추억", 트로트 리듬의 "불꺼진 창" 등은 거의 이장희가 부른 곡들과 분위기가 흡사하다. 그러나, 단순히 원곡을 그대로 재현했다고 볼 수는 없는데, 그것은 다름 아닌 김도향과 손창철의 목소리 때문인 듯하다. 김도향과 손창철의 보컬은 어느 트랙에서나 이장희의 노래("불꺼진 창"의 경우 조영남)와는 다른 느낌을 만들어 내고 있는데, 투 코리언스의 음성은 그보다 더 즉흥적이고 자유롭다는 느낌이 든다. 투 코리언스에 비한다면 투박한 이장희의 목소리는 오히려 절제되고 조련된 목소리로 들릴 정도다. "그건 너"의 경우, 반주는 이장희의 노래와 비슷하게 들리지만 김도향과 손창철의 코믹한 내레이션으로 재탄생된다. 1절의 손창철의 노래 사이사이로 김도향이 코믹한 멘트를 '날리는' 대목이나, 2절 부분을 두 사람의 이야기체로 대체한 부분도 이색적이다. "한잔의 추억"에서는 루이 암스트롱처럼 찌그러진 왜곡된 목소리를 보여줌으로써 목소리의 톤을 다채롭게 변화시킨다. 정형화되지 않고 즉흥적인 이들의 보컬로 말미암아 기존의 노래는 새로운 흥취를 머금게 되는 것은 아닐까.

음반을 듣는 재미는 민요를 개사해 부른 "뱃노래"에서도 계속된다. "어이영차 어이영차"하는 코러스가 흥미로운데, 당시 녹음실에 있었던 동방의 빛 멤버들과 나현구 사장까지 가세해 함께 "어이영차"를 함께 외쳐댔다는 일화도 노래를 듣는 재미를 부가시킨다.

그렇지만 무엇보다 김도향, 손창철의 보컬과 동방의 빛의 연주가 만나 이루어진 독특한 사운드의 알짜배기는 "들리지 않네"일 듯싶다. 트레몰로로 연주되는 블루지한 피아노 전주를 시작으로, 밑바닥의 소리까지 남김없이 뱉어내며 외쳐대는 음성이 매혹적이다. 물론 피아노에서 무그 사운드로, 무그 사운드에서 피아노로 넘나드는 건반악기의 연주나, 클린 톤의 기타를 버리고 퍼즈와 와와로 덧입혀진 기타의 음색은 4분이 넘는 시간동안 팽팽한 긴장감을 늦출 수 없도록 만들고 있다.

'두 한국인'들의 번득이는 가창이 음반의 한 축이라면, 그것의 버팀목이 되는 든든한 기반은 강근식을 위시한 오리엔트의 전문 세션인 동방의 빛의 발광(發光)에 있다. "나 그대에게 모두 드리리"를 비롯한 대부분의 트랙에서 들리는 클린 톤의 영롱한 기타 소리, "한잔의 추억"의 인상적인 인트로를 장식하는 로즈 신서사이저의 소리, "그건 너"에서 버스와 코러스를 연결하는 미니 무그의 음향, "Rain Rain Rain"의 테입 에코를 통해 반향되는 기타 사운드, "뱃노래"의 스프링 에코를 거친 울림과 같은 다양한 사운드 실험은 '밴드'로서 동방의 빛의 진면목을 파악할 수 있게 만드는 대목이다. 때문에 이 음반은 투 코리언스의 거칠면서도 맛깔스러운 창법과, 세련된 동방의 빛의 연주와 조우하여 새로운 화학작용을 발산한 음반임에 틀림없다. 2002. 12. 08

"The album, which was going to be recorded as the final album of Two Koreans, shows the songs of Two Koreans, Lee Jang-hee, compositions of Light of the Orient, and their professional division of production produced by their leader Na Hyun-gu. It's hard to find a balanced one or two words when going through the entire record, because the album doesn't make you feel like the record is tied well together. Still, I can't erase the feeling that Orient's professional division gives the record a great power.

