강홍식 / 姜 弘 植 - Kang Ho-Sik (Chang Ho-Sik)

The first 9 songs of this compilation show how Kang Ho Sik must have been involved in early song music of the first movies with sound and music.

This sounds more adventurous than conservative, of which the music still has the humpapa rhythms of Japanese occupation rules, but the arrangements and songs still show pleasant variations.

The first track has a more classical-orchestrated feel to the music arrangements with clarinet, piano, flutes, violin and percussion. The second track is walzing a bit, here the happy life rhythms and songs are introduced. The third track shows group singing and duets of male and female voice, rhythmically like the joy of clapping hands with it. The fourth track shows Hawaiian guitar, violins, flutes. More modern is the 5th track. This shows worked out flute solos with harp-like strums in a more classically arranged mode, a slower singing like a pre-trot approach with its own originality, and with some violin playing close to the singing. The 8th track features more Hawaiian solo guitar and has very much, this roaring thirties feeling. The song itself sounds like a classic. After some male singing, a female singer takes over. The last track also shows this happy sound, a rather Japanese-flavoured melody accompanied by violin, with solos on clarinet and contra rhythms on banjo and by the small string and percussion orchestra. "Healthy"-vivid music.

V.A.: "Pork Song" (2CD)

CD1-10 산수갑산 / Sansugapsan

This is a slow song with arrangements of strings and other variety of instruments. It sounds a bit like a lullaby but with a more pronounced deep male voice. I assume this refers to some old traditional. It has that kind of sensitivity to mix rhythm, words and melody which you can hardly find elsewhere than in songs of much older traditions which still purchase that sensitivity to these melting aspects.

유성기로 듣던 가요사 vol 2

4 개나리 고개 / Forsythia head (1934)

* 5 조선타령(朝鮮打令) / A Chosun Tale (1934). -Korean folk-

* 6 처녀(處女) 총각(總角) / Virgin bachelor (1934)

15 풍년(豊年)맞이 / Thanksgiving Day (1934)

with 조금자 / Jo Keum-Ja

The first song I assume is a Korean folk traditional with new contexts of jazz and new folk. It has a gently rocking rhythm. The second track, "A Chosun Tale" starts with the setting of birds sounds. We have a walking rhythm, clearly the singer is telling a Korean folk tale with girls and men singing and accompanying in the background and of course somewhat jazzy/new folk arrangements. It is a very filmic and has an almost visual setting in its concept. Also "Virgin Bachelor" sounds like a happy folk song with singing and humming and a small orchestra accompanying the song perfectly with not more arrangements than exactly needed to make it a colorful experience.

The last track is a duet of new Korean folk performed and orchestrated / arranged in a way this could fit into a musical very well, while remaining on the more intimate level of a small chamber music setting of performing.

유성기로 듣던 가요사 vol 3

' 청춘 타령 / Youth Taing (1935)

This song sounds like an arranged Korean Folk song. It is not the best track to lift out.

첫사랑의 꿈 / Dream of First Love (1937.7)

with 미스리갈 / Miss Regal

* 처녀총각 / Maiden Bachelor (1934)

따이나 / Dinah (1936)

I have also heard "Dream of First Love" that was not listed on any of the compilations. It is a children song-like and simplistic cabaret like duet with Miss Regal. "Maiden Bachelor" is a beautiful calm, pleasant and attractive melodic partly humming song. "Dinah" (to be found on Youtube) is an American classic from 1925 which was one of the most covered songs of the time.* It is a fine enough simplified but effective jazz song, a duet with 안명옥 / An, Myeong-Ok.

I have also heard a Japanese version from Tokyo, called ダイナ (Dinah) by ジョー奥村、H.Oジャズバンド / Joe Okumura & H.O Jazz Band to be found on 大東京ジャズ (Jazz in the Great Tokyo 1925-1940) and another version from 1934 by ディック・ミネ / Dick Minne to be found on 青春歌年鑑 戦前編(2) 昭和9年~12年 / Japanese Popular Music - 1934-1937 - Pre-War Vol. 2.

BIOGRAPHIES:

Life : December 9, 1902-October 9, 1971 (68 years old), active from 1917-1971.

