일제강점기 35년 동안 제작 발매된 가요곡은 모두 몇 편이나 될까요? 여기에 대해 정확한 통계를 낸 자료는 없습니다만 당시 음반 제작사에서 발매했던 일련번호를 통해 거칠게 집계해보면 대략 6천500장 가량 제작되었습니다. 이 가운데 국악음반이 3천200장 내외로 절반을 차지하고, 나머지 절반 중 가요곡이 2천300장 안팎으로 또 절반을 차지합니다. 레코드 회사마다 이름이 다르고 갈래도 번잡하게 느껴지지만 대체로 비슷합니다. 수량으로는 SP, 즉 축음기 음반 한 장에 앞뒤로 불과 두 곡밖에 수록되지 않으므로 전체 가요곡은 음반수의 갑절인 4천600곡 정도로 추산됩니다.

오늘 우리가 다루고자 하는 일제강점기 말의 가수 강남주(姜南舟 1914∼1976)의 경우만 하더라도 이제는 사람들의 기억에서 완전히 사라진 가수 중 한 사람입니다. 하지만 그는 1939년 5월 콜럼비아 레코드 전속이 되면서 발표한 데뷔곡 ‘울고 싶은 마음’ 한 곡으로 험한 세월에 마음을 안정시키지 못하고 헤매던 당시 식민지 백성들의 비통한 마음을 쓰다듬고 위로해준 가수였습니다. 말하자면 대중문화인에게 맡겨진 시대적 사명을 그 나름대로 감당했던 가수였지요.
