V.A. - 유성기로 듣던 불멸의 명가수 (23CD Box Set) CD8 True favourites; 8. 올팡갈팡 / olpang-galpang, 12. 청춘(靑春) 삘딩 / Youth springing ("good morning"-song) To my amazement I found out that in Korea from the 30s/40s, it wasn’t only the preceding style of Trot that had been recorded. The recordings of Kim Hae-Song show a lot more cabaret, influences in old time jazz, and influences from American broadway film music, which shows another interesting and expressive aspect of music from those days.

Lee Nan-Young (Lee, Ran Young) / Yi Nan Young ; (-Oka Ranko-)
The first few tracks show the best of possibilities, in that Lee Nan-Young has the sort of qualities in her voice and singing that shows a certain emotion in her voice, with a distinctive sad sensitive quality. The first track is just acoustic picking, violin and voice only, which shows these qualities best. Most tracks are in Trot style with a minor old time jazz influence. The voice goes very high. A few track are in dialogue male/female voice, with some harmony singing too

30s V.A.: 유성기로 듣던 여명의 한국동요 / Korean Nursery Rhymes of Dawn (1924 ~ 1945)
유성기로 듣던 여명의 한국동요 / Korean Song of Dawn (reissue: 1993.10) This is a series of children songs being recorded during Japan’s occupation period. I am not sure if it was part of an original series. The songs fit very well together. More or less I recognise two possible categories. One sort of approach is led by voice with piano only. This voice is almost classical in nature, but then with a rather grotesque voice colour to it. After the development of the song there are responses

복혜숙 / Bok, Hae-Ok
유성기로 듣던 불멸의 명가수 : 막간 가수들 "Interlude singers" (vol 21) 복혜숙 / Bok, Hae-Ok: 1 종로행진곡(鐘路行進曲) (Jogno March) 2 그대 그립다 / You Miss You (COLUMBIA 40071) (1930) 11 애(愛)의 광(光) Light of love 12 목장(牧場)의 노래 / Song of the ranch” (COLUMBIA) (1930) The first record reveals already a rather bad intonation of singing on these two songs, not the best example of Japanese-like songs with accompaniment on this first Columbia single, and it only gets slightly better on the second. I am afraid I need

Kim Sungbae
Beatball Kim Sungbae- Ritual 2019 LP only no review (I don't have this album yet) "Kim Sung-bae is a jazz bassist and the leader of ILIL SOUND, a collective of jazz experimentalists. In addition to his activities with the free jazz ensemble, the Avant Trio, and as a member of saxophonist Kim Oki’s group, he has also pursued his solo work. <Ritual>, recorded in 2016, is Kim Sung-bae’s second solo effort. After encountering a gut ritual performed by the manshin Kim Geum-hwa, he

This is professional and modern sounding orchestral and rather filmic partially groovy music, which partly makes it hard to believe this recording is already over 40 years old, it surely does not sound dated at all, rather like a reinterpretation of music of these days mixed with jazz arrangements