He was born in South Pyongyang. On the Japanese middle school he learned certain dances and songs from Tokyo Opera. He debuted as an actor in several movies from the Korean film industry in 1925. Since then, he remained active on stage and theatre. Several new folk songs were recorded for Colombia Records like "delightful rural inspiration", "lady of the beautiful fall" or pop songs like "I'll see you again, farewell" or "melancholy of the harbour". From 1930 onwards he reappeared in movies. Since August 15, 1945, he was in charge of the art performances in Hwanghae, and climbed up to be production manager of the North National Film studios in 1947.

From rough translations of an on line Korean article I could make up that one of the song, “The delightful countryside Inspiration” (Lyrics Beomoh, foreign songs, 1936, Columbia Records), is the arrangement of a Japanese song. “Bulryeojyeo” is a comical song that came mainly from Japanese stage theater where at the end of the song a comedian called Skinny (yangseokcheon) and someone called Ttungttungyi (Yanghun), as a duo gained popularity as a favourite song of seoyoungchun comedy.

Rough translation: (with mistakes)

The life of singer Kang Hong-sik (姜 弘 植, 1902-1971) started as an actor. In the heart of a bright young man Kang Hong-sik, who was the son of Pyongyang when the film industry came into colonial Korea, he was already pounding with curiosity and passion for the new world.

Having a diligent and active mind, he went away without going high school, and immediately fled to Japan to experience the foundations of the movie town, including apprentices and actors from opera troupes. There was no way to suppress the boiling curiosity like an active volcano about a newspaper called film, as if a moth ran away in the distance.

What has so enthralled the blood and heart of Kang Hong-sik?

His birth in 1902 was a time when our people had left everything to the organized abuses and exploitation of the colonial imperialists without the proper effort to escape feudal bondage. At the time of the crisis when you could learn anything and earn anything, you might have felt that Kang Hong-sik was a true channel through which to break through the crisis.

This gave him the best fit of many popular art genres and suited his temperament and tastes, and he was the singer who sang on stage. During the performance, the blank space between the acts was called the interlude, which was a free extra for the audience. It was the interlude singer who turned this freeness into pleasure.

The audience's reaction to the song of Kang Hong-sik, which composed for the interlude with a thick bass baritone, was explosive. The tone of Kang Hong-sik revealed a strange finish. What a pity for lost friendliness? It had the ability to evoke an attachment to the essence and to boil it with an intense desire for recovery. That was the secret of Kang Hong-sik's creation.

Not only did Kang Hong-sik enter into a full-fledged role as a singer, but also shortly after the leading record companies in Japan began opening branches in Seoul. In April 1933, Kang Hong-sik made his debut as a full-length singer presenting his first film, The Night of the Moon, Written by Wangpyeong, Kim Tanpo, and Poli Dol 19060.

Subsequently, moving to Victa Records, his singer career began to gain more wings. As a singer in September 1933, Sam Soo Gapsan (written by Kim An-seo, composed by Kim Kyo-sung, Kang Hong-sik, and Victa 49233), Kang Hong-sik's share price rose as a singer. At this time, Columbia Records had offered a transfer, and from 1933 to 1936 the world was set up for Kang Hong-sik.

-<Samsugapsan>

I want to go to Samsugapsan

Samsugabap Mountain

Oh, the mountains are only white clouds

Going to Samsugapsan I can't go to Samsugapsan

Do not know the road

Three times as long as three times with water

Samsugapsan Admenya Samsugapsan I can't go

Devil is my heart

Ah, I'm a flyman

I can't go to my hometown

I'm nervous

Oh, I miss Samsugapsan

In particular, the rhythm of traditional hue and the lingering feeling of lingering feelings, and the song 'Virgin Bachelor', wittyly utilizing such sentiments, gave great comfort, encouragement, and encouragement to the tired colonial people at that time. Everywhere in the country, there were a lot of people humming the Virgin Bachelor's song.

The celebrity bachelor (virgin bachelor) (composed by Bum Oh, composed by Kim Joon-young, Columbia 40489) was released in February 1934. With this song, Kang Hong-sik's status has firmly established itself as a popular record singer with an actress's career. The song was made with a unique sense and skill of Kim Joon-young, who was in charge of music at the company's Dandansa. At a ryokan behind Seoul National House, Kang Hong-sik, who became intoxicated or drunk when the troupe enjoyed time drinking, sang <Hungtayeong> as a hum. Kim Joon-young, who had heard this found this so much fun, he immediately moved back to the music writing and <Virgin Bachelor> was born.

