시인과 - Siinkwa Chonjang / Poet and a Village Chief
Good new folk-pop / singer/songwriter album with an attractive post-Beatles harmony vocals driven sound. While often more pop, there's often a certain subtle/slightly pastoral approach to the arrangements. But also here we miss the understanding of the texts, which seem to have a big importance. 5th track has some small improvised-freaky -rocking electric guitar part into the more acoustic song.

Tracks that are underlined can be considered fine tracks you could check out for a closer listen, but I am not sure how essential they are. The other tracks are let's say ok.
There's a sophisticated delicate half acoustic partly electric picked folk sound with some keyboards too and the feeling of an inspired singer/songwriter and album concept behind this LP. For foreigners the overall musical evolution and expression might still be a bit sparse to work strongly enough and to convince outside its lyrical contexts.

There are harmonica bits, bird samples, and even a telephone at some points. He keeps mentioning a cat, but I don't know enough Korean to extrapolate further. 풍경 is an ultimate comfort song (feeling of admiring the beauty of the hometown you are returning to)."

The sophistication is felt mostly in a largest part of the first side of the album. This clearly is a singer/songwriter album with an acoustic foundation. This works for a while pretty well, also for foreign ears, through its slow melancholic developments of acoustic guitars, sparse flute and other arrangements, voice with a bit of reverb, but it can't catch the attention for too long after these most brilliant moments. Then, when the style somewhat changes as well, it also no longer as easily gets the deserved attention, making it harder to be considered as a an album that should also be tried outside South-Korea. It is clear what is the importance of the albums. But in foreign land, only just a few tracks are able to truly stand.
시인과 촌장은 뛰어난 비유와 은유, 그리고 현실 세계를 사는 사람들에게 주는 위로, 이상향에 대한 그리움, 그리고 촌장 하덕규의 종교적 진리 탐구에 대한 자세를 메시지로 담고 있는 그룹이다. 이들은 메인스트림, 언더 그라운드, 트로트까지 다채롭고 풍요로웠던 1980년대를 시적이고 철학적인 노랫말, 포크가 주는 투명함과 평안함으로 그 시절의 한 페이지를 장식했다. 팀의 리더 하덕규는 1980년 오종수, 정종찬과 트리오 바람개비를 결성하며 음악 활동을 시작했다. 아마추어 노래 자랑에서 입상한 이들은 이종환의 소개로 에서 노래를 불렀으며 이듬해에는 하덕규와 오종수 둘이서 시인과 촌장을 결성하며 자신들의 첫 앨범을 발표한다. 거의 전곡을 만든 하덕규의 노래는 풋풋함과 ‘짝사랑’, ‘밤 벚꽃놀이’ 등에서 보여주는 뛰어난 멜로디 전개로 이미 범상하지 않은 출발을 예고하고 있다. 이들과 너무도 어울리지 않는 군가와 리메이크 곡 ‘아름다운 사람’이 들어 있는 이 앨범은 하덕규 음악의 초기 정서를 발견할 수 있는 중요한 음반이다. 오종수의 개인 사업으로 솔로 앨범을 발표한 하덕규는 기타리스트 함춘호와 같이 시인과 촌장 2집을 발표한다. 엄청난 인기를 모은 이 앨범에는 비둘기 시리즈 ‘비둘기에게’, ‘비둘기 안녕’, ‘비둘기’ 등이 화제를 모았었고 알 스튜어트(Al Stewart)의 ‘Year of the cat’’을 연상시키는 ‘고양이’, ‘풍경’, ‘사랑일기’ 하덕규의 솔로 앨범에 수록되었던 ‘진달래’ 등 앨범의 전곡이 인기를 모으며 라디오의 단골손님으로 자리를 잡았다. 1집을 기억하지 못하는 사람들에게 시인과 촌장의 첫 앨범으로 기억되는 이 앨범은 상대방을 고양이에 비유한 고단수의 재치가 돋보이는 노랫말이나 삶의 소재를 깔끔한 인상으로 부여잡은 ‘사랑일기’ 등의 친근한 가사로 젊은층을 사로잡았다. 큰 인기를 모은 이 앨범으로 첫 콘서트를 열은 이들은 1988년 자신들 최고의 걸작 앨범 을 내 놓는다. 시인과 촌장이라는 이름으로 발표되었지만 하덕규 솔로 앨범이나 마찬가지인 이 앨범에서 하덕규는 자신의 세계관을 고운 노랫말과 알 수 없는 언어의 파편 속에 묻어두었다. 그리고 현실의 어려움을 다가올 미래와 ‘좋은 나라’로 대표되는 이상향의 기원으로 숨을 돌리고 있다. 더 큰 진리를 바라보고자 하는 노랫말 ‘숲’은 단연 앨범 최대의 백미이자 그의 가치관을 집대성하는 곡이다. 이 앨범은 아직까지도 시장에서 환영을 받고 있는, 그가 대중 음악인으로서 내놓은 가장 멋진 열매 중의 하나이다. 두 번째 콘서트를 열은 후 하덕규는 CBS에서 프로그램을 맡으면서 CCM 계열로 갔다. 그의 첫 번째 가스펠 앨범 을 필두로 그는 함춘호와 다시 재결성 하기까지 여러 장의 앨범 발표와 캠프 등을 통해 자신의 종교적인 음성만을 전파한다. 그리고 2000년이 되서야 하덕규와 함춘호는 2집을 발표한지 14년만에 다시 뭉친다. 역시 소프트웨어 쪽인 모든 곡과 가사는 하덕규가 썼고 1990년대를 찬란하게 수놓은 최고의 기타 세션맨 함춘호는 편곡과 어쿠스틱, 일렉트릭 기타 그리고 E-Bow를 연주했다. 기본적으로 서정성과 포크적 성향을 답습한 이들의 3집은 다양한 장르적 실험을 동반하고 있지만 이제는 너무나도 멀어져 버린 1980년대 르네상스기에 대한 그리움을 간직한 이들에겐 좋은 선물이 아니었고 이들의 이름을 잘 기억하지 못하는 젊은 세대에겐 그저 그런 앨범 이였다. 하지만 다시 대중 음악과 가교 역할을 하려 하는 이들의 노력은 계속되어야 한다. 그러면 언젠가는 자신들의 음악성과 대중성이 만나는 지점이 생길 것이다. 물론 좋은 음악을 꾸준히 발표하는 모습만 보여주더라도 이들은 자신의 몫을 다하는 것이다. 이제 우리도 인기에 연연하지 않고 자신의 음악세계를 고집하는 장인들이 많이 나올 때가 되었다.
