My very first review after listening to (a not to great VG- version of) an LP: "This album is good, somewhat simple, early indie-psych-rock, somewhat comparable to San Ul Rim, but more focused and moody. For a few tracks really enjoyable, but also a with no direct surprises." I will do a new review further on-->

활주로는 대한민국의 록 밴드였다. 배철수가 이끄는 한국항공대학교 출신의 밴드로, 결성 당시 이름은 런웨이(Runway)였다. 1978년 8월 연포 해변에서 열린 제1회 동양방송 해변 가요제에서 '세상 모르고 살았노라'로 인기상을 수상하여 유명해졌다. 같은해 10월 제2회 문화방송 대학가요제에서 '탈춤'으로 은상을 받아 인기를 얻었고, 결국 지구레코드와 계약을 하고 음반을 낸다. 그러나 1979년에 김종태와 박홍일이 학업에 전념하기 위해 활주로를 탈퇴하고 밴드는 해체되었고, 배철수는 밴드를 이어나가기로 하고 송골매를 결성한다

Psychefolk Radio show comments: "I began to appreciate the album better in the CD version as you can see in the choice of tracks" I heard the reissue of this album after I have heard the LP before this. The remastered sound was a real improvement for me.
The album is pretty enjoyable and is a bit influenced by the Shin-Jung Hyun bands but perhaps also San Ul Lim. It is good song based psych-rock with electric guitar, organ harmonies and good drumming. One song is a bit easier going and one track is more up-tempo. The last track is longer and improvises in a somewhat Shin-Yung Hyun way and perhaps is even covering one of his songs.

재미와 의미를 모두 달성한 캠퍼스 그룹의 기념음반
캠퍼스 그룹 사운드에 뿌리를 둔 그룹들에 대해 ‘매스 미디어를 통해 벼락 출세했다’는 일부의 시각이 있다. 그렇지만 그게 이들의 ‘의도’나 ‘전략’이 아닌 한 이런 시각은 절반 이하로만 타당할 뿐이다. 이들이 1970년대 말 방송국 주최 대학생 가요제의 붐을 틈타 독집 앨범까지 발매하게 된 것은 분명 행운이었지만, 그건 ‘학창 시절의 기념 음반’ 이상은 아니었을 것이다. 따라서 이 음반에 붙어 있는 “’78 mbc 대학가요제 입상기념”이라는 부제는 ‘홍보 문구’라기보다는 ‘팩트 그 자체’일 것이다.
이 음반의 주역들인 ‘항공대 기악반 10기’의 라인업은 배철수(드럼, 보컬), 지덕엽(기타), 박홍일(베이스), 김종태(키보드)다. 실제로는 ‘연합 기수’인 셈인데, 이는 재수, 입대, 복학 등의 복잡한 사정 때문일 것이다. 이 가운데 가장 돋보이는 인물은 단연 배철수다. 그의 독특한 캐릭터를 별도로 한다고 해도 드럼으로 전체적 리듬을 조율해 내면서 리드 보컬까지 맡은 인물에게 스포트라이트가 가는 것은 당연하다. 활주로의 후신인 송골매를 곧잘 이글스(The Eagles)에 비유하는 것도 활주로(및 초기 송골매)에서 배철수의 역할이 이글스에서 돈 헨리의 역할 및 이미지와 비슷했다는 점과 무관하지 않았을 것이다. 모든 곡에서 리드 보컬을 맡은 배철수의 노래는 ‘노래를 잘 못한다’는 식의 주류 세계의 평을 무시한다면 한국어가 록 음악의 가사로 부적절하지 않다는 점을 유감없이 보여준다. 한 음절 한 음절에 적절한 강세를 두고 한 어절을 짧게 끊어서 툭툭 내뱉는 듯한 보컬은 멜로디뿐만 아니라 리듬을 연주해 낸다. 고음부에서 열창하는 후렴구(업계 용어로 ‘싸비’)가 없어도 멜로디가 인상적인 이유는 그의 보컬의 특징과 무관치 않다. 그 점에서 그는 ‘가수 신중현’의 후예다.
