산이슬 - Mountain Dew (Sanyiseul)
I find this album a bit more difficult to categorise. While this is leaning towards the mainstream of the Western based song music tradition rooted in the 50s and further evolutions towards to 60s and some of the 70s, with lush orchestrations and beautiful dual vocal harmonies, and there are a few of the kind of lullabies for adults involved, and a few lighter uptempo sweetening pop songs, it sounds like sincere interpretations and perhaps inspirations. There are some associations with 60s pop and pop/rock band arrangements too, paired with the orchestrations. For it’s genre it is a very enjoyable, unpretentious album.

통기타와 장발, 청바지.. 포크 음악은 70년대 청춘들에게 해방구였다.
요즘 70년대 통기타 문화의 상징인 세시봉 열풍이 드세다. 당시의 문화와 정서를 기억하는 중장년층은 물론 디지털세대인 20, 30대 젊은이들까지 가세하여 그 복고의 기세는 좀처럼 수그러들 줄 모른다. 한때의 우상이던 세시봉을 대표하는 가수들의 공연마다 성황을 누리며 이들의 음악이 새삼 화제를 이뤄 신세대까지 합류하게 된 열풍 근원은 무엇일까? 통기타와 장발, 청바지로 대변되는 70년대 청춘들에게 포크 음악은 시대의 암울함으로 인해 통제되고 억눌린 열정을 해소할 수 있는, 다시 말해 음악이 있어 자유로운 우드스탁, 우리식의 해방구였다. 시대의 아픔과 사유적인 일상들을 지금껏 들어보지 못한 그들만의 어법으로 표현한 가락에 대중들은 열광했고, 통기타 하나에 결집하여 소리모아 둥글게 부르는 합창들이 골방에서, 교정에서, 거리에서, 이 산하 어디에서나 울려 퍼졌다. 퇴폐와 반체제적이라는 이유로 옥죄고 강압적 금지조치를 당했지만 오히려 주옥같은 음악의 정수들이 이 시기에 집중하여 탄생하는, 포크가요의 르네상스 시절이기도 하다. 누군가 음악과 관련된 모든 것은 기억이고 이야기라고 했다. 맞다. 우리가 살아온 시절의 자화상이 음악에 담겨 있다. 따라서 오래된 좋은 음악을 듣는다는 것은 우리가 잊고 살아온 세상,감성의 지층에 화석처럼 보존된, 저마다 심연의 깊은 울림이 되살아나는 체험이기도 하다. 현재의 아날로그 복고 열풍은 청년문화를 경험한 세대들에게 지난 시절 추억의 편린들을 꿰맞춰 회상하는 마음으로 다가서고, 반면에 경험하지 못한 젊은이들은 그 아날로그적 낭만에 대한 동경과 진정성에 대한 공감이 따스하게 와 닿기 때문이다. 결국 좋은 음악이란 신구세대를 아우르는 치유와 합일의 덕목을 갖추었음을 최근의 현상이 대변하고 있다. 때마침 보석 같은 음악으로 채워진 여성 듀오 산이슬의 음반이 CD로 재출시 된다. 이 음반에 수록된 산이슬의 대표곡을 통해 음악과 함께 했던 내 어릴 적 그리운 벗들과 옛사랑을 다시 만나고 가슴 따뜻하게 아니면 아린 가슴으로 희미한 추억을 되새겨보자.

“돌이”, “각시”, “장독”, “탱자나무 울타리”, “각시 되어 놀던 나” 등의 순박한 단어에서 60, 70년대 어린 시절을 살아 온 중장년층은 누구나 자연스레 자신의 유년기를 회상하게 된다. 이농현상으로 돌이도 순이도 떠나버린 정든 고향을 아득히 그려보는 어릴 적 유년의 집이 오롯이 담겨있다. 이 곡은 80년대 “연인들의 이야기”를 부른 임수정과 “아베마리아”의 김승덕을 발굴하는 등 다수의 히트곡을 내고 현재까지 활발한 창작을 하고 있는 작곡가 계동균의 작품이다.

