현미 - Hyeon Mi / Hyun Mee
Another voice I picked out to check better after having listened to the Domido label compilation 5 CD-box is Hyeon Mi.
Here it is a bit difficult for me to describe what kind of music or style she sings in. I have the impression there’s a gifted composer behind the music too, holding it ever in between many genres, from crooner/ballroom singing to pop and soulful rock, and of course we have a good voice being able to express with a certain distance a proportionate association of emotion too.
A few tracks start with harp, piano and strings, also the orchestra can have drums and electric guitar or bass leading too. The 8th track has a bossa nova rhythm. The 9th track has a male singer too and overdub arrangement on the lead female voice, again holding in between genres with a certain vision and independency. The 11th track has eastern (Japanese/Korean) melodic accents, here the emotionality in the singing is strongest. The last, also rather eastern sounding song is led by bass, more often features clarinet solos too. Very good!

This is a rather 'romantic'-sounding song arranged with plucked violins and double bass. Hyeon Mi's voice has deep sensual qualities but also is able to sing with passionate accents and variety. A song like this fits perfect to those qualities and in that way obviously succeeds to convinces the listener.

"Lovers" is more rhythmical in a twist-like way (I can't pinpoint these genres well, sorry), with a double bass and subtle background guitar rhythmic drive and improvised electric solos. The song gives enough space for the emotional build ups of Hyeon Mi's voice.

"Wind" is a slow song showing the whole soul range of Hyeon Mi's passionate singing, which receives a bit of subtly added background choir arrangements too. I believe there were not many voices in Korea that were like Hyeon Mi. "The Two Men" has a slowed down tango-like rhythm in its song again, making it a song like a stylish ballroom dance.

현미는 과거 TV조선 '인생다큐 마이웨이'에서 출연해 남편 故 이봉조와의 비화를 털어놨다.
미 8군 부대 아이돌이었던 가수 현미는 1962년 '밤안개'로 화려한 데뷔를 치렀다. 이후 '보고싶은 얼굴', '떠날 때는 말없이' 등 수많은 곡을 히트시키며 가요계의 디바로 자리잡았다.

예명 때문에 현미 홍보대사가 되기도 했다. 현미가 출연한 어느 방송 중 쌀과 관련된 이야기가 나왔는데, 도중에 현미에 관련한 이야기가 나오자 자신이 데뷔할 때는 현미라는 쌀이 없었다고 한다.이후에 현미라는 쌀이 나와서 자신도 놀라면서도 웃겼다고 한다.
