Tracks with * I consider essential listens or classics from a western point of view of listening, as tracks to check out for sure because they seem to stand out as such. This makes them also very suitable for western radio show airplay. Tracks that are only underlined can be considered fine tracks you might better check out as well, but I am not sure how essential they really are.

Won Jae Lee’s voice and singing, with guitar picking can be slightly and only to a degree compared, as a new Korean folk/singer-songwriter, to Kim Doo Soo, with moments of the same seriousness and deep breathing inner calmness, often there’s also a lighter, pleasant note involved, the songs are just a bit more sing song. Perhaps the inspirations might be rooted in something a bit more basic or involved with family feeling based social relations.


The first track, like the second and also the third track, has additional arrangements of clarinet and a few accents of a second guitar and some mouth harmonica led passage(s).


On the second song you also can hear a very small element of a blues drive in the song. Also on the third track, in the picking and hand shakers rhythms, there might be something of a blues rhythm underneath here too, the clarinet and the song singing are more swinging taking it into something more happy. Also on the fourth track, with small contributions by a female singer, and with reindeer bells, hangs a blues accent into the song line movement, the song is like an invitation to sing along with nostalgic feeling during the song drive line.


More mouth harmonica you can hear the fifth track, and also on the 6th track is some moody harmonica, the guitar and the singer’s deep breathy voice remains dominant.

The 7th track (acoustic picking and tambourine and voice) is a real blues song this time revealing this blues interest more directly for the first time. It is sung a bit higher at first too (by a different and second singer ?).

The ninth track has a simple moody flute tune to some minor key picking before another song appears.


Like some of the previous songs and some of the tracks hereafter this is, by hearing the mood, tune, voice and pickings directly only, without understanding the words, it remains a bit unclear what it is about. And in that way with some of the repetitive elements this unclearness annoys me just a little for a full length album.


The tenth track reveals a happy blues inspiration again (picking and voice only), before one of these other comparable songs like before, accompanied by picking and some harmonica.


The last track has a simple, cute melody, almost like a children song, with two picking guitars.

[추억의 LP 여행] 이원재(下) 음악적 시련과 좌절딛고 가스펠 가수로 새인생

대학로 '파랑새'극장 개관에 맞춘 들국화의 창단 공연에 참여를 할 즈음 이원재는 중요한 음악적 계기를 맞이했다. 중학 시절부터 음악 우상이었던 이주원과 만났다. 가슴이 뛰었다. 그는 '따로 또 같이'의 3, 4집 앨범과 콘서트 세션으로 함께 음악을 했던 순간을 지금도 잊지 못한다.

이때가 1987년 초. 이주원은 음악 스승이었다. 어떤 마음 자세로 곡을 써야 되는지 알려 준, 그의 음악적 조언은 이원재를 포크의 세계로 인도하는 징검다리가 되었다.

"중학교 2학년 때 김민기의 노래를 접하면서 처음으로 쇼크를 받았다. 두 번째는 조동진과의 만남이었고 이주원을 만나면서 처음으로 무슨 음악을 해야 하는가를 고민하게 되었다." 클래식과 대중 음악 사이에서 선택의 갈등을 느끼며 그는 자신의 음악을 하고픈 갈증을 느꼈다. 그래서 87년 데모 테이프를 들고 서라벌레코드로 찾아갔다.

동아기획 김영 사장은 당시 유재하(작고)와 이원재 두 신인 가운데 한 명의 음악을 선택해야 했다. 유재하를 젖히고 자신의 음악이 선택되자 가슴이 두근거렸지만 주변의 시샘 때문에 치명적인 마음의 상처를 입혔다. 유일하게 그의 편을 들어준 사람은 전인권과 이주원. 외골수인 그는 자신을 시기하는 분위기에 심한 화병을 앓으며 쓰러졌다. 병원에서도 회복 불능 진단이 내려질 만큼 삶의 의욕을 잃어갔다. 그는 선뜻 기타를 빌려준 전인권의 도움으로 어렵게 1집 녹음을 마쳤다.

당시는 민주화 항쟁으로 온 세상이 어두웠던 시절. 우중충한 분위기의 재킷 그림은 그가 느낀 '우리나라 하늘 색깔'을 후배가 그려 준 것이었다. 데뷔 음반은 제법 반응이 좋았다.

하지만 병마에 시달리며 발표한 지라 본인은 음악적인 아쉬움을 가지고 있다. 2년 후인 89년, 포크 록 적인 분위기의 2집을 발표했다. 1집 보다 반응은 더 좋았지만, 본인은 "목소리 톤도 그렇고, 못마땅한 음반"이라고 털어 놓는다. 주변 사람들의 참견으로 너무 대중적으로 간 2집은 사실 본인이 아닌 다른 가수들을 염두에 두고 만든 곡들이었다. 2집 녹음 때는 이원재는 76kg의 체중이 54kg로 떨어질 만큼 건강이 악화되었다.

