이종용 - Lee Jong-Yong (Twin Folio)
Lee Yong-Jong, who once cooperated with Twin Folio, also made some solo song records. This well-hanging together compilation shows that solo period. The choice of songs tend to chose a bit more often predictable chords and melodies, save songs and perhaps even Christian idealisations of inspirations. Often there’s use of synth arrangements with acoustic guitar. Elsewhere there are strings and entertainment pop/rock arrangements. You can still hear there’s an original songwriter at work. A few songs reveal the folk song past, even though te main tendency adds a bit more entertaining elements, and a few more progressive pop/rock additions (electric guitar).

Tracks with * I consider essential listens or classics, or tracks to check out for sure. It are tracks that makes them also very suitable for western radioshow airplay. Tracks that are only underlined can be considered fine tracks you might better check out as well, but I am not sure how essential they are.
On a double CD compilation the worse qualities starts to become more visible over the available qualities. For such a length of listen, it is the limited range of possibilities of expression being used that becomes predictable and dominating. We already heard and were sometimes annoyed by predictable melancholy and cradle-like mellow melodies even though the singer’s voice sound inspired. The range is from folk to more fully arranged mainstream pop and pop/rock. The potential is there, but in that way, in those times and days, it isn’t always coming out at its best. I am sure the music would sound and be consumed more thoroughly if we could understand the lyrics.

[짬] 1981년 인기절정에서 떠난 가수 이종용, LA에서 23년째 목회
뮤지컬 <지저스 크라이스트 슈퍼스타> 공연 끝내자마자 은퇴
그를 만나기 위해 지난 18일(현지시각) 미국 로스앤젤레스 토런스로 향하는 차 안, ‘지금도 그를 기억하는 사람이 얼마나 될까?’라는 생각이 문득 들었다.
다만 그를 알지 못해도 겨울이 생일인 사람들은 종종 청아한 하이톤의 ‘겨울아이’라는 축하 노래를 몇 번은 들어봤을 법하다. ‘이종용’(사진)을 짧게 설명하자면, 1975년 데뷔곡 ‘너’로 단숨에 가요계 정상에 올라 가요순위 프로그램 8개월 연속 1위를 차지하고, 그해 가요 시상식에서 1등상을 받기로 돼 있었는데, 시상식 당일 연예인 대마초 사건으로 신중현, 이장희, 윤형주, 김추자 등과 함께 긴급체포돼 구속됐다. 그때 이종용은 ‘대마초를 피우지 않았다’고 항변했지만 26살 스타는 그렇게 스러지는 것 같았다. 4년이 지나 1980년 ‘난 참 바보처럼 살았군요’, ‘겨울아이’ 등을 발표하며 복귀했다. 그리고 뮤지컬 <지저스 크라이스트 슈퍼스타>에서 ‘예수’ 역을 맡는 등 다시 제2의 전성기를 누리던 그때, 그는 갑자기 모든 걸 버리고 미국으로 떠났다. 로스앤젤레스에서 성공적인 목회를 하고 있다는 이야기가 종종 들리곤 했다.
마주앉고 보니, 후덕하고 넉넉한 모습에서 오래전 앨범에서 본 70~80년대 장발 통기타 가수의 모습을 찾아내긴 힘들었다. 그런데 고개를 숙이고 목소리만 들으면 명확한 발음과 맑고 높은 톤의 턴테이블에 남아 있던 그 목소리 그대로다. 수십번 반복했을 이야기를 물었다. ‘그때 왜 떠났느냐?’고.
“79년부터 81년 12월까지 뮤지컬 <지저스 크라이스트 슈퍼스타> 249회 공연을 마쳤습니다. 당시 빌라도 역은 유인촌(박상원), 막달라 마리아는 윤복희, 헤롯은 곽규석, 유다는 추송웅 김도향, 예수는 저였죠. 뮤지컬이란 개념도 분명하지 않던 시절, 가수·코미디언·연극배우·탤런트 등 모두 당대 최고의 인물들로 배역을 채웠습니다. 하루 2회 공연에 2회 연습, 똑같은 대사와 노래를 수없이 반복했습니다. 그런데도, 배역에 몰입이 안 되는 겁니다. 신인 예수를 연기하니, 인간인 제가 그 마음을 도저히 알 수 없는 것 아니겠습니까? (예수의 생애를 기록한) 4복음서를 수없이 읽고, 산상수훈-배신-재판-고문-승천 등의 순간순간마다 ‘그때 심정이 어떠했을까’를 온종일 생각하며 그 마음에 다가가려 애를 썼던 거죠. 그러다 보니, 저도 모르게 삶의 가치관이 달라지고 만 거죠.”
그는 말을 이었다.
“20대에 기사 딸린 고급차에 보디가드에 매니저에, 누구나 다 날 좋아해 주고, 그러니 남이 나를 사랑하는 걸 당연하게 여겼었죠. 그런데 뮤지컬에서 예수 흉내를 제대로 내보기 위해 예수를 알아가다 나와는 정반대로 남에게 모든 걸 다 내주는 그 마음에 닿은 것이지요.”
그는 예정된 뮤지컬 공연이 막을 내리자, 보름 뒤 미국 텍사스주 샌안토니오로 신학 공부를 위해 떠난다. 난리가 났다. <지저스 크라이스트 슈퍼스타>는 한국 뮤지컬 사상 최초의 흑자 공연이었다. 앵콜 순회공연, 새 음반, 텔레비전 쇼프로그램 등 앞으로 계획된 일이 줄을 서 있었다.
샌안토니오에는 당시 군사언어학교가 있었고, 한국의 장교들이 줄줄이 9주간 교육을 받고 돌아가곤 했는데, 그 수가 연간 1200명에 이르렀다. 거기서 그는 이들을 차로 데려다주고, 한국 음식 대접하고, 그리고 9주 뒤에 떠나보냈다. 한국에서 대접만 받던 인기 절정 가수가 미국에서 그런 일을 했다.
8년 반을 그렇게 보내고, 93년 로스앤젤레스로 왔다. 한국으로 돌아가기 위해 잠시 머물렀는데, 그대로 주저앉았다. 청년 8명과 거실에서 시작한 교회가 지금은 지역사회의 중심으로 굳건히 자리잡았다.
인생 스토리를 끝낸 뒤, 이런 질문을 던졌다. “한국에서 기독교는 언젠가부터 비난의 대상이 될 때가 많습니다.”
“네. 압니다. 교회가 세상의 빛과 소금의 역할을 해야 하는데, 대형 교회 들어서면 주일마다 교통 막히지, 새벽마다 기도회 한다고 시끄럽지, 가끔 대형 교회 목사들이 엉뚱한 소리 하지, 세상엔 관심도 없고 ‘우리만 구원받고 복 받고 잘 살자’는 것처럼 보이지, 누가 좋아하겠습니까? 한국의 성장 신화가 교회 안에도 그대로 들어와 교인 수로 목회의 성패 여부를 보는 잘못된 믿음관 때문인 듯합니다. 교회 성장학 세미나에 가면, 인구가 늘고 중산층 이상이 사는 곳에 교회를 세울 것을 권합니다. 디도서를 보면, 바울이 크레타 섬에 교회를 세우고 제자 디도를 남겨두는데, 당시 크레타는 거짓말쟁이에 타락한 곳의 대명사였습니다. 교회가 필요한 곳에 교회를 세워야지, 돈 많고 신실한 신자 많은 곳에 교회가 필요한 게 아니지요. 그리고 한국 교회는 교회-가정-세상이란 균형점이 깨진 듯 보입니다. 오직 교회만 강조한 게 이렇게 대가를 치르는 겁니다. (교회뿐 아니라) 세상에서 진실된 크리스천이 되어야겠지요.”
인터뷰 뒤, 인사치레로 물었다. “건강은 어떠세요?”라고. “3년 전 전립선암 선고받고 ‘1년 반밖에 못 산다’ 했는데 여지껏 큰 탈 없으니 감사하지요”라 한다. 암은 현재 더이상 진행은 안 되고 있지만, 완치되진 않았다.

