Radio show comments: "Track 2 shows a strange but convincing mix of a certain almost pathetic song emotionality with progressive or psych band elements. Some very good songs and prog/psych "rock" arrangements here. Track 7 is also with some great backing vocals."
I didn't expect an album from 1987 (as it was listed) to be very good, but the cover and natural look in the photograph of this album made me try this album anyhow. It is of course a nearly all song based pop/rock album with a good singing voice. Afterwards, when I looked up more details about this artist, it seemed that this album was from 1978, not 1987.
There are some lush orchestrations in the first track but also a dominant 'rock' band with clear drumming and percussion and touches of electric guitars with even some wahwah, effects some sax playing completely in a 70s way was something I did not expect. And all following tracks except the last one fit that way.
The second track has a psych melancholic organ (and a few electronic effects) with electric bass/drums playing along on a slower song.
The third mellow-melancholic waltz is accompanied by lush orchestration, electric bass and drums, electric piano, acoustic guitar arrangements and some sax. The (in a convincing way) pathetic sad fourth track has background rain, some Gilmourish electric guitar effects and bluesy guitar, some far background keyboard orchestration and theremin.
Also the 5th track is sad, and is accompanied by electric piano, drums, bass and similar electric guitar, some hand waving backing vocals.
The 6th track is lighter more up tempo pop with some keyboards too.
The 7th track has a psych beginning and ending with electric guitar and organ and backing male vocals, still a pop/rock song, with a convincing beautiful Americanised accompaniment.
The more up tempo 8th track returns to some orchestrations with the full rock band (including electric piano).
The 10th track is an acoustic track.
Then suddenly, the concluding 11th track starting with a brass orchestration, seems to be or sound like a communist marching folk music song with disciplined male and female choir singers singing full breast together. It has the effect of a filmic joke, but probably was a serious addition, not sure in which context or with what association.

모든 것을 솟아 부은 한국 록음악의 명작 70년대 국내에서 발표된 음반이라고 믿기 어려울 만큼 진보적이며 완벽한 사운드는 귀를 의심하게 한다. 오정선의 파워 넘치는 록 보컬과 여섯개의 손가락으로 연주하는 기타 휭거링은 <비야 내려라>에서 절정을 이룬다. 보 브러멀스(The Beau Brummels)의 을 번안한 오정선의 최대 히트곡 <마음>을 비롯해서 전반에 걸친 실험적 사운드는 이 음반의 가치를 재평가 할 만한 당위성을 설명하고 있다. 또한 오정선은 인기 가수이라는 선입견으로 인해 그동안 정당한 음악적 평가를 받지 못했다. 그리고 인기가수였음에도 오정선에 대한 정보가 매우 제한적이고 부족해 ‘사망설’까지 나도는 미스테리 가수로 남아있다.

