Tracks with * I consider essential listens or classics, or tracks to check out for sure. It are tracks that makes them also very suitable for western radioshow airplay. Tracks that are only underlined can be considered fine tracks you might better check out as well, but I am not sure how essential they are.
Like the other two albums I know from the duo, you can hear a brilliant dual vocal innocence and refinement which was rather unique. Especially for some of the covers there is a pastoral psych-folk flavour comparable to let's say Sallyangie or so. Covered are known sometimes mainstream western hits, with the least favourite Simon And Garfunkel's. Further we have Everly Brothers' "let it be me", "Edelweiss" (still ok!), Donovan's "Jennifer Juniper", Nancy Sinatra' "Summer Wine", Donovan's or Joan Baez' "Donna Donna" and Gene Pitney's "If I Didn't Have A Dime", of which some versions are really sweet, soft and sensitive. I especially like side B.

Highly recommended folk duo, and a very pleasant, succesful release. Also the covers are very good (sung in Korean). I could easily airplay each track. There is no weak second. Very beautiful !! "Sunday Morning" is convincingly romantic.
PS. I thought at first this duo was called Chang-Shik and Yoon Hyong-Jo, but these are the names of a different duo, Twin Folio, who are regarded as the first 'folk' artists who did recordings. The Toi Et Moi members were Pil-won Lee (left) and In-hee Park (right).

PS. "Maria Elena" is a very different song with male harmonies and Spanish guitar, a serenade in 50s style. All the songs before that were love songs with dual vocals and sweet acoustic arrangements in a rather UK folk sort of folk style. "Farewell Carnival" is the second Spanish guitar and tabla love serenade with male voices only. And of course also the last track is in this style. This makes that the album contains two different styles. The second one might be a bit more mainstream-orientated but the romantic association in it might as well be a very deliberate choice.

Very similar third album by the duo.
"Bookends Theme" I recognize from Simon & Garfunkel. The almost Spanish guitar influence and pauses makes it interpretation rather unique and delicate. "Tower Tall" is with male harmony harmonies and also a bit more classical Spanish guitar, with congas. "Sad Love" is with male harmony vocals and guitars once more. In the end, such songs give a more mainstream effect. The last track is in that vein too, with some organ notes here and their, still this is again more in that 50s tradition. Luckily most songs are still empowered by this the duo folk delicacy. Anyhow, the second style makes the album less powerful even though this is fine enough, it is too different easy listening compared to it.

"I got this 'un for the promise of a Velvet Underground cover despite the fact that this male / female duo of Korean descent were more or less bred of the early-sixties Greenwich Village folkie idiom (complete with a Simon and Garfunkel cover!) instead of the dark junkie visions of the Lower East Side that you all know I so desire. Considering how big heroin is over there you'd think these two would have been copycatting the entire Velvets oeuvre with ease, but I guess their heads were a whole lot clearer'n I gave 'em credit for!
But really, the prospect of hearing a '71 vintage VU cover from halfway 'round the world did seem enticing even if it were being done by some Korean folkies who probably wish they were at the Cafe Bizarre 'stead of a country that was being threatened with North Korean missiles for nigh on twenty (now sixty!) years.
Even if there weren't any Velvets covers to lure me in Toi et Moi do fine with a halfway decent if commercial folk music that doesn't sound too gravestone rubbing introspective for my own tastes...sung mostly in Korean, the duo strum guitars (the male member even playing a melodica at times!) and warble some rather pleasant ditties that don't exactly grate on ya like some of the less subtle masters of the form like Melanie did. And not only that but they made music that was driving if relaxing, at times imbued with the early-sixties all-inclusive credo to the point where even your stodg-o pop can tap foot to some of this while no one else is looking. The sound is great even if it was taken from vinyl and crackles are audible, and I can't complain about the S&G cover (even their take of "I Who Have Nothing" fits in swell!) because the two pull it off with just about as much taste as Lou Reed and John Cale might've during the reign of the Falling Spikes. Not only that, but the gal on the cover has a sweet, non-twee voice and sure is a looker who makes me wanna cop more snaps of her lovely visage via google (not to many there, unfortunately).
As you can tell Toi et Moi got a whole lot goin' for 'em, but where the heck's the Velvets song I was so looking forward to??? Sure ain't here! *** "
한국 최초의 혼성듀오 뚜와에무와의 음반이 1, 2집에 이어 3집이 재발매 되었다. 박인희의 역량이 더욱 돋보이는 제3집은 1집과 2집에 비해 구하기가 어려워 7080포크 매니아들에게 많은 리퀘스트를 받았던 희귀 음반이다.
뚜와에무와의 1, 2집을 CD로 재발매한지 얼마 되지 않아 7080 포크 매니아들 사이에 1, 2집 보다 3집이 오히려 LP로 구입하기 더 어렵다는 리퀘스트가 쇄도하는 바람에 뚜와에무와 제 3집을 리 마스터 발매하게 되었다. 이필원의 우수에 젖은 목소리와 하모니카 연주도 매력적이지만 전 앨범에 비해 3집에서는 재킷 디자인에서부터 알 수 있듯이 박인희의 비중이 훨씬 커 진 것을 알 수 있다.

