4월과 5월 - April & May
Charming, song-related folk-rock with 2 slightly mellow male harmony singers, some tracks also orchestrated (strings and brass), accompanied by an electric rock band (with some nice organ giving a psych touch here and there). 60s styled with some lalala backings. Sung in Korean. It took me two different listens, but it is a nice one. I assume there will be some western pop covers involved but I don’t recognise any of them. Track 5 featured some Korean folk instrument and I think has a Korean folk origin but still sounds interpreted like a western pop song mixed with Korean folk origin with the crossover lyrics repeating a phrase with "ding dong dee".

Nice (often) dual harmony vocal pop-rock songs greatly arranged in studio with folk-rock arrangements, sparse flute arrangements and some orchestration here and there or some fine fuzz/rock elements, extra percussion with relaxed congas. A really nice 60s, at times psych flavoured, pop/rock album, which sounds like an improvement to the previous one. 24 bit remastered edition.
Described by VVMO as the "Korean Everly Brothers on acid".

1970년대는 팝송 번안 곡 위주로 활동을 벌였던 포크듀오 전성 시대였다. 당시 송창식, 윤형주의 트윈폴리오를 시작으로 투에이스, 뚜아에무아, 라나에로스포, 에보니스, 쉐그린, 원플러스원, 투코리언스, 어니언스, 현경과 영애, 산이슬, 둘다섯, 그린빈스등 수많은 듀엣들이 탄생했다. 그 중 남성 포크듀오 ‘4월과 5월’은 창작곡으로 포크 열풍을 주도했던 중요 그룹이었다. 리더는 백순진. 70년대 젊은 영혼들의 사랑을 듬뿍 받았던 이들은 '화', '바다의 여인', '등불', '옛사랑', '겨울바람', '님의 노래', '사랑의 의지'등 수많은 노래를 히트시켰고, 맷돌 공연 등을 통해 펼친 실험적인 창작 포크송 실험은 의미심장했다. 1972년 데뷔음반을 발표할 즈음에 오리지널 멤버 이수만이 건강 문제로 팀을 탈퇴했다. 이에 리더 백순진은 발 빠르게 외국어대 대학생 김태풍과 2기 라인업을 가동했다. 1973년 발매한 두 번째 음반이자 첫 독집 「Best 4월과5월」을 히트시키면서 인기를 얻은 이들은 이번에 재발매된 세 번째 음반이자 두 번째 독집인 「4월과5월 Vol.2 - 사랑의 의지」를 발표했다. 엠보싱으로 제작된 앨범 커버를 장식한 가을 분위기 짙은 가로수 길에서 자전거를 타는 백순진, 김태풍의 사진은 경기도 이천에서 여주로 가는 국도에서 촬영되었다.
포크송에서 벗어나려는 첫 음악적 시도
이 앨범에는 단순한 포크송에서 벗어나 다양한 사운드를 지향했던 4월과 5월의 리더 백순진의 본격적인 음악적 도전이 담겨있다. 앨범에 수록된 총 10곡은 모두 백순진의 창작곡이다. 타이틀곡 '사랑의 의지'가 크게 히트했는데, 이 노래는 당대의 인기 가수 이수미가 이들보다 앞선 1972년에 이미 발표해 그녀의 노래로 더 많이 알려져 있다. 그 외의 수록곡들은 대중적으로 각광받지는 못했지만 단순한 통기타 연주가 대부분이었던 1970년대 포크송의 외연을 포크 록의 사운드로 한껏 넓혔다는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다.
잘 알려지지 않은 희귀 노래들이 수록
이 앨범에는 70년대 인기 남성듀오 4월과 5월의 노래 중에서 잘 알려지지 않은 아름답고 서정적인 노래들이 상당수 수록되어 있다는 점에서 가치가 높다. 그 중 '어린시절', '필요한 것', '꽃 한송이', '고궁 연못', '님이란 무엇일까', '우리들의 사랑', '젊음', '사랑은 주는 것' 등은 이 앨범에만 수록되어 있는 희귀 버전이다. 1면과 2면의 노래들은 분위기와 질감에서 다소 차이가 있다. 1면은 잔잔한 분위기의 포크송들이 포진되었다면 2면은 비트와 리듬감이 상당한 포크 록 버전들이 주도한다.
앨범의 문은 친숙한 '사랑의 의지'가 열어 제친다. 이어 해맑고 순수했던 동심의 기억을 되살려 주는 '어린시절'과 기존의 4월과 5월의 화음구성의 전형과는 다른 시도를 구사한 '필요한 것'은 모두 수려한 멜로디를 들려준다. '꽃 한송이'는 메인보컬 김태풍의 애절한 보컬이 매력을 발산하는 중독성 강한 이 앨범의 숨겨진 필청 트랙이다. '고궁 연못'도 화음이 매력이 귀에 감겨온다. 2면은 밴드 세션으로 펼쳐지는 비트와 리듬이 중심을 이루는 포크 록 사운드 노래들이 중심을 이룬다. 당시 포크록 밴드 ‘들개들’을 결성했던 백순진은 이후 본격적으로 포크 록 탐구에 들어가게 된다.
커버 사진이 같은 다양한 버전의 음반
이 앨범의 커버 사진을 그대로 사용한 다양한 앨범들이 존재한다. 「4월과5월 Vol.2 - 사랑의 의지」로 표기된 정규 앨범은 상당히 희귀하고 연이어 재발매되며 빅히트했던 베스트 앨범들의 개체 수는 넘쳐난다. 그래서 이 앨범은 정규앨범이 아닌 베스트 앨범으로 오해를 받기도 했다. 1976년 3월에 발매한 음반은 엠보싱 재킷이었고, 6월에 재발매한 음반은 일반적인 평면 재킷이었다. 초반과 재반에서 겹치는 노래는 '사랑의 의지', '우리들 세상' 단 2곡뿐이다. 베스트 음반으로 제작한 재반에는 1972년의 데뷔음반과 1973년의 첫 독집에서 히트한 '바다의 여인', '옛사랑', '님의 노래', '욕심없는 마음' 등이 총망라되었다. 같은 재킷 디자인을 사용했지만 초반과 재반의 뒷면 디자인은 다르다. 초반은 통기타를 들고 건초더미 가득한 수레를 타고 가는 멤버들의 사진으로 장식했지만, 재반은 사진이 없는 평범한 디자인이다. 재반 수록곡은 총 12곡(군가 포함)으로 초반보다 2곡이 늘었다. 음반 라벨도 초반은 오렌지 라벨이지만 재반은 짙은 회색으로 변경했다. 1983년 서울음반에서는 이 앨범과 동일한 사진에 하늘색과 녹색 테두리로 디자인해 남성 듀오 가람과 뫼와의 스플릿으로 제작한 4번째 음반까지 재발매했다. 같은 사진으로 장식한 4가지 버전의 앨범들은 수록곡이 서로 조금씩 다르다는 점이 특이하다. 그 중 가장 구하기 힘든 앨범은 1973년 최초로 발표한 초반인 「4월과 5월 Vol.2 - 사랑의 의지」이다. 2008년 리버맨에서 복각 CD로 재 발매되었던 이 음반은 오리지널 LP버전으로는 45년 만에 복원된 셈이다.