“We finished 249 musical performances of <Jesus Christ Superstar> from 1984 to December 1981. At that time, Pilate was Yu Inchon (Park Sang-won), Mary Magdalene was Yun Bok-hee, Herodes was Kwak Kyu-seok, Judas was Choo Song-woong, and Jesus was me. In the days when the concept of musical was not clear, singers, comedians, theatrical actors, and talents were all filled with the best characters of the time. I practiced twice a performance twice a day, repeating the same lines and songs many times. Still, I can't immerse myself in the role. Isn't it possible for me, human beings, to know my heart when I play the god Jesus? After reading the four Gospels (recording Jesus' life) numerous times, every moment of the Sermon on the Mount, Betrayal, Trial, Torture, and Ascension, I tried to reach my heart all day thinking about what it was like. As a result, my values have changed. ”
“In my 20s, I had a luxury car, a bodyguard, a manager, everyone loved me, so I took it for granted that others loved me. However, in order to imitate Jesus in a musical, I came to know Jesus and came to the heart of giving everything to the opposite of me. ”
When the scheduled musical show ends, he left for San Antonio, Texas, USA, to study theology. I was upset. Jesus Christ Superstar was the first surplus performance in Korean musical history. The planned work was in line with the encore tour, new recordings and television shows.
San Antonio had a military language school at the time, and Korean officers used to be trained and returned for nine weeks, reaching 1200 students per year. There he drove them, served Korean food, and left after nine weeks. A popular peak singer who was treated only in Korea now did it in the United States.
I spent eight and a half years and came to Los Angeles in 1993. I stayed for a while to return to Korea, but I sat down. The church, which began in the living room with eight young men, is now firmly established as the center of the community.
After the life story, I asked myself this question. “Christianity in Korea is often the point of blame someday.” "Yeah. I know. The church should act as the light and salt of the world, but when we enter a large church, we get stuck in traffic every Sunday, and every morning, prayers are noisy. It seems, who would like it? It seems that the growth myth of Korea is still in church, and it is because of the false belief that sees the success of pastoral ministry as a member of the congregation. At church growth seminars, we encourage you to establish a church where the population grows and where the middle class lives. After the interview, I asked him "How's your health?" "Three years ago I had prostate cancer and I would only live for a year and a half," he says. Cancer is not progressing anymore, but it has not been cured.

