남상규 / Nam Sang-Kyu (Sang-Gyu)

This album I suppose is a compilation of the song performances of Nam Sang Kyu. The song style is modernized Pop/rock/Trot, so mostly this is mainstream pop song music with recognizable melodies, never really making itself too different from popular music. There’s a full orchestration with strings and sax and all and a small rock band. It is rather tasteful studio entertainment, but at the same time this means there is not much to really stand out of this setting. Still, the last three tracks for me might be the best to lift out. “Train Springtime of Life” for sure is different, with a funky electric guitar/electric piano to the strings mixed with the Trot style, which still is in fact slightly surprising to hear. The last track has a more melodic melody and a more older time band arrangement.

The voice of the singer is an enjoyable warm baritone, the melodies are trot-based or popular music.

I have checked around 24 extra numbers outside this collection, of which most other are gentle trot styled or somewhat remaining in that area. A few exceptional tracks, especially for musical and style reasons mostly are 그리운 사진 / Nostalgic pictures -tango?-, 브라질 이민선 / Brazilian immigrant, 슈거룸바 / Sugar Rumba and 하양마 후라의 여인 / Hanamar Fura Woman -twist/jazz influence-

I have noticed that the most recent recordings are even more commercial and mainstream than ever before. Avoid these especially!

남상규 - 고향의 강 내 가슴에 남은 가요 / 치유의 정원

60, 70년대를 가로지른 정서 중의 하나는 고향이었습니다.

급격한 산업화와 농촌의 피폐 속에서 많은 젊은이가 서울로, 공장으로 들어갔습니다. 먹고 살기 위해 할 수 없이 떠났습니다.

그리고 명절만 되면 누구나 없이 손에 손에 선물을 들고 고향을 찾았습니다.

많은 사람들에게 눈 감으면 고향이고 눈 뜨면 타향이었습니다.

이 노래도 그런 노래 중의 하나입니다(1971년 발표).

그런데 이 노래는 다른 노래들처럼 고향을 그리고 고향에 두고온 사람과 떠난 사람을 그리워 하지만 너무 경쾌합니다.

안타까운 고향의 노래가 한껏 신이 나서 굴러가는 반주처럼, 부드럽다 못해 능글맞기까지 한 남상규의 목소리와 함께 경쾌하게 흘러갑니다.

정처없이 타향을 떠도는 몸

봄에 떠난 그리운 이는 가을이 와도 돌아올 기미도 없습니다.

그래도 나는 오늘을 살아갑니다.

저 경쾌한 노래처럼, 저 부드러운 목소리처럼 고향이 아닌 이곳에서 살아갑니다.

내가 사는 여기는 고향이 아닌지도 모릅니다.

아니 내가 사는 여기가 고향인지도 모릅니다.

분명한 것은 이제 아무도 고향을 찾지 않는다는 것입니다.

그러나 내 가슴 속에는 고향의 강가에 흐드러지게 피어 있는 갈대가 흐느끼고 있습니다.

River left in my heart / Healing garden

One of the emotions that passed through the 60's and 70's was a place like home. In the midst of rapid industrialization and rural poverty, many young people entered Seoul and its factories. Everybody went home with a gift in their hands. For many people, when they close their eyes, they are home. This song is about this feeling towards home (announced in 1971). This song, like other songs, is about missing one's hometown and about people who have left home, but it is still cheerful. The song of the sad hometown flows cheerfully with the voice of Nam Sang-kyu, who is soft and smirk like an accompaniment that is excited and rolling.

A wandering body

Nostalgia left in spring, no sign of coming back.

Still I am alive today.

Like that cheerful song, like that soft voice,

I live here not in my hometown.

where I live might not be home.

maybe I just live here.

What is clear is that nobody is now looking for a home.

But in my heart, there is a weeping reed that blooms in the river of my hometown.