2집 발표 후 사람을 만나기 싫어지면서 음악도 싫어져 기타도 팔아 버렸다. 그리곤 후배의 카페에서 2년 간 DJ생활을 하며 틀어 박혔다. 신촌의 카페 우드스탁에서는 "이원재가 죽었다"는 루머까지 나돌았다. 방황의 시기에 당시 홍대 미대생이었던 아내 이은애를 만났다. 아내의 사랑은 창작을 샘을 다시 솟아 오르게 한 한줄기 빛이었다.

때마침 서라벌레코드에서 3집 음반 제작 섭외가 들어왔다. 문제의 3집 '하늘과 바보'. 힘든 세월 속에 자신의 솔직한 넋두리를 담았다. 하지만 '가사 내용이 너무 선동적'이라는 이유로 '푸른 하늘'이 검열에 걸렸다. 정부측의 시선을 무시해 버린 것이 화근이었다. 판매 금지 처분이 내려지고 음반은 전량 수거되었다.

마스터 음원도 빚쟁이들에 의해 분실되었다. 크레용으로 동심 세계를 그려 재킷 제작에 도움을 준 아내의 정성에도 불구, 녹음 기간 중 부인이 유화 작업 중 실수로 3도 화상을 당하는 불운을 겪기까지 했다. 3집은 또 다시 좌절만 안겨주었다.

이후 화상으로 인해 기타를 칠 수 없게 되자 견딜 수 없는 시련에 무너졌다. 일어나기만 하면 구토를 해 걷지도 못하는 암흑의 시절이었다. "전공도 내팽개치고 옷 장사 등으로 생계를 책임져야 했던 아내의 고생은 극심했다."고 털어놓는 그의 눈가엔 이슬이 맺혔다.

94년 여름 어느 날, 후배인 고 김광석이 집으로 불쑥 찾아왔다. 김광석은 자신의 세실극장 공연에 이원재를 게스트로 세웠다. 러닝 셔츠에 슬리퍼 그리고 3일간 세수도 하지 않은 몰골로 꽉 찬 관중 앞에서 선 그는 김광석의 소개로 창작곡 '칡'을 불렀다. 다시 음악을 하게 된 된 계기가 된 가슴 뭉클한 순간이었다.

두 사람은 노찾사 시절의 김광석 때부터 서로의 고민을 털어 놓던 사이였다. 김광석은 유난히 이원재의 '칡'을 좋아했다. '칡'은 군악대 시절, 월동 준비를 위해 싸리비를 준비하러 산골 마을로 갔을 때 부모의 버림을 받고 할아버지와 외롭게 살고 있던 8살 어린 아이의 슬픔을 동요처럼 만들어 본 곡이었다.

게스트를 쓰지 않는 가수로 유명했던 김광석은 이원재 만은 강제로 게스트로 올렸다. 그는 재기를 도와준 은인이었다. 김광석의 주선으로 프로젝트 팀인 '두 바퀴로 가는 자동차'를 결성했다. 하지만 녹음때는 노찾사 1기 조경옥 만이 남아 '뜬 눈'을 불렀고 나머지 노래는 이원재가 다 불러야 했다. 사실상 4집이라 할만한 96년에 나온 '두 바퀴로 가는 자동차' 1집 CD다. 양병집이 70년대에 번안했던 '역'을 이원재는 어린이와 함께 불러 주목을 끌었다.

99년 친하게 지내던 시완레코드의 성시완씨가 4집 '인생'을 발매해 주었다. 이후 종교를 가지게 된 그는 그의 음악을 좋아하는 교인들을 위해 기타로 교회 성가대 반주를 하고 있다. 밝은 마음을 갖자 건강도 회복되기 시작했다.

2001년 어느 날 교회 교지에 수록된 '당신을 향한 예수님의 편지'라는 장문의 글이 한눈에 들어왔다. 정신을 잃을 정도로 가슴을 친 작자 미상의 글은 곧바로 6곡으로 만들어졌다. "좋은 곡은 의도적인 것보다는 이렇게 갑자기 내려온다"는 생각이 들자 새로운 창작의 세계가 보였다.

"전인권은 타고난 록커가 아니라, 멸시받는 환경을 딛고 노력해 올라선 예술가다. 나는 그의 정신을 본받으려 한다." 그는 요즘 일반 대중도 편하게 들을 수 있는 가스펠 포크에 전념하고 있다. 2004년 말께는 8년 만에 그의 신보를 만나게 될 것 같다.

[LP Tour of Memories] Lee Won Jae : Musical trials and frustrations


When Lee participated in the founding performance of Wild Chrysanthemum in line with the opening of the Blue Bird Theater in Daehak-ro, Lee Won-jae met an important musical moment. I have met with Lee Joo-won, who was an idol of music since middle school. I felt My heart beat. I can't forget the moment when he played music with his 3rd and 4th album and concert session together.