그렇지만 이 앨범의 실질적 주인공은 기타 연주자 지덕엽이다. 불행히도 직업적 음악인의 경력을 걷지 않으면서 묻혀진 인물이 되었지만 그의 기타 사운드는 독특하기 그지없다. 똑똑 떨어지는 리프를 연주하다가 보컬이 등장하면 대선율을 만들어 내거나 깔짝거리는 스트러밍을 분주하게 하는 기타를 듣는 것만으로도 흥미롭다. 1970년대 영미 하드 록 밴드의 기타리스트의 영향이 강하고 실제로 몇몇 곡에서의 리프는 영미 록 음악의 명곡으로부터의 영향을 느낄 수 있지만(예를 들어 “처음부터 사랑했네”는 “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”를, “탈춤”은 “Smoke on the Water”를 각각 연상시킨다), 이 점에 대해 ‘응용을 통한 재창조’라고 말하지 않는다면 인색한 일일 것이다. 게다가 지덕엽의 기타는 거장적 기타리스트의 과시적이고 마초적인 기교와는 거리를 두고 노래와의 조화를 모색한다는 점에서 ‘밴드(그룹)의 기타리스트가 어떠해야 하는가’라는 전범을 보여준다고까지 말할 수 있을 것이다. 이런 점에 대해 ‘그럴 만한 실력이 없었기 때문’이라고 말할 수도 있겠지만 의도와는 무관하게 결과에 대한 평은 불변이다. 한마디로 그의 기타 연주는 지혜롭고 명석하다. 한편 기타와 동일한 리프를 연주하다가 활발한 리듬을 만들어내는 베이스나 자칫 엉성해지기 쉬운 사운드의 빈 구석을 채우는 야마하 키보드도 순망치한의 역할을 해내고 있다. 특히 기타와 베이스가 서로 갈라지고 합쳐지는 것을 듣는 재미가 있다.
한편 이 앨범에는 직접 연주한 사람 외에 배후의 실력자들이 존재한다. 다름 아니라 작사와 작곡을 맡은 인물들이다. 그 가운데 주목할 만한 인물은 이응수와 라원주인데, 이응수는 여섯 곡의 작사를, 라원주는 두 곡의 작사와 다섯 곡의 작곡을 맡았다. 어떻게 본다면 이 앨범은 ‘항공대의 레논-매카트니’라고 부를 만한 ‘이응수-라원주의 작품집’이라고 해도 지나친 말이 아니다. 물론 직접 연주한 멤버들 가운데서도 지덕엽이 세 곡의 작곡을, 김종태가 한 곡의 작사를(“탈춤”)을 맡았다. 배철수가 작사와 작곡을 한 곡도 하지 않았다는 점이 놀랍지만 사실이다. 어쨌든 이 음반이 4명의 작품집을 넘어서 하나의 음악 공동체에서 오랫동안 축적된 결과물이라는 점을 알아내기는 어렵지 않다.
개별 곡에 대해 설명한다면 “처음부터 사랑했네”, “탈춤”, “그대” 등 거칠게 몰고 가는(‘하드 드라이빙’한) 곡들이 항공대표(標) 스타일을 정착시킨다. 두 말하면 잔소리지만 뒤에 송골매에서 배철수가 보컬을 담당한 곡으로 계승되는 특징이다. 이들과 양식은 유사하지만 “이빠진 동그라미”는 12마디의 단순한 악곡형식이 여러 절로 반복되면서 서사를 들려주고(이 곡은 여러 면에서 작은 거인의 “일곱 색깔 무지개”와 더불어 한 시대의 한 감성을 표현한다), “누군가 왔나봐”는 훵키한 셔플 리듬을 구사하고(블랙 테트라의 영향일까?), “친구를 회상하며”는 영락없는 고고 리듬에 처연한 가락을 얹는다(휘버스의 영향일까?). 신인치고는 개별 곡에 탄력을 부여하는 재주가 놀랍다.