The male folk duo “April and May” was an important group that led the folk craze with creative songs. Their leader is Soon-Jin Baek.
In the 70's, they were loved by young souls, and they hit a lot of songs such as 'Tue (Hwa)', 'Woman of the Sea', 'Lantern', 'Old Love', 'Winter Wind', 'Song of God', and 'Will of Love'. The experimental creative folk song experiment, which was performed through a millstone performance, was significant. By the time he announced his debut album in 1972, the original member Lee Soo-man left the team due to health problems. Soon, Baek Sun-jin quickly started the second lineup with Kim Tae-pung, a university student at Foreign Language University. The second album and the first album "Best April and May", released in 1973, gained popularity. The third album and the second collection, "April and May Vol.2-Will of Love'' was announced. The photographs of Baek Sun-jin and Kim Tae-pung riding bicycles on the autumnal roadside trees decorated with embossed album covers were taken on the national road from Icheon to Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do.
It was their first musical attempt to escape the folk-based song: this album contains the authentic musical challenges of April and May leader Baek Sun-jin who aimed for various sounds beyond simple folk songs. All 10 songs in the album are original compositions by Baek Sunjin. The title song, "The Will of Love" was a big hit, and this song is more known for her songs since it was released in 1972 by popular singer Lee Soo-mi. Other songs were not popular, but they are significant because they expanded the folk songs of the 1970s folk songs, which were mostly performed with simple guitars.
It contains rare songs that are not well known. The album is valuable in that it contains a large number of beautiful and lyrical songs that are not well known among the popular male duo of April and May. Among them, 'childhood', 'necessary', 'single flower', 'palace pond', 'what is you', 'our love', 'young', 'giving love' provide a rare version. The songs on side 1 and 2 differ somewhat in mood and texture. The first side is dominated by calm folk songs, while the second side is dominated by folk-rock versions with more significant beats and rhythms.