Toi et Moi’s records are the finest of this guitar folk period (active in Korea and Japan at that time). We have partially some Korean folk covers of known Western pop songs arranged with sweet dual harmony vocals and acoustic guitar and some originals in the guitar folk dual singing style. The fresh, light and sweet earnest innocence of these recordings is unique and incomparable to what happened in any other country with similar songs and style, making records like this highly recommended. Please help me to figure out which originals were used.
Somewhat unfortunate is that the album was split with some retro-old styled songs by Gok Choong-Joo arranged with strings and a bit of brass. It is not bad but in combination, this sounds pretty conservative when put next to each other as if these songs didn’t evolve with the future but rather were stuck into the past, which makes its contrast more tiresome then when it would have kept its own context. A part of the lyrics are in Chinese because Gok Choong-Joo actually was Chinese. These easy entertainment songs certainly don’t match and possibly would not have been rereleased if Toi et Moi hadn’t been recorded on the same album.

이필원과 박인희가 결성한 뚜아에무아는1967년 결성된 서수남과 현혜정에 이어 정식 팀 이름으로 활동한 두 번째 혼성듀엣이다. 1970년대에 혼성듀엣의 전성시대를 만개시킨 뚜아에무아의 상업적 성공은 이후 수많은 혼성듀엣의 등장을 불러왔다.
1968년 서울 명동의 음악명소 미도파살롱. 숙명여대 불문과를 졸업한 박인희는 인기MC로 사회생활을 시작했고, 이필원은 그곳을 주 무대로 활동한 밴드 타이거즈의 리더였다. 1969년 어느 날, 우연하게 두 사람이 무대에서 함께 노래를 불렀다. 노래를 듣고 매료된 평론가 이백천과 가수 조경수가 두 사람에게 정식 혼성듀엣 결성을 제안했다. 예상치 못했던 좋은 반응에 한껏 고무된 이필원과 박인희는 팀 결성을 결심했다.