This was the beginning of 1987. A migrant was a music teacher. His musical advice, which taught him what kind of attitude to write, became a stepping stone to lead Lee into the world of folk.


"I was shocked for the first time as I heard Kim Min-ki's song when I was in the second year of middle school. Feeling the conflict of choice between classical and popular music, he was thirsty for his music. So in 1987 he recorded a demo tape and gave it a try.


Dong-A Kim, president of Kim Young-ha, had to choose music from two new men, Yoo Jae-ha and Lee Won-jae. Yoo Jae-ha's heart was pounding when her music was selected, but the surrounding glands caused a fatal wound. The only person who took his side was the whole human rights and the migrants. An exoskeleton, he fell into a severe vase with envy. In the hospital, he lost his motivation to be diagnosed with irreparability. He finished his first hard recording with the help of the whole person who lent the guitar.


At that time, the whole world was dark due to the democratic protest. The ugly atmosphere of the jacket was the junior's drawing of the color of our country's sky. The debut record was quite good.


However, he had been suffering from illness and having a musical disappointment. Two years later, in 1989, he released his second folk-style LP. It responded better than Vol. 1, but I confess that "I don't like the tone of the voice, I don't like the record." The second album, which was so popular due to the crowds of people around me, was actually made with other artists in mind. During his second recording, Lee Won-jae deteriorated his health as 76kg weight dropped to 54kg.


After the release of the second album, he didn't want to meet people, he took a distance from music, and sold his guitars. Then he was stuck in a junior cafe for two years as a DJ. Shinchon's cafe Woodstock even rumored that "Lee Won Jae is dead." At the time of wandering, he met Lee Eun-ae, a wife of the University of Hongdae at the time. His wife's love was a light that made him spring up again.


At the same time, the 3rd album production subscription came in from Sorraworm Code. Vol. 3 in question 'Sky and Fool'. In his difficult years, he filled his frank complaining. However, the blue sky was censored because the lyrics were too inflammatory. It was Hwa-eun who ignored the government's attention. The sale was forbidden and all the records were collected.


The master sound was also lost by the debtors. In spite of her wife's devotion to drawing a concentric world with crayons, she even suffered the misfortune of accidentally losing her third degree during the oil painting. The third LP left him again frustrated.


Later, when burns made him unable to play the guitar, he fell into unbearable trials. Once you wake up, it was a dark time to vomit. "My wife's hard work, which was throwing away his major and making a living by selling clothes, was severe," he said.


One summer day, the late junior Kim Gwang-seok suddenly came home. Kim Kwang-suk set up Lee Won-jae as a guest for his performance at Cecil Theater. In front of a crowd full of running shirts, slippers and three-day washouts, he sang the original song '칡' with Kim Kwang-seok's introduction. It was a heartbreaking moment that brought me back to music.


The two had been confronting each other's concerns since Kim Gwang-seok's days. Kim Kwang-suk was exceptionally fond of Lee's '칡'. '칡' was a song that made the sadness of an 8-year-old child who lived alone with his grandfather after being abandoned by his parents when he went to a mountain village to prepare for sabibi during the military band.


Kim Kwang-suk, who was famous as a singer without a guest, forced Lee Won-jae to be a guest. He was a benefactor who helped recover. Kim Kwang-suk organized the project team 'Two-wheeled car'. However, during the recording, only No. 1 Cho Kyung-ok left, singing the 'open eyes' and Lee Won-jae had to sing the rest of the song. It is actually the first CD of 'Two-wheeled Car' from 1996, which is considered to be four. Lee Won-jae drew a spotlight with the children, calling the 'station' that Yang Byung-ho revised in the 70s.


Seong-Wan Sung of SIWAN RECORDS, who had been close in 1999, released the 4th album 'Life'. Later in religion, he performed a church choir accompaniment with a guitar for his music-loving members. With a bright heart, his health began to recover.


One day in 2001, a long article was written in the Church's doctrine: "The Letter of Jesus to You". The writings of the unknown author, whose heart was so heartbroken, were soon made into six pieces. The thought of "good songs come down so suddenly rather than intentionally" gave him a new world of creation.


"The whole human right is not a natural rocker, but an artist who has tried to overcome the despised environment. I try to imitate his spirit." He is now devoted to the Gospel folk, which is now easily heard by the general public. By the end of 2004, he is likely to meet his new report in eight years.

CONCLUSION:

This is an honest introvert singer/songwriter finding an expression and voice of his own, with a form of inner blues. The simplicity in it should give some caution to foreigners who ca't pick up the lyrics. THere's some charm in it but without lyrical link the musical foundation still lies a bit thin.
