은희 - Eun-Hee / Eun He (<Lana.et.Rospo)
Charming, sweet and innocent girl folk refering to the early '60's naive and innocent pop period in the West (Marian Faithful,..) with lots of covers. Solo or duo vocals, accompanied by acoustic guitar mostly (and some oscilating banjo-like aproach of a second guitar). Many songs are in English ("Knock on your door", "Melodidamour",..), one in Spanish and two in Italian. For those who like this period and approach, this is a very good album.
I very much like the interpretation of "Scarborough Fair" and the romantic and beautiful "Beautiful Brown Eyes", sung both in English and Korean.

Tracks with * I consider essential listens or classics, or tracks to check out for sure. It are tracks that makes them also very suitable for western radioshow airplay. Tracks that are only underlined can be considered fine tracks you might better check out as well, but I am not sure how essential they are.
가요사에서 가장 아름다운 목소리를 가진 주인공으로 알려져 있으며, 혼성 포크 듀오 ‘라나에 로스포’의 창단멤버이기도 한 은희의 초반이 CD로 발매되었다. 70년대 초 여성 포크 싱어 중 가장 인기를 얻었던 은희의 데뷔앨범에는 그녀의 대표곡 ‘꽃반지 끼고’와 주옥같은 포크 스탠다드가 수록이 되어있어 당시의 분위기를 엿볼 수 있는 정감어린 앨범이다. 이 음반은 은희의 정통포크 버전인 데뷔 초반을 리마스터한 음반으로 그 가치를 더한다.
"Known as the hero with the most beautiful voice in song, and the founding member of the mixed folk duo Lana Rospo, the debut of Eunhee was now released on CD. Eun-hee became the most popular female folk singer in the early 70's. It includes her representative song "Flower Rings," a Gem Folk Standard. This is a 20 track best-off compilation of Eun He's early albums. Clearly a romantic vision is playing part here. Eun Hee's soft folk voice surely is convincing.
On the earliest tracks you can hear a convincing and honest melancholy. On later tracks, the general Korean tendency to put a few extra spoons of sugar into the romanticism with tendencies to make adult lullabies can be heard here too, but still within acceptable terms.
Most tracks are founded on and are also just voice and acoustic guitar, with only sparse other arrangements like organ, lush strings or some trumpet, oboe or clarinet, some electric bass and soft drums.
A few cover interpretations were added too, like a convincing acoustic guitar and voice only version of Everly Brothers “All I have to do is dream” (7), or “melody d'amour” (by The Ames Brothers, from which a later better version by the Lennon Sisters is a better comparison for the track choice; this was also sung by people like Paul Anka, and might have been most known, -I am not sure-, by the version of Ray Conniff Singers), here with two extra male vocalists, with organ and flute (14). Further we have a mellow acoustic version of Doris Day “Que Sera Sera” (16).
The last short song track features some yodelling arrangement in the track.
This compilation shows very well how an honest and innocent fragile melancholy might easily turn towards a more predictable and even kitschy sugar rich mainstream area, with safe cover versions, while in this case something real was still happening.

The “Golden” compilation possibly spans Eun He's whole career. The tracks fit well together, but most of it it from the mellow side and is meant for a bigger or mainstream 70s public with confirmations of standards, songs and arrangements within a safe area.
The most outstanding tracks, absolutely worth taking out, are tracks 1 & 2 from CD2 to start with. The first track is an extremely melancholic song with beautiful emotional singing accompanied by acoustic pickings only. The second, equally affective track is arranged with clarinet, pickings and a sad psych organ and some electric bass.
Also nice to hear is a version of Donovan's “Jennifer, Juniper”, here sung as “Jennipa, Junipa”, with some sparse violin strings and reeds arrangements, acoustic pickings, some organ and a charming funny to hear it combined with this, a quiet and constant bossa nova rhythm.
From the first CD within the most public teasing songs I especially loved the last track with Spanish guitar, cornet, first led by some dual male singers then being responded by Eun He. It has a happy children-song-like melody, and ends with some Korean entertaining yodelling.

대중음악은 시대를 반영한다. 그렇다면 대중음악의 어떤 요소가 시대를 반영하는 것일까? 리듬, 가사, 가수의 이미지 등이 있겠지만 시대의 변화에 따라 달라진 대중의 정서를 가장 잘 반영하는 요소는 가수의 목소리라고 하겠다.