This is the third April & May album, a beautiful folk/rock close-harmony driven song duo, with nice band arrangements on organ, keyboards and electric guitars (including subtle wah-wah effects), bass and drums. The band plays beautifully, not just to suit the songs but also to create beautiful an instrumental part with it. This is already much more the real thing "progressive/psych" collectors are looking for. The vocals and songs are at times a bit more mellow, elsewhere more into and with the mood of the band. Every part is convincing.
"The band which played for the albums of April & May (DSO-0041) and Two Koreans (DSO-0033) is Dongbang-Ui Bit, which can be translated into "The Light of the Orient." It is a kind of "house band" in the label Orient production which was specialized in Korean "folk rock" and "folk pop" records. 4월과 5월을 어떻게 소개해야 좋을까. 일단 확인해 둘 것은 지금 소개하는 음반의 주인공이 지금도 활동하고 있고 “장미”라는 히트곡을 부른 4월과 5월과는 멤버가 다르다는 점이다. 당시의 4월과 5월은 은 ‘백순진 + 1’이라는 포크 록 듀오였다. ‘1’의 자리는 대체로 김태풍이 담당했지만 이수만(!)과 김정호(!) 등도 한때 이 자리를 거쳐갔다. 그런데 4월과 5월은 매우 미스터리가 많은 그룹이다. 리더인 백순진은 당시로서는 이례적으로 데뷔 앨범을 자신의 ‘작품집’으로 장식하고 그것도 당대의 메이저인 오아시스에서 발매했다. 그뿐인가. “사랑의 의지” 등 당대의 정상의 여가수 이수미가 부른 몇몇 곡들을 작곡하고 그녀의 음반을 실질적으로 프로듀스하기도 했다. 다른 한편 이들은 1971년의 청평 페스티벌을 계기로 혜성같이 등장했고, 이백천이 운영하던 르실랑스(Le Silence)를 근거지로 활동했으며, 전설적 포크 공연인 [맷돌]에 김민기, 송창식, 양희은과 함께 참여하는 등 ‘포크 언더그라운드’에도 일정하게 참여했던 존재다.

그런데 오리엔트 사운드(혹은 역촌동 사운드)의 총지휘자 나현구는 ‘이지 리스닝을 지향한다’고 누누이 말했다고 한다. 이렇게 인공적으로 처치된 음들이 어떻게 ‘이지’하게 들릴 수 있을까. 실제로 들어보면 음들이 그리 불편하거나 부자연스럽게 들리지는 않는다. 그건 뭘로 설명할 수 있을까. 일차적으로는 강근식의 기타와 조원익의 베이스가 만들어내는 숨겨진 그루브를 들 수 있다. 재즈에 영향받은 두 기타리스트(베이스도 ‘기타’의 하나다)의 연주는 기계적으로 리듬을 연주하거나 리듬감 없이 솔로를 남발하는 대신 선율감이 있는 라인을 만들어내고 라인 사이에 분절을 지어서 선율감이 강한 작곡에 리듬감을 부여해 준다.
그렇지만 이런 리듬감도 “등불”, “옛사랑”, “구름들의 보금자리” 등의 수려한 멜로디와 결합하지 않았다면 이만큼 빛을 보지는 못했을 것이다. 팝송의 형식을 그리 거스르지 않고서도 세련된 선율을 뽑아내고 이를 백킹 보컬과 조화시키는 백순진의 능력은 선천적인 이유 외의 다른 이유를 들기 힘들다. 이 멜로디들은 마치 영국이나 미국의 어떤 시대에 존재했던 팝의 고전 같다는 느낌까지 들 정도다. 작곡 스타일도 다채로워서 “옛 사랑”과 “내게로 와요”는 긴장되고 절박한 감정이 넘치고, “바람길”이나 “슬픈 운명”은 느린 멜랑콜리를 담고 있고, “바람길”과 “우리들의 이름”은 적당히 허무하다. 뮤트론이 변조하는 뿅뿅거리는 음들 사이로 백순진과 김태풍이 교대로 메인 보컬을 맡은 “어둠 속에서”까지 버릴 곡이 하나도 없다. 일일이 다 언급할 수 없어도…
믿기 어려운 것은, 그리고 믿고 싶지 않은 것은 “내일 다시 만나요”가 ‘일본곡 완전 표절’이라는 이유로 금지곡이 되었다는 점이다. 현재로서는 사실 여부를 확인하기 힘들다. 귀에 걸면 귀걸이 코에 걸면 코걸이 식의 예륜의 자의적 판단인지 아닌지… 하지만 이런 사소한 오점에도 불구하고 이 음반이 ‘포크’를 예술의 경지로까지 끌어올린 음반인 것만은 틀림없다. 이때 예술이란 ‘라이브의 예술’이 아니라 ‘레코딩의 예술’을 말한다. 불행히도 이 음반 역시 ‘금지곡이 한 곡만 있어도 음반을 판매할 수 없다’는 당시의 정책(이런 것도 ‘정책’일까?)으로 인해 이들의 백조의 노래가 되고 말았지만… 20021222 | 신현준 homey@orgio.net

