목소리 속의 또 다른 목소리.‘열두 냥짜리 인생’,‘즐거운 잔칫날’,‘엄마야 누나야’,‘정든 그 노래’ 등으로 밝고 깊은 화음을 들려주던 남성4중창단 블루벨즈(Blue Bells). 이들이 곧 우리나라 최초(最初)이자 최장(最長)의 쿼텟(Quartet)이다. 편한 호흡처럼 느껴지면서도 그 호흡을 태우는 듯한 ‘깊은 울림’을 듣고 있노라면 1960년대 궁핍했던 시절, 대중가요가 지닌 강한 에너지를 느낄 수 있다. 당시 우리 가요계의 큰 특징 중 하나로 오디오의 급성장을 들 수 있을 것이다.SP(축음기) 음반 시대에서 본격적인 LP 레코드 시대로 전환하는 새로운 장도 이 즈음에 열린다. 즉 하이파이 음색에서 스테레오 입체 음향의 개발과 함께 방송에서 띄우는 전파 역시 AM에서 FM이라는 보다 좋은 음질로 전환하듯 가요 역시 단시율(單施律)적인 소리에서 화성으로 접근해가기 시작했다. 블루벨즈의 등장은 이러한 소리의 변화를 담고 있는 1960년대의 상징이다. 우리나라 가요계 최초로 쿼텟, 즉 남성4중창단 블루벨즈가 첫 선을 보인 것은 영화 ‘심야의 블루스’를 통해서였다. 노필 감독이 메가폰을 잡고 작곡가 손석우씨가 음악을 맡은 이 영화 ‘심야의 블루스’에서 남성 4중창단 ‘블루벨즈’가 극중 인물로 설정돼 등장한다.1960년도의 일이다. 이 스크린을 통해 설정된 ‘블루벨즈’ 멤버는 손시향, 박일호, 현양 그리고 김성배씨. 말하자면 솔로가수로 이미 대중들에게 친숙했던 이들이 전혀 낯선 쿼텟으로 분장해 등장한 것이다. 가수 손시향씨는 ‘검은 장갑’ ‘이별의 종착역’ 등으로 최고 인기를 누리던 미남·미성의 가수였고 박일호(본명 박응호)씨는 1958년 ‘메아리 사랑’으로 데뷔, 역시 ‘비 내리는 일요일’ 등을 발표하며 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있었다. 아울러 서울대 음대 출신 현양(본명 정운화)씨 역시 당시 솔로로 극장무대 등에 나서며 작곡가 손석우씨를 본격적으로 사사하고 있는 중이었고 드러머 출신 김성배씨 또한 ‘서울의 에드란제’ 라는 곡을 발표하며 본격적으로 가수 활동을 시작한 인물. 비가 쏟아지는 가운데 강행된 야간촬영에서 가수 현인의 노래‘꿈속의 사랑’을 함께 부르는 것으로 마지막 촬영을 끝낸 바로 그날 아침, 손시향씨는 미국행 비행기에 오른다. ‘삼천리 방방곡곡에, 삼천만의 가슴에 현대인의 우수(憂愁)를 울려주는 종’이란 뜻으로 이름 지어진 블루벨즈. 이렇게 첫 선을 보인 이들 쿼텟이 실제로 결성되어 대중들 앞에 등장하는 건 이 영화 촬영 직후 KBS 라디오 연속극 ‘시계 없는 대합실’의 주제가를 부르면서.1960년 10월, 남성4중창단의 결성을 오랫동안 꿈꿔왔던 작곡가 손석우씨의 제의에 의해서였다. 이들 멤버는 각각 멜로디 박일호씨, 당시 KBS 전속가수 2기생이었던 서양훈(바리톤)씨, 그리고 현양(베이스)씨와 김천악(하이테너·본명 김영완)씨. 이 둘은 대구 계성고 동창으로 블루벨즈 팀에 합류하며 활동을 시작했다. 이들 멤버는 모두 1935년생 동갑내기들이다.
