열기들 - Fevers
LP review: This soft-rock album features electric guitars, drums and organ, vocals with some vocal harmonies. Some of the tracks are more mellow. B2 is a funkier track mixed with psychpop. There’s one longer track with good fuzz guitar. When I first heard the (VG-/G) LP my impression was that most of the album for western listeners seemed to be somewhat forgettable. The album is not so rare.

Tracks with * I consider essential listens or classics, or tracks to check out for sure because for some reason they seem to stand out as unique moments, which makes them also very suitable for western radioshow airplay. Tracks that are only underlined can be considered fine tracks you might better check out as well, but I am not sure how essential they are.
CD review: I know more often collectors obsessively collect “the original” or first pressing, in reality the music sometimes is better to appreciate with a remastered edition, even a CD edition. In case of Fevers, I knew I had to give the album a second try after my first rough listen of the original LP, so the CD edition was only perfect for that.
Most of the album is rather enjoyable pop/rock with a touch of a progressive minded rock band (organ solo’s, funky elements in some of the organ/guitars, and just a bit of fuzz). In a light way this is pretty enjoyable and joyful.
The first three tracks in that way start well in a soft, slightly progressive-minded but still straight-forward rock approach (electric guitars, drums and bass and organ), as one up-tempo song, one mellow track and, my favourite of all three, the third track with an organ harmony chords intro, an electric guitar led theme, a catchy melody with vocal harmonies, followed by a still good light pop/rock track with harmony vocals. The track after that is more mellow pop with easy accompaniment. Strangely enough a local marching brass band theme is followed after this, before returning to the pop/rock mode. Harmony vocals to the lead vocals are added and organ rhythms and rather easy band arrangements. The track after that is with rather funky effects on the different guitars and organ, still is pop/rock styled. The ninth track adds more fuzz guitar and a longer fuzz solo with organ chords and a good driving bass/rhythm, or another more progressively evolving track, only to be followed by a lighter rhythms/pop/rock track and a rather light pop/track with wah-wah effects on organ.
The album has interesting elements and if you don’t expect too much progression, it is I must say nice to listen to.

CONCLUSION:
Fevers are a fine soft psych rock / soft rock band in a late 60s/early 70s western style. The album is rewarding enough to check out.

TBC가 1978년에 제 1회 해변가요제를 연포해변에서 열었던 것은 우연한 일이 아니다. 이미 1973년 8월에 연포해수욕장 개장기념으로 전국보컬그룹경연대회를 개최한 경험이 있었기 때문이다. TBC가 통폐합된 1981년에도 KBS 라디오 주최한 연포가요제 사랑의 듀엣 쇼에서 배따라기, 혁과 준, 김범룡 등이 발굴되었다. 70-80년대 여름에 해변과 강변으로 휴가를 떠나 놀아본 경험이 있다면 노래에 대한 잊지 못할 추억 하나 쯤은 간직하고 있을 것이다. 해변가요제와 강변가요제가 배출한 무수한 여름시즌 명곡들이 빚어낸 마술 같은 현상이다. 동양방송이 1978년 7월22일에 서해안 연포해수욕장에서 개최한 제 1회 연포해변가요제는 1977년 제 1회 MBC 대학가요제의 성공에 대응하기 위해 생겨난 여름음악축제였다. 황인용 아나운서가 진행을 맡았던 연포해변가요제는 MBC 대학가요제와는 달리 만 18세 이상의 대학생 및 고교 졸업이상의 학력을 지닌 성인 남녀는 누구나 참가할 수 있는 문호가 넓었던 가요제였다. 이 앨범은 우렁찬 팡파레와 시원한 파도 소리, 갈매기의 효과음 소리와 함께 사회를 맡은 황인용씨의 소개 멘트로 문을 연다. 대회 참가 곡은 대학가요제와 마찬가지로 기성, 창작, 외국 곡까지 가능했다. 첫 트랙을 장식한 한양대 혼성보컬그룹 징검다리가 기성곡 <여름>으로 최우수상을 수상할 수 있었던 이유이다. 사실 <여름>은 4인조 혼성보컬그룹 해바라기가 이미 발표했던 노래였다. 하지만 곡을 작곡한 이정선이 대회 심사위원을 맡아 수상에 대한 비난의 목소리도 있었다. 여하튼 이 대회를 통해 징검다리의 멤버 왕영은은 청춘스타로 급부상하는 계기를 마련했다. 대회 참가자들의 창작곡을 담은 이 음반은 당대 대중들에게 날린 파장은 MBC 대학가요제와 더불어 대학생 가요제 전성시대의 개막을 힘차게 알렸다. 해변가요제가 낳은 명곡은 무수하다. 본선에 올랐던 12팀 가운데 절반에 가까운 다섯 팀이 캠퍼스밴드였다. 구창모가 리드싱어로 참가해 우수상을 받았던 홍익대 밴드 블랙 테트라의 <구름과 나>, 배철수가 리드했던 항공대 밴드 런 웨이(활주로)의 동상 수상곡 <세상 모르고 살았노라>, 5개 대학 연합밴드 장남들의 장려상 수상 곡 <바람과 구름>, 이명훈이 리드했던 휘버스(열기들)의 인기상 수상 곡 <그대로 그렇게>, 장려상을 받은 중앙대 밴드 블루 드래곤(청룡)의 <내 단 하나의 소원> 등은 그 시절 여름시즌을 대표하는 캠퍼스밴드들의 명곡들이다.