"Poets and Village Chief is a groups that convey outstanding parables, metaphors, comforts to the people who live in the real world, longing for ideals, and attitudes about the search for religious truth.
They decorated the pages of the era with the poetic and philosophical words and folk transparency and tranquility of the 1980s, rich in content, different from the mainstream and trot music.
Team leader Ha Duck-kyu started music activities in 1980 with Oh Jong-soo, Jung Jong-chan and Trio Pinwheel. The winners of the amateur song sang in with the introduction of Lee Jong-hwan, and the following year, Hadeok-gyu and Oh Jong-soo formed their poet and village head, and released their first album.
Haduk-kyu's song, which almost made all his songs, is already unprecedented due to the outstanding melodies shown in the freshness, crush, and night cherry blossom viewing. This album, which contains a group song and a remake song, “Beautiful Man,” which does not suit them too much, is an important album to discover early emotions of Hadukgyu music.
Ha Deok-gyu, who released his first solo album as a private business of Oh Jong-soo, will release two poets and a village chief albums along with guitarist Ham Chun-ho. This hugely popular album featured the dove series 'To Dove,' 'Hi Dove', and 'Dove'. Scenery 'and' Love Diary 'all the songs of the album, such as' Azalea' recorded in the solo album of Ha Duck-gyu became popular as a regular customer of the radio.
This album, which is remembered as the first album by poets and village heads to those who can't remember the first album, is a familiar lyrics such as `` Love Diary '' that captures the singer's wit and the material of life as a neat impression.
Their first concert with this highly popular album releases their best masterpiece album in 1988.
Although released under the names of Poets and Village Heads, but similar to Haduk-gyu's solo album, Hadukgyu buried his view of the world in fine words and fragments of unknown language. And he is breathing his hardships into the future and the origin of the ideal which is represented by a “good country”. The song "Forest," which seeks to see greater truths, it is by far the biggest highlight of the album and a collection of his values. This album is still one of the finest fruits he has ever welcomed in the market, which he has presented as a pop musician.
After a second concert, Ha Duck-gyu went to the CCM series while taking care of the program at CBS. Starting with his first Gospel album, he preached only his religious voice through several album releases and camps until he rejoined with Ham Chun-ho.
It is not until 2000 that Hadeok-gyu and Ham Chun-ho get together again after 14 years of their release.
All songs and lyrics, were written by Ha Duck-kyu, and the best guitar session man Ham Chun-ho, who brilliantly embodied the 1990s, has arranged arrangements, acoustics, electric guitars and E-Bows.
Basically, the three albums that followed the lyricity and folk tendency were accompanied by various genre experiments, but it was not a good present for those who have longed for the renaissance of the 1980s, which is too far away. It was just such an album for the younger generation. But their efforts to bridge the gap with popular music should continue. One day there will be a point where their musicality and popularity meet. Of course, they are doing their part even if they just show good music. Now is the time for us to have a lot of artisans who insist on their own world of music."