Side A is possibly influenced by H5's “Merry Christmas psychedelic Sound” because here they also present this side like a christmas album with a rock band. Combined with the sweet harmony vocals of April & May this is a bizarre but interesting combination. There are surprising rock'n roll riffs in each track. Even “White Christmas” with rock band and harpsichord has a few breaks with some interesting rock'n roll / drifting electric guitar riffs. “Holy Night” becomes a rocker with even a few La Bamba riffs included. Sometimes it just seems that the Christmas songs were just an excuse to promote their own songs (included on side A too) or for their musical vision, in a public teasing context.
The second side has firstly three acoustic April & May songs accompanied by acoustic guitars only, with harmony vocals, and most often strummed harmonies, being nice in its own right. The fourth track is with a band again, a more up tempo, light and swinging song, a soft rocker still with a Christmas theme I assume because I recognise the word “Christmas” somewhere. The song after that is accompanied by acoustic guitars and trumpet, with happy singing and crowd-noise-making vocals. The last track, also with band, has some hammond organ contribution too. Also this track is in a celebarative way a happy song. All-in-all an album rewarding to discover.

At a later listen I still think the duo added a few interesting elements to certain Christmas songs. This is a later album by the duo, mostly a pop/rock album, more clearly a studio arranged album, although very nicely made and in a comparable vein, as songs with harmony vocals, you can hear some of it is prepared in the studio with a band for a wide mainstream public, like preparations in addition to the songs. Most clear for instance for just a few keyboard string imitations and a few lush orchestrations. It is very enjoyable warm pop music. Very nice is that the last track is arranged with acoustic guitars only.

This is a live performance of the duo in its most folky and basic version. This gives these songs and atmosphere something pure and innocent in a rather charming way. "Ding Dong Dang" goes beyond that with some extra creative eastern sounding picking harmonic arrangements on top of two acoustic guitars, making its interpretation and version rather unique.

The voice is recorded with much reverberation giving it a pop/rock feel, making the song sound more like a radio pop hit despite its acoustic foundation. Further on a bit of reverberating synth arrangements and piano was added too. It's an attractive catchy song. This comes from a compilation dedicated to the famous C'est Ci Bon folk-club.

April & May is a great band to check out. They started in the folk area of harmony folk duos but quickly turned into more progressive areas. Their folk-rock sound should certainly be attractive to western ears. Therefore this band is recommended to collect. Some credit music be give to the progressive sounding Light of The East session band that was involved in those recordings.

4월과 5월은 1971년 백순진과 이수만의 듀오로 결성되었다.
1970년대는 번안곡 위주의 포크 듀오가 인기였던 시대였으나 남성 포크 듀오 '4월과 5월'은 당시로서는 드문 창작 곡을 발표했던 팀이였다. 팀의 리더였던 백순진은 중앙대 작곡과 출신으로 젊은이들에게 인기있었던 '화', '바다의 여인', '사랑의 의지', '옛사랑', '님의 노래', '장미', '등대'등의 수 많은 히트 곡을 만들었다.
본 앨범은 4월과 5월의 데뷔 음반으로 당시 이종환이 기획했던 음반인 [오아시스 포크 페스티발]시리즈의 첫번째 음반이다. 이수만이 앨범 녹음 후 개인사정으로 탈퇴하자 김태풍을 멤버로 영입하여 발표하는 바람에 음반의 표기와는 달리 "욕심없는 마음", "절망하지 마라"에서의 메인 싱어로 그리고, "푸른 하늘"과 "화"에서 코러스 라인을 이루고 있는 목소리는 이수만으로, 음반에 표기된 대로 "작은 섬" 역시 이수만이 불렀다.

April and May Works-Oasis Folk Festival vol.1
April and May were formed in the duo of Soonjin Baek and Sooman Lee in 1971.