혼성듀엣 전성시대를 연 "뚜와에무아"
이필원과 필생의 음악파트너인 박인희와의 만남은 1968년 서울 명동의 명소 미도파살롱에서 이뤄졌다. 당시 숙명여대 불문과를 졸업한 박인희는 미도파 살롱의 인기MC였고 이필원은 미도파살롱을 주 무대로 활동한 록밴드 '타이거즈' 리더였다. 1969년 어느 날, 우연하게 박인희와 이필원은 무대에서 세계적인 영국의 형제듀오 에브리 브라더스(EVERY BROTHERS)의 'LET IT BE ME'를 함께 불렀다. 우수어린 짙은 고독감이 배여 있는 이필원의 음색과 시적 감성이 묻어나는 서늘한 음색의 박인희가 빚어내는 처연하면서 달콤한 하모니는 객석에서 노래를 듣고 있던 평론가 이백천의 귀를 의심하게 했다. 이백천은 인터뷰를 통해 “두 사람의 화음을 듣는 순간, 곧장 다가오는 소리가 신선하고 곱다고 느꼈다. 서슴없이 TBC TV 방송출연을 제의했다. 내가 담당하던 프로에 나온 그들은 곧 인기프로그램인 「쇼쇼쇼」,「백화가요쇼」에도 출연했다”고 회고했다. 밴드의 보컬리스트로 활동한 조경수는 두 사람의 듀엣 결성을 적극적으로 제의했다. 팀명 ‘뚜아에무아’는 불어로 '너와 나'라는 뜻이다.
뚜와에무아는 1970년부터 1971년까지「뚜와에무아 히트앨범」시리즈 음반을 3장이나 연속해 발매했다. 이 음반은 시리즈의 시작인 1집 앨범으로 1970년 그랜드레코드공사를 통해 발매되었다. 데뷔앨범 커버를 장식한 사진과 같은 의상을 입은 이 앨범의 커버를 장식한 이필원, 박인희의 사진은 인천 송도 앞바다에서 촬영했다. 총 10곡이 수록된 뚜와에무아 1집 앨범과 전작인 데뷔앨범의 차이는 두 사람이 작사하고 작곡한 창작곡보다 당시에 대중적으로 각광을 받았던 외국 팝송 번안 곡들을 전면에 배치한 상업적 기획에 있다. 실제로 데뷔앨범에서 3곡이 수록된 창작곡은 '약속' 한 곡만 수록되었고 '에델봐이스', '썸머와인', '그대여! 그대여! 그대여!', '도나도나', '동전한닢' 등 번안 곡 5곡이 새롭게 녹음되었다. 번안 곡의 개사는 대부분 박인희가 진행했다. 앨범에 수록된 노래들은 단번에 재판을 거듭해서 찍어낼 정도로 공전의 인기몰이를 했다. 특히 창작곡 '약속'을 비롯해 '썸머와인', '도나도나', '제나파 쥬네파' 등 거의 모든 번안 곡들에 대한 당대 젊은 층의 반응은 뜨거웠다.
전작인 히트앨범 제 1집이 공전의 히트를 기록하자 2집을 발매했다. 한결 세련된 의상으로 촬영한 앨범 커버사진으로 장식된 이 앨범에는 총 10곡이 수록되었다. 특히 2집의 타이틀곡 '그리운 사람까리'는 이전까지 작사와 개사 작업에만 참여했던 뚜와에무아 여성멤버 박인희가 처음으로 작사하고 작곡한 첫 창작곡이다. 이 노래는 국내 여성포크가수가 발표한 최초의 창작곡으로 기록된다. 서늘한 목소리로 노래한 박인희와 환상의 화음을 넣어준 이필원의 궁합은 연속적인 히트를 기록했다. 데뷔앨범에 이미 발표되었던 이필원 곡 '발자욱'까지 다시 수록되며 이 앨범은 뚜와에무아 남녀 멤버의 창작곡이 모두 수록된 최초의 앨범이 되었다. 하지만 너무 짧은 제작기간으로 인해 독집으로 앨범을 제작하기에는 곡수가 부족했다. 남성사중창단 블루벨즈가 이미 발표했던 '희미한 옛사랑의 그림자', '마리아 에레나'등 번안 곡 3곡이 추가로 수록된 이유이다.
1집에 이어 2집도 연타석 기록하며 3집까지 제작되었다. 3집에는 데뷔앨범에서 '몰래'로 이미 발표했던 이필원의 창작곡 '몰래몰래' 등으로 히트 퍼레이드를 벌였다. 이에 1971년엔 중앙일보, 동양방송, 전남일보, 무등 가요대상 등 언론사에서 주는 가요대상까지 휩쓰는 뚜와에무아 돌풍이 일어났다. 특히 동양방송에서는 인기보컬그룹이었던 펄시스터즈와 키보이스를 제치고 뚜와에무아에게 가요대상 중창 부분의 대상 수상자로 선정했다. 이후 절정의 인기를 누린 뚜와에무아로 인해 무수한 혼성듀엣들이 양산되며 혼성듀엣 전성시대가 만개했다.
