DJ TAQ-1 - 한국훵키성탄절 - Korean Funky Christmas Different as the previous album is that this not just a mix of grooves but it keeps it ties better together in theme, as well as with a bit more respect to the original songs, keeping it together as a Christmas song collection compilation, still being mixed together as one listening session (with a bit shortened tracks too). It makes this a rather interesting as well as a somewhat groovy at times bizar listen. Once again, except for

V.A. - DOMIDO label (omnibus)
I very much enjoyed and spent a lot of time with this luxury edition of 5 CD’s with mini-book (notes in Korean only), showing an overview of some of the artists on the Korean Domido Label (see links in the tracklist below). I have also spent a lot of time looking for the original covers over the artists involved, but also included some later albums of these artists (and some YouTube tracks) so that you get an idea who exactly was involved and how they look. I still realised t

30s V.A.: 유성기로 듣던 여명의 한국동요 / Korean Nursery Rhymes of Dawn (1924 ~ 1945)
유성기로 듣던 여명의 한국동요 / Korean Song of Dawn (reissue: 1993.10) This is a series of children songs being recorded during Japan’s occupation period. I am not sure if it was part of an original series. The songs fit very well together. More or less I recognise two possible categories. One sort of approach is led by voice with piano only. This voice is almost classical in nature, but then with a rather grotesque voice colour to it. After the development of the song there are responses

CD1, the 50s, an early achieved freedom in expression... In the 50s musically there was no restriction, and the music very much was flourishing and developing, using the elements developed under Japanese education, restriction and adaptation, using a certain westernisation, a context of ballroom music, adapting elements of a creative new folklore song style, with at it’s weirdest an operette-like folklore vibrato in the voice, that can have a schlager-like association. Books on Korean Pop
Mark Russell started to live in South Korea since 1996. He had witnessed the continuous economic growth of Korea (called the Korean Wave). I guess his main interested is film, while his focus in the book also explains thoroughly the economic process itself. What interests me for my website is of course mainly the section about music, which still is the least worked out part of the book. Of course we still have in a very short the story of “the grandfather of rock”, -Shin Joon