이런 곡들과는 영 다른 스타일의 곡도 있다. ‘슬로우 록’ 리듬 위에서 플랜저 이펙트를 입힌 기타 아르페지오가 등장하는 “회상”은 이들이 1960년대 말 ~ 1970년대 초 그룹 사운드 붐에 영향받았다는 발언을 확증해 주는 트랙이며, 대학가요제 동기생 황은미가 작곡한 “우리들의 젊음”은 멀리는 버즈(The Byrds), 가까이는 4월과5월의 ‘싸이키델릭 포크 록’을 듣는 듯한 알딸딸한 곡이다(아마도 도리언 선법을 응용한 듯한 독특한 코드 진행 탓일 것이다). 이 곡과 더불어 “누군가 왔나봐”에서는 이들의 히트곡인 “세상 모르고 살았노라”나 “탈춤”에서는 느낄 수 없던 복잡한 코드웍이 전개된다.
이런 복잡한 음악의 추구는 마지막 트랙에 배치된 문제작인 “탈”에서 절정을 이룬다. 울어대는 기타가 이끄는 전주에서 Em와 G 다음에 B♭이 등장하는 코드 진행이 뭔가 심상치 않더니 역시나 10분이 넘게 연주가 계속되고 기타 솔로가 나오는 부분에서는 감화음도 구사된다. 후렴구 부분의 코드 진행은 신중현식 작곡법도 엿볼 수 있다. 뭐랄까 활주로식 “Child in Time”이라고 할 만한 대곡으로, 라이터를 깜박대다가 손을 양쪽으로 흔들어대는 공연에 어울릴 만한 곡이다. 가사는 ‘탈춤’에서 ‘춤’이 빠진 것처럼 자아성찰이라는 의미 있는 테마를 담고 있다.
물론 여러 가지 결함들이 없는 것은 아니다. 악기들의 톤은 ‘녹음을 좀 더 잘했으면…’이라는 아쉬움을 던진다. 어떤 트랙에서는 왼쪽 스피커에 오르간, 오른쪽 스피커에 기타가 배치되었다가 다른 트랙에서는 배치가 바뀌는 일도 녹음과정의 실수가 아니라고 보기는 힘들다. 앞에서는 미덕만을 논했지만 개별 악기의 연주도 특정한 곡에서는 잘 어울리지 않을 때가 있다. 그렇지만 사운드의 재미와 메시지의 의미, 혹은 이유 없는 반항과 의식 있는 고뇌를 동시에 달성한 작품으로서 손색이 없다. 송골매가 산울림과는 또다르게 ‘주류 엔터테이너’로 간주되어 평단과 매니아로부터 홀대받았다는 점을 고려한다면, 이 음반을 다시 들어볼 가치는 충분하다. 아마도 그 생각은 수정될 것이라고 믿는다. 20030918 | 신현준

1. 본인들의 의사와 달리 이 음반은 ‘학창시절의 기념작품’에 그치지 않았다. 거대한 두 개의 바위 사이에 굵은 자갈들이 놓여 있고 자갈들 틈새에 뿌리를 내린 한 떨기 작은 꽃이 있다. 보기에 따라서 1970년대 구미의 프로그레시브 록 음반의 표지를 연상할 수도 있는 표지다. 불모의 땅에서 꽃을 피우려는 의지였을까.
2. 1997년 CD로 재발매된 음반(JCDS-0624)과 수록곡의 배치가 다르다. 한편 1979년 테이프로 발매된 음반(JCS-1445)은 CD와 순서가 동일하다.