BIOGRAPHYCAL NOTES:
오정선 - '마음'- 1978년, 오정선과 현재 SM 엔터테인먼트의 사장인 이수만은 같은 노래를 발표했다. 미국 밴드 보 브루멜스가 1965년에 빌보드 싱글차트 8위에 랭크시킨 'Just a little'을 번안한 '마음'이었다. 국내 혼성 듀엣 라나에로스포의 멤버였던 오정선은 성우 출신답게 낭랑한 음색과 안정된 가창력으로 높은 인기를 누리며 이수만에게 판정승을 거두었다. 1970년대 초반 라나에로스포를 나온 오정선은 한참 후인 1978년에 첫 번째 솔로앨범을 공개했다. '장미'와 '길가에 앉아서'로 유명한 남성 듀오 4월과 5월 리더 백순진이 제작한 오정선의 데뷔앨범에서 백순진은 '마음'에 공을 들였다. 그가 고등학생 때 스쿨밴드에서 자주 연주해서 애착을 갔고 있었던 'Just a little'은 오정선의 청아한 음색과 사이키델릭한 분위기가 묘하게 어울리는 고품격 노래로 다시 탄생한 것. 곱고 아름다운 노래들이 인기를 누리던 1970년대 후반에 몽환적인 프로그레시브 록의 접근법을 선보인 '마음'은 다른 가요들과는 확연히 달랐다. 어둡고 을씨년스런 도입부와 음침한 백 코러스 그리고 아이언 버터플라이의 사이키델릭 명곡 'In a gadda da vida'의 건반 연주가 오버랩되는 후반부는 오정선의 아름다운 용모, 맑은 음색과 정반대의 접점에 위치하지만 이 모든 것들이 하나의 완전체로 귀결한다. 음과 양, 물과 불, 남자와 여자, 어둠과 밝음이라는 동양의 자연 섭리가 '마음'에서 작용한다. About Oh Jung-sun-'Heart' :
In 1978, Oh Jung-sun and Lee Soo-man, now president of SM Entertainment, released the same song. The American band Beau Brummels was a ``heart'' who wrote "Just a little", which was ranked 8th on the Billboard single chart in 1965. Oh Jung-sun, who was a member of the domestic mixed duet Lanaerospo, won the victory over Lee Soo-man, enjoying high popularity with his fluffy tone and stable singing ability.
Oh Jung-sun, who left Lanaerospo in the early 1970s, released his first solo album in 1978. In his debut album, produced by April' & May's leader Baek Sun-jin, famous for 'roses' and 'sitting on the road', Baek Sun-jin worked on 'heart'. 'Just a little', which he played frequently in school bands when he was a high school student, was reborn as a high-quality song that harmonizes with Oh Jung-sun's elegant tone and psychedelic atmosphere. In the late 1970s, when beautiful and beautiful songs were popular, 'heart', which showed a dream-like progressive rock approach, was quite different from other songs.
While the dark and sultry intro, the dismal back chorus and the keystrokes of Iron Butterfly's psychedelic masterpiece `` In a gadda da vida '' overlap, the latter half lies at the point of the opposite of the beautiful appearance, clear tone of Oh Jung-sun, but all in one piece. 멜로디도 아주 좋았지만 무엇보다 가사가 좋아서 특히 기억에 남는 노래가 있다. 까마득하게 오래 전... 아마 내가 '어여쁜 소년'이었던 초등학교 5학년 아니면 6학년 때였을 것으로 기억한다. 오정선의 <마음>이라는 노래. 오정선은 소년이 보기에 무척이나 청순한 느낌의 누나였다. 목소리도 예뻤다. 나중에 알게 된 바로 오정선은 라나에로스포 5기 여성 보컬 출신의 실력파라고. 한편 이 편안한 노래는 여러 사람들이 부르고 다녔는데, 남자들은 이 노래에서 '어여쁜 소년의 손에...' 대신 '어여쁜 소녀의 손에...'라고 가사를 바꾸어 부르곤 했다.
당시에는 가수들이 노래를 꽤 잘 불렀다. 가요 프로그램에 나온 가수들이 자기 노래 외에 외국곡이나 다른 가수들의 노래들까지 자신들의 색깔로 척척 불러댄 것은 결코 저작권에서 자유롭기 때문만은 아니었다. 더구나 가수의 가창력이 바닥까지 드러나는 국제 가요제 같은 것도 참 많았고, 특히 요즘에는 보기 힘든 광경 - 쇼 프로에서 여러 가수들이 함께 노래를 나누어 부르는 경우도 많았다. 이런 것들을 보면 당시 가수들은 자신의 목소리와 가창력에 자신이 있었고, 노래부르는 것을 참으로 즐겼던 것 같다.
그리고 그 시절의 노래들은 근본적으로 남녀 노소가 함께 부르고 같이 즐길 수 있는 성질의 것이었다. 요즘 유행하는 랩이나 댄스 음악과는 달라도 너무나 달랐던 것이다. 굳이 가수들의 가창력을 비교하지 않더라도 요즘의 노래에는 아니, 요즘의 '문화'에는 무언가 크게 중요한, 또는 소중한 어떤 것이 빠져있는 것같다. 비록 그 시절의 표현법들이 지금에는 촌스럽고 유치하게 느껴짐에도 불구하고 그렇다.
오정선의 <마음>을 오랜만에 들었다. 이 노래의 원곡은 미국의 락 밴드 Young Rascals의 1966년 데뷔 앨범에 수록된 <Just a Little>로 잘못 알려져 있는데, 이보다 2년 전에 Beau Brummels라는 컨트리/포크 락 밴드의 싱글 <Just a Little>을 원곡으로 보는 것이 옳다(1965년에 앨범으로도 발매됨). Beau Brummels는 활동 기간은 짧았지만 미국의 락 음악에 있어서 소위 'British Invasion'이라 불리는 영국 음악에 대응하여 인기를 끌었던 거의 첫 번째 미국 락 밴드로서 역사적 가치를 갖는다고.
세 곡을 비교해 볼까? 모두 나름대로의 맛이 있고 다 좋지만, 아무리 들어 보아도 나에게는 역시 오정선의 <마음>이 최고다. 다음으로 Young Rascals. 아무래도 깔끔한 Beau Brummels에 비해 더 퇴폐적이고 끈끈한 맛이 맥주 한잔 걸치며 듣기에 제격이다. Beau Brummels는 연주와 보컬이 맑은 느낌. 그 시대(60년대 중반)를 대표하는 것같은익숙한 연주로 홀리스와도 비슷하다. 지금 나오는 노래는 당연 Beau Brummels의 것. 원곡 찾기에서는 원곡을 듣는 것이 원칙이니

The melody was very good, but most of all, the lyrics were so memorable. A long time ago ... I remember it when I was in fifth or sixth grade when I was a 'pretty boy'. Oh Jung-sun's song <Heart>. Oh Jung-sun was a song which felt so innocent. The voice was pretty. Oh Jung-sun I learned later is the 5th vocalist from a talent group Lanaerospo. On the other hand, this relaxed song was sung by many people, and the men used to change the lyrics to 'the girl's hand ...' instead of 'the girl's hand ...'.
At the time, singers sang quite well. It wasn't just because they were free from copyright that the singers in the K-pop program sang the songs of foreign songs and other singers in their own colors. In addition, there were many international singing festivals, where singers' singers showed their bottoms, and many singers shared their songs together in a rare show-show pro these days. I haven't heard Oh Jung-sun's <Heart> a long time. The song's original song was incorrectly known as Just a cover of the American rock band Young Rascals' 1966 debut album, and two years earlier, a single from the country / folk rock band Beau Brummels. (also released as an album in 1965). Beau Brummels was short-lived but had historical value as the first American rock band to become popular in the United States for its so-called 'British Invasion'.
Let's compare the three songs All have their own tastes and all are good, but no matter how you listen, Oh Jung-sun's <Heart> is the best. Next, Young Rascals. Compared to the clean Beau Brummels, it's more decadent and sticky than a beer. Beau Brummels shows clear playing and vocals. This seems to be a pop/rock compilation with different bands from the 70s.
I recognise a comparable sound to Pearl Sisters (2), and Oh Jung Sun with a great track (track 3, but there seems to be 3 tracks on it, so two are less essential), April & May (track 4 is best, and two more or less good tracks from which I thought were by similar dual harmony singers). Some of the listed songs are more mainstream, but there is use of fuzz guitar more often.
The Oh Jung Sun track, track 3, I think is the most essential one.
The compilation is good enough as an introduction to know what to expect from Korean pop/rock music but it is in fact not really so special.
