V.A.: 유성기로 듣던 연극모음 (1930년대) / The collection of plays I heard during the Meteor period (1930s) 1997.03 I never bothered to review this 3CD which collected theatre works that is dominating with words over music, something that annoyed me at first just a bit too much because I don't understand a word of Korean. After having listened to the Movie Soundtrack of Mokpo I gave it another close listen. I knew there were fragments that still made it worth to make them like a musical r

Three songs were to found on this compilation of Chun Ok or Jean-Ok. We hear a Japanese sounding early trot song with high soprano, accompanied by piano chords, some violin and clarinet/trombone and some resonating metal chords (some sort of gong ?) effect instrument. The second track shows more emotionality in singing, and an accompaniment by acoustic guitar and violin. It is a rather Japanese sounding early trot, with some orchestral responses with banjo. The last early tro

이난영 - Lee Nan-Young (Lee, Ran Young) / Yi Nan Young ; (-Oka Ranko-)
The first few tracks show the best of possibilities, in that Lee Nan-Young has the sort of qualities in her voice and singing that shows a certain emotion in her voice, with a distinctive sad sensitive quality. The first track is just acoustic picking, violin and voice only, which shows these qualities best. Most tracks are in Trot style with a minor old time jazz influence. The voice goes very high. A few track are in dialogue male/female voice, with some harmony singing too

김상진 - Kim Sang-Jin
This is a totally different kind of mainstream singing which isn’t western at all (despite the arrangements), but it has almost entirely a Korean context to it. The arrangements are done with a full orchestra, some soprano sax, or other reed or brass instruments, relaxed drums, reed and brass, here and there some congas, one track with a theremin ! and another with an additional keyboard. It is especially the voice, which stand out as being 'highly unusual' to our western ear

패티김 - Patti Kim
You can find her music here: VIP-7239 LP reissue Viktor 패티김 - 앵콜 힛트송 / Encore Hit Song vol. 1 We hear a slightly smoked voice, early 60s pop music arranged with a certain modernity and freedom, but still like an enhanced from of inspirations with its origins rooted in ballroom ballads from the 40s. The modernity includes psych organ and smooth pop vibes, with a certain subtle smoothness. I am sure it Patti Kim contributed to the idea of a new modern world pop sound. In gener

유성기로 듣던 불멸의 명가수: 얼굴 없는 명가수 (2) 11 무정한 밤차 / Heartless night train (1936) (OKEH 1901) Unique on this track is a bossanova rhythm. You can also hear a train whistle. It is a goodbye song, which sounds gentle and sweet. It is like a celebration because of the sounds of the orchestra (violin, clarinet, strings etc. and a touch of jazz here and there). As usual its sadness is not directly expressed but can be felt through the lyrics. A woman undergoes the situation. It is the only

It is a beautiful, slow rather classical music styled lullaby-like song with walzing chamber music strings. It features at a small part with overdubs of voices. Solos by slide guitar and a slow country-like stomping rhythm are heard in it too. This is a true nice exa
