Hahn Bok-Nam’s double CD compilation is a welcome release. It features some of the most refreshing new folk/trot arrangements of the time. We have a lot of happy songs with nice arrangement sometimes with strings and combo / band. Hahn Bok-Nam has a very vibrating voice but also has an ability to provoke feelings of happiness. Especially fresh are all the mambo and chachacha influenced songs, which are especially original. One of the tracks I remember from a compilation with some real laughing voice in it. A nice document done with respect to the artist.

Some favorites: 빈대떡 신사, 꿈에 본 내고향, 맘보 차차차/ Mambo Cha Cha Cha, , 전복타령/ Abalone, and 저무는 충무로.

PS. Domido, I was told (-by Keewong-) was one of the most important Korean labels from the 50s. It was run by Hahn Bok-Nam(1919-1991) who was a famous singer himself.

Of course, Hahn Bon-Nam had all the means to make his song work. He had a good taste, good voice and his own choice of musicians. "Bindae Tteok Shrine" (1943) has trot flavors but is pretty happy in its core and incorporated original laughter lyrics, a happy melody with tango-like features with no doubt is one of the classics that will defy time. "My Parents" (1957) is a nicely arranged and more sad trot track. The 1961 track is trot music led by accordions with vibrating voice. Also the last track is led by accordion and very vibrating voice with very warm bass tones.

Domido Best Collection 100 Vol.1

CD2, 13 꿈에 본 내고향 / 꿈에 본 내고향 / My hometown I've seen in my dreams

Strangely enough the first song was included in volume 1 and two, I assume these are still 2 different versions. Also "Low Murmers" I know exists in two versions, mono (1950) and stereo (1971). Both versions clearly are stereo versions with improved sound. Also the last track exists in a moon (1951) and stereo version (1971). The arrangements are well taken care off, making it worth checking the stereo version for it.

Previously I described the first track on the Domido Collection vol1 review as "I prefer to take out track 1 by Hahn Bok-Nam, a happy marching song with interesting arrangements, trumpets and guitar accents, keyboards in eastern style and a bit of laughing included in the singing."