좋은 예가 일제강점기 트로트의 여왕이었던 이난영과 1960년대에 새로운 트로트의 여왕이 된 이미자다. 이 둘은 목소리와 창법이 완전히 다르다. 이난영은 근대화 이전 농어촌의 정서가 담긴 여성의 자아를 반영했지만, 후배 가수인 이미자는 도시화 근대화된 여성의 자아를 반영한 새로운 목소리로 한국 트로트의 근대화를 이룩했다.
이런 관점에서 보면 1970년대에 들어서 통기타를 들고 나타난 가수들의 목소리는 선배 가수와 본질에서 달랐다. 트윈폴리오만 하더라도 남일해처럼 굵고 중후한 남자다운 목소리도 아니고 배호처럼 내면의 슬픔을 쥐어짜 내는 감정 과잉의 목소리도 아니었다. 바이브레이션은 거의 없고 가늘고 깨끗하며 감정을 절제하는, 어찌 보면 남자답지 못한 목소리였다.
통기타 여성 가수들의 목소리도 선배들과 본질에서 다르기는 마찬가지였다. 뚜아에무아의 여성 멤버 박인희는 서늘한 우수를 느끼게 하는 지적인 목소리로 젊은이들의 사랑을 받았다. 라나에로스포의 멤버이며 이후 솔로로 독립했던 최안순은 옥구슬처럼 맑으면서도 가늘게 떨리는 바이브레이션을 지닌 독특한 목소리의 소유자였다.
비슷한 시기에 등장한 양희은은 맑고 깨끗한 목소리에 당당하고 힘찬 목소리까지 추가하여 이전의 뭔가 사연 있는 듯한 여성 가수의 청승을 완전히 걷어내 버림으로써 적극적이고 독립적인 새로운 여성적 자아의 출현을 알렸다.
이런 여성가수들의 목소리의 변화를 보다 널리 알리면서 주류음악권에 진입해 성공을 거둔 사람이 은희였다. 제주도 출신인 은희는 1970년부터 서울의 살롱가에서 노래를 부르다가 한민을 만나 1970년 8월부터 라나에로스포로 연습을 시작했다. 12월 1집 녹음을 하고 곧바로 한민과 의견차로 탈퇴했는데 1971년 1월에 발매된 라나에로스포의 1집 음반은 '사랑해'가 대히트하면서 노래 목소리만 은희의 것이 되어버렸다.
하지만 그 덕분에 은희는 가능성을 인정받아 1971년 7월 자신의 독집을 발매해 '꽃반지 끼고'가 대히트하여 연말까지 7만 장 판매라는 홈런을 날리게 된다. 이런 성과로 1971년 MBC 10대가수상에서 신인상을 받게 된다. 이 음반을 취입할 당시 은희의 모친이 호랑이가 구름을 타고 하늘로 올라가는 꿈을 꾸었다니 길몽이 실현된 셈이었다.
은희의 목소리는 정말 독특했다. 맑고 깨끗하면서도 샹송처럼 지적인 느낌을 주는 매력을 지니고 있었다. 가사를 하나하나 꼭꼭 씹어서 발음할 때의 매력은 타의 추종을 불허했다. 은희의 바이브레이션은 아래위로 수직적으로 떨리는 것이 아니라 좌우로 수평적으로 떨리는 새로운 차원이었다.
이런 은희의 매력이 주목을 끌자 음반업계에서 은희에 대한 스카우트 경쟁이 벌어졌다. 은희는 그랜드 레코드가 1년반 동안 월 1만 원에 계약을 하고 발매한 1집이 대히트를 했음에도 자신에게 대접이 소홀한 것에 섭섭함을 느끼던 차에 오아시스 레코드에서 전속금 120만 원에 섭외가 들어왔고, 이에 질세라 지구레코드에서 전속금 140만 원을 제의하자 그랜드 레코드에 계약종료를 통보하고 지구와 이중계약을 맺어버렸다.
은희는 목소리만 독특한 것이 아니라 이미지도 남달랐다. 강렬한 이미지의 빨간색을 가장 좋아했던 은희는 빨간색 롱드레스를 즐겨 입었고 400여 벌의 무대의상에 20여 켤레의 구두를 소유했다. 외모에 대한 관심도 남달라서 1972년 눈과 코를 성형수술한 후 바비인형 같은 모습으로 변신해 귀엽고 복스럽던 과거의 모습과 작별했다.
1집에서 은희는 통기타 반주를 주로한 음반을 취입했지만 2집부터는 홍현걸, 박춘석, 남국인, 정민섭 등의 기성 작곡가들에게 곡을 받아 음반을 발매하면서 통기타가수의 이미지에서 일반 대중가수의 이미지로 변신했다.
은희는 1975년 미국으로 건너가 1976년 재미교포와 결혼해 패션 공부를 하고 1985년 돌아와 제주도에서 미용실을 하다가 1988년 강남에서 의상실을 했으며 1991년부터는 제주의 전통 옷감인 갈옷을 개발하여 판매하는 일을 하고 있다.
한국의 통기타음악은 1960년대 중반 YMCA의 '싱얼롱 Y'와 음악감상실 '세시봉'에서 출발해서 1970년이 되기 전까지는 주류 음악권에 진입하지 못하고 수면 아래서 새롭게 움트는 젊은 층의 음악에 머물고 있었다. 하지만 1970년부터 뚜아에무아, 라나에로스포, 은희 등이 주류 음악권에서 히트곡을 내고 성공함으로써 기성세대의 음악인 트로트와 스탠다드팝과 어깨를 겨누는 젊은 층의 음악으로 통기타음악의 위상을 격상시켰다. 은희의 새로운 목소리와 대중적인 이미지는 이런 상황에 크게 기여했다.
지난해 10월 본인의 첫 저서 '한국대중음악사 산책'을 발매하고 못 다한 얘기를 이 지면을 통해 마음껏 해보는 기회를 갖게 되어 1년간 행복하게 지냈다. 다음 기회에 다른 모습으로 찾아뵙겠다.