Commemorative record of the campus group that achieved both fun and meaning
There are some views of groups that are rooted in campus group sound, "splundered through mass media." But unless that is their "intention" or "strategy," this view is only valid for less than half. It was fortunate that they released their album album in the late 1970s after the boom of the college student song festival hosted by the broadcasting station, but it would have been no more than a celebratory record from school. The lineups of the 10 major musical instrumental bands of the band are Bae Cheol-soo (drums, vocals), Ji-deok Yeop (guitar), Park Hong-il (bass), and Kim Jong-tae (keyboard). In fact, it is a 'joint rider', probably due to complex circumstances such as luck, enlistment, and returning to school. The most prominent of these is Bae Chul-soo. Apart from his unique character, it's only natural that the spotlight goes to the lead vocal, while tuning the overall rhythm with the drums. However, the real protagonist of this album is guitar player Ji-deok Yeop. Unfortunately he became a buried figure without going through the career of a professional musician, but his guitar sound is unique. 한국락계의 가장 중요한 앨범중 하나이자 최고의 앨범으로도 뽑는 사람이 있을 정도로 중요한 앨범입니다.독재자 박정희의 광기가 극에 달한 70년대 말은 암울한 시대이면서 음악계에도 암울함이 가득한 시절이었습니다.70년대 중반부터 소위 대마초 파동. 요즘 음악계에서는 독재자의 대중문화 탄압으로 불리는게 좋겠지요.독재자 세력이 좋아했던 소위 왜색 뽕짝이 아니면 어디서건 방송이나 무대를 못 올랐을 시절이었는데, 그 당시에 고고 클럽을 주름잡던 수많은 밴드들은 이 박정희의 대중문화 탄압으로 전멸되다시피 했고, 이 텅빈 대중음악계가 그대로 죽는듯 했지만 이런 상황을 대학생들을 중심으로한 포크, 락 밴드들이 새로 꽃을 피게되었습니다.특히 락계는 산울림, 활주로, 작은거인등 개성만점의 밴드들이 나왔는데, 활주로 역시 70년대 말 대학생 락밴드중중심적인 밴드로 자리메김 합니다.이러한 락 밴드들이 나올 수 있는 바탕에는 신중현을 중심으로한 소위 고고 밴드들이 뿌린 씨앗이라고 할 수 있는데요.기존의 밴드들이 번안곡이나 카피곡을 많이 앨범에 수록한데 반해, 대학생 밴드들의 경우는 번안곡이 아닌 자신들의개성만점의 자작곡들을 수록하게 되는데요. 활주로 역시 모든곡이 자작곡으로 되어 있습니다.거기다 이 당시 밴드들의 특징중 하나를 뽑으라면 기존 세대에 대한 반감과 왜색 뽕짝으로 물든 가요계를 나름 정화하자는 느낌이 역시 강했는데요.이러한 특징은 고스란히 한국적락이라는 느낌을 추구하게 되는데, 산울림 같은 경우 초기는 청자같은 한국적 락을하였고, 작은거인 김수철의 경우는 말 할 필요도 없이 작은 거인 시절뿐만 아니라 그의 솔로 생활까지 가장 한국적인 대중음악을 하는 뮤지션으로 큰 족적을 남겼으며, 활주로 역시 한국적인 락음악을 후신 밴드인 송골매까지 이어서 대표적인 활주로, 송골매식한국적 락을 완성하는등 상당히 음악적으로도 튼튼한 모습을 보여줍니다.재미있는 사실중 하나는 이 앨범의 드럼을 배철수가 하고 있는데, 원래 배철수는 기타 보컬로 유명한데 이 앨범에서는드럼과 보컬을 소화하고 있는데, 이들이 처음 세상에 나왔던 78년 해변 가요제를 준비하던중, 드러머가 갑작스럽게
탈퇴를 하는 바람에 기타 보컬이었던 배철수 아저씨가 드럼을 쳤다고 하네요.여담입니다만 드럼은 거의 쿵빡 밖에는 잘 못친다는 이야기를 하시네요^^.... 이 앨범에서 가장 눈여겨 들을 것은 지덕엽씨의 기타입니다. 화려한 기타테크닉을 보여주는것은 전혀 없습니다만
하나의 흐름으로 한국적인 락을 표현하는데 기가막힌 플레이를 들려주는데요.대표적인 한국락의 리프라고 불리우는 처음부터 사랑했네의 인상적인 리프나 탈춤의 편곡등은 정말 한국적락 기타플레이가 어떤것인가를 알고 싶은 사람에게 교과서와도 같은 플레이라고 할 수 있습니다.
재미있는것은 활주로의 경우 그 당시 살벌한 독재가 있을때 대학생 특유의 비꼼이 앨범 안에서 맴돌고 있는데요.이것을 놓치는 사람들도 많지만 그 은유적인 비꼼은 결코 현실도피적이지 않음을 내세우는 그들의 장점이라고할 수 있습니다.그리고 중요한 것중 하나는 비록 앨범에 참가는 하지 않았지만 활주로 맴버였고, 비록 군대로 인해 앨범에 참가하지못했지만 아주 훌륭한 가사를 쓴 이응수씨의 기가막힌 가사가 이 앨범의 급을 달리해줍니다.