Debuted in 1971 with Wall Five (Shinjin Record, SJ 2 7130), Two Koreans is a duet composed of Kim Do Hyang (better known as CM songwriter and meditation music) and Son Chang Chul. After a brief break with the musical point of view, they reunited in 1973, then later released two solo albums and disassembled the band. This album is the last single album.

The first songs that stand out in this album are Lee Jang-hee's songs. From the theme song "I'll give you all" to the movie "Hometown of Stars", "A Cup of Memories", "That's You", and "The Spear of Fire", it feels like it's a Lee's collection of hit songs. In addition to Lee Jang-hee, Jo Dong-jin, Kim Min-ki, and Kim Ki-woong are also included. The unusual addition is "I can't hear" made by Cho. This is a 12/8 beat soul-style song that would requires a "single" that is completely different from songs such as "happy people" and "through the leaves." In addition, King's Trio's "This Land Is Your Land" was opened before the two tracks, "This land is my land," Simon Butterfly's "Rain Rain Rain," and Korean folk songs. "Singing Song".

The performance of the tracks sung by Jang-hee's songs is quite similar to the original songs sung by Lee. "I'll give it to you all" where the guitar and vocals seem to exchange with each other, "The cup of memories" with the Rhodes synthesizer's pom-pompom sound, and the trot rhythm based "Let's out the window." The atmosphere in them is similar to the songs. However, it cannot be said that the original song was simply reproduced to a plain song interpretation as it contains the voices of Kim Do Hyang and Son Chang Chul. Kim Do-hyang and Son Chang-cheol whose vocals produce all different feelings compared to Lee Jang-hee's song ("Young Chang-jo" in the case of "lighted window") where the voice of Two Koreans feels more improvised and free. Compared to two-cores, the clunky Lee Jang-hee's voice sounds rather understated and disciplined. In the case of the accompaniment of "That's you," this sounds similar to Lee Jang-hee's song, but it is reborn with the comic narration of Kim Do-hyang and Son Chang-cheol. Among the songs of Son Chang-cheol in verse 1, Kim Do-hyang `` blows '' comic lines, and in the verse 2 it is replaced by two narratives. "Memories of a Cup" colourfully changes the tone of voice by showing a distorted voice distorted like Louis Armstrong. Perhaps the existing song will have a new interest because of the vocals of those who are not formalized and improvised.

The fun of listening to this music continues in the song "Singing Song". The chorus of "Eoi Young Cha Eoi Young Cha" is interesting, and anecdotes that the members of the (Light of the) East in the recording room and Na Hyun-gu, along with the shouts of "Eoi Young Cha" together, add to the fun of listening to the song.

But most of all, the unique sound of the combination of Kim Do Hyang, Son Chang Chul's vocals and the Light of the East's sound seems to be overlapping. Beginning with a blue piano piano played in tremolo, the voices that spit out and shout out from the sound of the bottom are fascinating. Of course, the performances of keyboard instruments from the piano to the Moog sound, changing from the Moog sound to the piano, or the sound of guitars that have been thrown away with clean tone guitars and overlaid with fuzz and wahwah will not be able to slow down the tension for more than four minutes.

If the prominent song of the 'two Koreans' is the axis of the record, its strong foundation is the Light of the East, as a professional session in cooperation with Kang Geun Sik. "I'll give it all to you," including the sound of a clever tone on most tracks, the sound of a Rhode synthesizer that impresses in the intro of "a cup of memory," and a mini Moog that connects the chorus in "that you." Various sound experiments, such as Moog's sound, or the guitar sound echoing through the tape echo of "Rain Rain Rain", and the echo in "singing song", are examples of the succesful 'bands' interpretations that help us understand the true Light of the East 's essence. For this reason, this record must be a record that emits a new chemical reaction by encountering Two-Koreans' coarse and delicious creation for the refined performance of the light of the east."