" Popular music reflects the times. If so, what elements of popular music reflect the times? There may be rhythms, lyrics, and images of singers, but the singer's voice is the element that best reflects the sentiments of the public.
Eun-hee was published in the October 1971 issue of Myeong-rang. She looked Cute and happy before plastic surgery. 'Hisa' Eun-hee, published in the November 1973 issue, changed herself into a more Barbie doll look after plastic surgery.
A good example of a refection of the times is Lee Nan-young, who was the queen of trot during the Japanese colonial period, and Mi-ja who became the queen of the new trot in the 1960s. These two singers are completely different in voice and ingenuity. Lee Nan-young reflected the woman's self, which contained the emotions of the farming and fishing village before the modernization, whereas the junior singer, Imiza, achieved a modernization of the Korean trot with a new voice that reflected the self of the urbanized and modernized woman.
From this point of view, voices of singers with guitars in the 1970s differed in essence from senior singers. The twin portfolio (?) alone was not presented by it only by a bold, profound male voice like Nam-il Hae, nor by an over-emotional voice squeezing its inner sadness like with Bae Ho. There was little vibration, and it was a thin, clean, emotionally restrained voice.
The voices of other female singers were also different in nature from their seniors. Park In-hee, a female member of Touaemua, was loved by young people with an intelligent voice that makes her feel cool. Choi An-soon, a member of Lanaerospo (Lana & Rospo) who later became independent, was the owner of a unique voice with a clear, thin vibration like a jade ball.
Yang Hee-eun, who appeared at the same time, added a clear and clean voice to a strong and powerful singing, signaling the emergence of a new female self, active and independent, by completely removing the beauty of the female singer who seemed to be talking about something before.
Eun Hee succeeded in entering the mainstream music area by spreading changes in the sort of voices of these female singers. Eun-hee, a native of Jeju Island, has been singing at a salon in Seoul since 1970. She met Han-min and began practicing Lanaerospo in August 1970. After recording the first album in December, she withdrew with Hanmin immediately, but the first album of Lannaerospo released in January 1971 became 'Hi-Hae' and the song voice became Eunhee's.
However, thanks to the possibility, Eun-hee released her own collection in July 1971, for which 'Heart Ring' became a big hit, leading to a 70,000 home run by the end of the year. As a result, he received the Rookie of the Year award in 1971 at MBC. At the time of the recording, Eun-hee's mother dreamed of a tiger climbing up to the sky in a cloud.
Eunhee's voice was unique. Clear and clean, it had the charm of giving an intellectual feeling like that of chanson. The charm of chewing and pronounced the lyrics one by one was unmatched. Eun-hee's vibration was not a vertical shaking up and down, but a new dimension that was shaking horizontally from side to side.
This attraction attracted attention, and there was a scouting competition for Eunhee in the music industry. Eun-hee, who was disappointed that she had been neglected the hospitality after the first record that Grand Record had signed for 10,000 years a month for a year and a half with which she had a huge hit. When Jill Cera offered a total of 1.4 million won in the district record, she notified Grand Record of the termination and signed a double contract with the district.
Eunhee was not only unique in his voice, but also for her image/look. Eun-hee, who loved red with a strong image, enjoyed wearing red long dresses and owned 20 pairs of shoes and over 400 stage costumes. Her interest in appearances was so great that in 1972, after plastic surgery on his eyes and nose, she transformed himself into a Barbie doll and with this said goodbye to her cute and happy past.
In the first album, Eunhee took a recording of the guitar accompaniment, but from the second album, she received a song from the established composers such as Hong Hyun-girl, Park Chun-seok, Namkuk, and Jung Min-seop, and released the album and transformed it into an image of a general singer.
Eun-hee moved to the United States in 1975, married a Korean-American in 1976, studied fashion, returned to Korea in 1985, went to a beauty salon in Jeju Island, and in 1988, worked in a dressing room in Gangnam.
Korean guitar guitar music started from YMCA 'singlong Y' in the mid-1960s and in the 'Se Sibong' (club) in the music audition room until the 1970s. However, since 1970, Tua Emua (Toi et Moi), Lanaerospo (Lana et Rospo), and Eunhee have been delivering successful hits in the mainstream music bands, elevating the stature of acoustic guitar with younger generations struggling with trot and standard pop music. Eunhee's new voice and popular image contributed greatly to this situation.