-<Virgin Bachelor>

Spring has come, spring has come to the breast of a virgin

I'm going to the vegetables

Wind blowing in the wind Arirang Tayeong flies

Even with the bachelor's chest

Spring has come to me, blood is boiling

The hum is composed too, it sounds nice

Spring lady long sigh throwing basket

I will fold the willows and lay half on both sides.

Jang Do-don's hand blowing a flute.

The song is really blowing in the spring breeze

Old bachelor threw a sack

You're in Shin Se-ta-Ryung while playing the flute.

On the spring of March, when buds sprout and the air tickles the ball, listening to or singing this compositional song with a soothing and delicate traditional color tone makes the spring more exciting and enjoyable. This record has sold over 100,000 copies, which is a huge sale. The old song <Virgin Bachelor> is a favorite song of both Koreas. It is one of the few songs that surpassed division. In a popular poll surveyed by a magazine, Kang Hong-sik was ranked third.

Since 1934, Kang Hong-sik's representative songs include "Hold This Glass'' (composed by Kim An-seo, composed by Shin-jin, Columbia, 40491), "Cheongtae-ryeong'' (composed by Yoo-sun Yoo, composed by Joon-young Kim, Columbia, 40610) Lyrics written by Yeon-hyeon Cho, Columbia 40565 Composition, Columbia 40605) and more than 10 songs.

Among the songs left by Kang Hong-sik, many of them are new folk songs. Shin Min-yo <Youth> is a song that was greatly loved by the public. Kang Hong-sik's compositional method and this song were exquisitely blended with each other, and this part was very encouraging to the daily lives of the colonial people.

Yalu River Voyeur

Phalaenopsis(?) come to see you, don't stop

If you have flowers and leaves, you won't find anything.

Ehe Ehe Youth Have a good day

The Seven Elders are wrapped around their love

Come on, sing and dance

You are a young man.

Even if a bunch of flowering plants blooms in the old tree

It's a flower without fragrance

Ehe Ehe Youth Have a good day

Let's call him to cook alcohol

Come on, sing and dance

You are a young man.

Eh deep night bell crying

Teardrops on white pillows

Ehe Ehe Youth Have a good day

Bloom before watering the flower garden

Come on, sing and dance

You are a young man.

-<Youth>

Rowing on the Icheon Li Yalu River

The old voyeur who lives alone.

Someone left behind in the rain

Soaked with tears

Watching the virgins wash by the river

When a Rafter Sings a Song

Even the cold news crosses the river

It's a searing throat.

The masses were immersed in Kang Hong-sik's life-threatening Tajo. As a lyricist, he was the main combination of poets such as poet Yudo-soon and poet Kim An-seo. As a composer, I mostly partnered with Kim Joon-young.

Indeed, ``Tongdong Comes up'' (composed by Bum-oh, Kim Joon-young, and Columbia), with its soothing tunes and cheerful themes, is indispensable. The song was made of four beats that made the morning scenery of a small fishing village on the east coast a folk song. It is like a beautiful lyrical landscape dealing with Namjungne who returns with joy of allegiance and women of muzzle waiting for them.

-<Mongdong comes up>

There's a lot of fire in here

If you sing a song with a strong voice,

Beach virgins beckon

I caught you, I caught a whale like a house

The guy that the gear was trying to catch.

The virgin love of the beach virgins is mine

I'm going to break up

I'm afraid of this wave

Beach virgins are scared

As Hong entered the late 1930s, Kang Hong-sik's songs gradually moved away from the public's attention. As the activities of professional singers have been sharply strengthened, singers who cross the genres of plays, movies, and genres have lost their place.

In addition, in the climate where the trot music swept the whole music world, the Tajo-jojo, which seems to be the reality of Kang Hong-sik, and the traditional color tone, were pushed to the periphery. Isn't it the process of life that you have to accept the trends and to cry and eat mustard when you are gone?

Singer Kang Hong-sik, away from the center of popularity, tries to return to theatrical film world, but there is no place for herself. Kang Hong-sik, who left for his hometown in Pyongyang shortly after the division of North and South, became a pioneer in the world of North Korean cinema, which had no content at that time, and came to a new dream and passion.

He also had two daughters with Jeon Ok, an actress and singer. One is Kang Hyo-sil of South Korea and the other is Kang Hyo-sun of North Korea. All acted as actors. Kang Hyo-sil married Actor Choi Mu-ryong and gave birth to Choi Min-soo. I think that households and lineages are this exact. He died in 1971, laying the foundations for North Korean cinema. It is said that his tomb is located in the Patriot Hills of Pyongyang.