이 노래는 1970년대 최고 인기 가수 이종용이 불러준 추억의 히트 가요.
수지 덕분에 원곡자인 이종용의 근황이 궁금증을 불러 일으키고 있는데 그는 현재 미국에서 목회자로 활동하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

120일 동안의 구치소 수감 생활을 끝내고 나온 그에게 기다린 것은 4년 동안의 연예 활동 금지 명령.

인생의 가장 낮은 순간을 경험했다는 4년을 보내고 그가 복귀작으로 선택한 것이 바로 뮤지컬 <지저스 크라이스트 슈퍼스타>의 예수역이었다.
<라이온 킹> 등 월트 디즈니 음악 애니메이션으로 성과를 드높이고 있는 팀 라이스 작사, <에비타> <캣츠> <오페라의 유령> 등으로 훗날 뮤지컬 흥행계의 마이다스로 칭송 받은 앤드류 로이드 웨버가 작곡을 맡은 <지저스 크라이스트 슈퍼스타 Jesus Christ Superstar>는 성서를 소재로 해서 예수의 마지막 7일간을 강열한 록 음악을 가미 시켜 선보인 혁신적인 작품.
1971년 브로드웨이에서 초연된 이후 1973년에는 노만 주이슨 감독이 대형 극영화로 공개되는 등 전세계적인 호응을 얻는다.
청년 그리스도와 그를 존경하는 유다 그리고 이들 사이에 나타나서 그리스도의 마음을 사로잡는 마리아 막달레나가 펼쳐·주는 스토리는 23살의 베버와 27살 열혈 청년 팀 라이스의 패기가 농축된 명작으로 칭송을 얻어낸다.
귀청이 찢어질 듯 고성으로 노래를 불러 주는 예수역은 록 그룹 딥 퍼플의 이언 길런이 맡아 서구 예술계로 연일 음악계 핫 뉴스를 제공한다.

반면 우유부단한 예수와 성적 매력과 연민을 불러 일으키는 인물로 유다를 묘사하는 동시에 예수를 수퍼스타로 호칭하고 퇴폐적이고 반사회적인 록 음악으로 예수를 언급한다는 것은 신성모독이라며 기독교인들의 공연 금지 시위가 벌어졌지만 파격적 소재에 공감하는 젊은이들의 열기로 극장은 연일 만원 사례를 거듭하게 된다.
해외 탑 뉴스를 제공하고 있는 뮤지컬은 1979년 한국에서도 초연돼 예수 주인공을 연예 활동 족쇄에서 풀려난 이종용이 맡게 된 것.
이 공연은 윤복희, 유인촌, 추송웅 등이 연이어 출연하면서 2년 동안 250회 이상 장기 공연되는 성원을 받아낸다.
<지저스 크라이스트 슈퍼스타> 출연을 계기로 신심을 얻게 된 이종용은 1982년 목사가 되기 위해 미국으로 건너갔고 1985년 토니오 한인 남부침례교회를 거쳐 93년 LA 근교 코너스톤 교회를 개소해 오늘에 이르고 있다는 것.
그의 근황은 미주 중앙일보에서 최근 LA 세리토스 퍼포밍아트 센터에서 코너스톤 교회 발족 20주년 기념 행사가 진행됐다는 교계 소식을 보도하면서 알려졌다.
이날 행사에서는 흑인 가수 스티비 원더의 음악 세션팀으로 활동했던 색소폰 연주자 론 브라운 등이 무대가 진행됐지만 가장 하이라이트는 이종용의 신앙 간증 시간.
코너스톤 교회를 개척하던 시기의 어려웠던 점과 한국에서 온 가수 출신 목사가 설립한 교회에 대한 세간의 궁금증이 목회 활동에 도움이 되기보다는 걸림돌이 됐다는 점 등을 솔직하게 고백해 참석 교인들의 뜨거운 공감을 받았다는 소식이다.

The overall mellowness of the music makes this singer-songwriter less collectable to Western collectors. It is worth discovering and easy to appreciate some tracks but I am afraid full albums for people who won't understand any of the lyrics won't work easily.