지금은 남도에서 패션디자이너로서의 길을 걷고 있지만 오래 전 은희씨는 청아한 목소리를 지닌 매력적인 가수였다. 1960년대 말부터 1970년대 초반까지 솔로로, 한때는 타계한 한민씨와 함께 혼성듀오로 활동하면서 '꽃반지 끼고', '사랑해', '등대지기' 등을 부르며 가요계를 주름잡았다. 단순하고 쉬운 멜로디에 여성의 감성이 물씬 묻어나는 노래들로 인기를 누렸었다.

From the late 1960's to the early 1970's, he worked as a solo and mixed duo with Hanmin who once passed away, singing the flower ring, `` I love you, '' and `` the lighthouse keeper. 한창 잘 나가던 그녀는 결혼과 함께 미국행 비행기에 몸을 실었다. '새로운 세계'를 찾아서. 뉴욕주립대 패션학과(FIT)에 입학한 그녀는 의상디자인과 메이크업 등 이른바 토털 패션디자인을 배웠다.
1985년 귀국한 은희씨는 서울 압구정동에 '코디네이션센터'를 열어 국내 공연·예술계에 '코디'란 개념을 전파했다. 갤러리도 개설했다. 사업가로 대변신을 한 것. 이를 계기로 문화계 인사들과 자연스레 어울리면서 우리 문화의 중요성을 일깨웠다.

이 노래는 1971년 7월 발매 황우루기획 작품집인
"은희 전속기념 1집"의 타이틀곡이다.
이 노래의 작곡자에 대한 오해와 소문이 퍼져있어 혼란스럽기도 하다.
이 곡은 1971년 은희 솔로 데뷔 음반에는 은희 작사, 은희 편곡으로 되어있다.

"With Flower Rings" is a song that is very representable for Eun-hee. This song was released in July 1971. This is the title track of "Eunhee Exclusive Memorial Vol. 1". The misunderstandings and rumors of the composer are confusing. This song is said to be composed and written and arranged by Eunhee on her 1971's solo debut album. Still its original composer is unclear. It has been marked on various records as a Eun-hee's composition, as a transformational composition, or as a Jung Min-seop composition. Even Taiwanese singer Zhang Cheong-bang's song Hwagyeji (花 戒指) is said to be the original song. It is a song that was once said to be "orthodox". Mr. Byun's testified that he wrote the music based on Eunhee's handwritten sheet music, while Kim Se-hwan's testimony declared that he was singing it from downtown first. At the end of the 1960s, the song was composed by a Korean-Japanese who participated as being part of a Japanese team at the Philippine Asian Jamboree Competition.
