우리의 국토 개념은 일반적으로 분단 이전의 상태, 즉 남북한이 하나로 통합된 상태의 영역을 말합니다. 하지만 그보다 훨씬 이전 상고시대의 우리나라는 백두산을 중심으로 북녘 삼천리, 남녘 삼천리 도합 육천리가 한민족의 강토였다고 합니다.

현재 우리들에게 가장 절실히 필요한 것은 잃어버린 고토에 대한 정서, 즉 북방정서의 회복이 아닐까 합니다. 가요라는 대중문화 쪽에서 북방정서를 적극적으로 담아 열창했던 가수가 있었으니 그는 채규엽, 유종섭, 송달협 등입니다.

우리가 오늘 다루고자 하는 가수 유종섭(劉鍾燮'1916∼?)은 두만강 물소리가 들리는 함경북도 회령에서 유재구의 장남으로 태어났습니다. 부친은 회령지역에서 '창덕상회'라는 이름의 물산위탁업을 대규모로 운영하던 사업가였습니다. 유종섭은 유소년 시절부터 이런 아버지를 따라 두만강 너머 만주와 연해주까지 다녔습니다. 아들이 가업을 이어가기를 바라는 부친의 뜻으로 회령상업학교를 졸업하고 북간도로 건너가서 연길의 금융조합에 취직해서 일했습니다. 그러나 그의 마음속 꿈은 따로 있었으니 그것은 성악가로 이름을 널리 알리는 것이었지요. 회령상업 2학년 재학 중에 항시 성악 연습으로 목청을 다듬었습니다. 후리후리하게 큰 신장에 외모도 서구풍의 미남형으로 준수해서 특별히 멋스러운 귀공자 느낌마저 들었다고 합니다. 유종섭이 가장 존경하고 사모했던 가수는 이탈리아의 전설적인 테너 가수 티토 스키파(Tito Schipa'1889∼1965)였습니다. 그의 깃털처럼 부드럽고 우아한 벨칸토 창법의 목소리를 닮고 싶어 늘 모창으로 기량을 연마했습니다.

유종섭이 가수의 길을 걷게 된 것은 콜럼비아 악극단의 회령 공연 때문입니다. 가수가 되고 싶다며 찾아온 청년 유종섭의 꿈을 알게 된 콜럼비아 직원은 바로 그의 가능성을 테스트했고, 여기서 가능성을 인정받아 서울로 함께 떠나가게 되었습니다.

유종섭의 성음 특징은 티토 스키파를 연상하게 하는 맑고 부드러운 목소리 속에 슬픈 여운이 실안개처럼 감도는 느낌이라 할까요. 한 번 듣고 나면 그 애잔한 울림의 파장이 다시 듣고 싶어지는 효과가 느껴집니다. 유종섭은 드디어 그토록 소망하던 콜럼비아레코드사의 전속가수가 되어서 1936년 5월 여성가수 장옥조(蔣玉祚)와 함께 부른 '아리랑'을 첫 음반으로 선보입니다. 이후 1939년 7월에 취입한 마지막 곡인 '정열의 수평선'까지 약 37곡을 발표합니다. 그러니까 가수로서의 활동기간은 3년 동안에 불과합니다. 한 해에 평균 12곡의 음반을 발표한 셈인데, 유종섭이 불렀던 음반을 살펴보면 상당수가 유랑, 방랑 테마입니다.

유종섭이 가요작품을 발표한 시기는 식민지의 농민들이 유랑의 신세가 되어 가족들과 아무런 대책이 없이 암담한 가슴을 부여안고 압록강, 두만강을 눈물에 젖어 넘어가던 무렵입니다. 유종섭이 부른 노래들은 이러한 당시 현실을 반영하면서 유랑민들의 답답한 가슴과 울분을 쓰다듬고 위로해주는 격려의 메시지를 담고 있었던 것입니다.