또한 “밤비야”는 어떤가? 안타깝고 애틋한 청년기의 서정이 느껴지는 노래로 서주의 인상적인 코드진행은 필자의 서툰 기타솜씨조차 돋보이게 하여 친구들과 모이면 항상 연주하고 부르던, 애창곡 목록에서 빠지지 않던 곡이다. 1절은 주정이가, 2절은 박경애가 번갈아 부르는데 각자의 개성 있는 음색과 후렴구의 화음이 멋지다. 이 음반은 전반적으로 “밤비야”의 방기남 곡들이 다수를 차지하는데 당대의 친숙한 올드팝을 번안한 3곡 중 “사랑의 오솔길”, “손에 손을 잡고”등도 꽤나 전파를 타고 많이 알려졌다. 이렇듯 산이슬의 노래는 기억 속 탱자나무 울타리에 숨어 있다가 몽글몽글 피어올라 지나버린 과거의 아련한 추억을 떠올려준다. 정든 고향을 떠나며 소꿉동무와 이별하는 모습도, 밤비 내려 젖어드는 후줄근한 마음도, 떠난 님을 그리워하는 마음조차도 아프거나 눅눅하지 않을 만큼 담담히 노래한다.
인천 출신의 주정이 박경애는 산이슬이라는 팀명으로 73년 결성되어 “마지막 남은 것”이란 곡으로 데뷔했다. 이 곡은 Neil Diamond, Marianne Faithful, Anne Murray등 많은 포크&컨츄리 뮤지션들에 의해 불렸고 또한 누가 불러도 좋았던 Tom Paxton의 명곡 ‘Last Thing On My Mind’를 번안한 노래인데 친구가 기타를 치며 들려주던 이 노래를 처음 듣고 단번에 사로잡혀 기타를 배우게 된 사연이 있는.... 필자에게 “기억과 이야기”로 남아있는 곡이다. 이름처럼 맑고 고운 음색으로 순수의 동화 같은 노래들 들려줬던 산이슬은 76년 서라벌 레코드를 통해 발매된 본 작을 히트시키며 대중에게 널리 사랑을 받았다. 포크와 컨츄리적인 요소를 두루 갖췄으되 저항적이거나 진보적이거나 은유하지 않았으며 삶의 깊은 성찰조차 담담하고 순수하게 바라보는 삶의 이야기를 아름다운 서정으로 노래했다. 그래서 이 음반에는 수수한 이웃집 누이를 마주한 것 같은 친근함이 가득하다. 활발히 활동하던 산이슬은 77년 각자 솔로음반을 내며 돌연 해체하게 되는데, 서글서글한 용모와 시원한 가창력이 돋보인 박경애는 ‘곡예사의 첫사랑’, ‘상처’등의 곡을 히트시키며 인기 가수의 반열에 올랐으나 안타깝게 2004년 폐암으로 타계했으며, 상큼한 용모와 음성이 매력적인 주정이는 애마부인의 주제가 ‘서글픈 사랑’이 주목받는 등 3장의 독집 음반을 낸 후 활동을 중단했다가 2009년 타이틀곡 ‘내 잘못이야’를 들고 29년 만에 대중에게 돌아왔다. LP나 CD처럼 음반을 “소유”하는 시절은 가고 음원만이 “소비”되는 시대에 35년의 먼 세월을 돌아 내 앞에 선 누이 같은 산이슬.... 현실의 삶이 각박하고 치열할수록 옛 시절의 포실한 낭만이 더욱 그리운 요즘 이 아날로그적 감성으로 충만한 이 앨범이 반갑다. 그 따스한 훈기가 널리 퍼졌으면 한다. 이들의 데뷔곡 ‘마지막 남은 것’의 후렴구 “이제 세월은 덧없이 흘러가고 추억도 멀리 희미한데 내 가슴속에 남은 그 님의 얼굴“처럼 저마다의 가슴에 돋을 새김처럼 선명한 우리들 젊은 날의 초상을 만나보자.

CONCLUSION:
This is a fine album to collect of tasteful dual vocal folk-pop and arranged guitar folk songs. There are some greater moments but the feeling of the album overall keeps an atmosphere (rooted in heady of the 60s) which is pretty enjoyable.
