송만수는 어떤 경로로 데뷔했는지 조차 알려진 바가 없는 베일에 가려진 가수이다. 그의 유일한 독집도 실물을 직접 본 사람이 거의 없기에 발굴에 가깝다. 이 앨범의 가치는 맛깔난 노래와 어마어마한 가격에 거래되는 희귀음반이라는 점도 있지만 신중현이 다른 가수에게 곡을 주고 편곡 작업을 한 최초의 작편곡집이라는 점에서 광채를 발한다. 비록 대중적으로 각광을 받지 못한 비운의 앨범이지만 1970년대에 흥행보증수표로 통했던 신중현 브랜드의 가치는 이 앨범으로부터 시작되었다는 점에서 너무나 중요한 앨범이다.
My review:
It’s good to see that a label has been established that seems to be willing to release all albums related with Shin Yung Hyun, the real godfather of Korean rock and psychedelic music, composer, band leader and electric guitarist. The album itself is mostly sought-after especially because it contains the earliest appearance of the mark Shin-Jung Hyun was going to bring to the music market.
Although I expected a mixture of Twist and crooners from early 60s style that was common like in the popular styles of recordings in the west, it turns out that this is a truly enjoyable album that indeed fits within that time and era. I am not the best person to describe very too exactly those early rock’n roll styles of songs. But I can say and notice that the tastefully performed first three songs have extra sax and piano rhythms added to the more rhythmic groove or otherwise more smooth rhythm of such songs. There are also some known covers that are either‘slows’or otherwise twisting rockers translated into Korean, like the warm song of “Unchained Melody”(by The Righteous Brothers), which received some female backing vocals as well, or the more groovy "Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs. The slow song after that isn’t too different in style from the ‘slow’ we heard before, fits well and could have been another cover, and perhaps is also is one. The song after that, with its march-rolling rhythm and backing vocal arrangements sound a bit like a movie song of a soldier leaving shore soon. And it seems indeed to be the Vietnam-related song, so musically it also shows its message well. After that, we have another smooth and‘slow’one (piano rhythms, warm ohoo backing vocals,..). We have also a James Brown cover, partly sung in Korean,“I got you”(I feel good) which is more in a kind of rock’n roll style with a bit more screaming vocals, nicely performed. After that it brings us back to another slower song after that, still fitting and remaining consistent in style to the general mood on the LP. After one more nice and smoothly played twist track, the last cover of the album is known from Bobby Vinton, “Mr. Lonely”, which turns out to be the last slow but also an even more romantic moment of the album.

한국 록의 대부 신중현의 첫 작편곡집 구하기 힘든 희귀음반을 품에 안게 될 때마다 전율을 느낀다. 음반을 수집해 본 사람이라면 공감이 가는 이야기일 것이다. ‘신중현’이란 이름 석 자가 들어간 앨범은 가요음반수집가들 사이에서는 콜렉터스 아이템으로 정평이 나 있다. 실제로 60년대에 발매된 신중현 음반들은 개체수가 워낙 극소수라 대부분 실물을 직접 보기가 너무나 힘들다. 대중가요 LP수집의 화두인 신중현 음반 중 딱 한 번 실물을 보았지만 엄청난 고가라 구입을 포기해 마음이 쓰렸던 음반이 있다. 최근 그 음반을 한 근현대관련 오프 경매에서 발견하고 호흡곤란이 왔다. 아무도 그 음반의 존재를 모를 것이기에 저렴하게 낙찰 받을 생각에 전율이 밀려왔다. 착각이었다. 한 젊은 친구가 핸드폰으로 검색한 후에 마구 덤벼들었다. 결국, 엄청난 대가를 치르고 나서야 그 음반을 품에 안았다. 그 음반은 바로 이번에 180G 한정본 LP와 CD로 재발매된 송만수의 유일한 독집「베트남에서」이다. 만약 가수 송만수의 이름을 기억한다면 신중현사단에 대해 꽤나 관심이 있는 음악애호가일 것이다. 송만수는 한국 소울의 대부 박인수, 연세대 응원단장 출신의 가수 겸 방송 진행자 임성훈과 더불어 신중현이 리드했던 밴드 퀘션스의 객원보컬로 활동했던 가수로만 그동안 알려져 있다. 송만수가 밴드 퀘션스 첫 앨범과 라이브 음반에 객원보컬로 참여하게 된 것은 바로 자신의 첫 독집을 신중현이 작편곡을 해준 인연 때문이었다. 가수 송만수에 대한 구체적 정보는 그 정도가 전부이다. 이 앨범의 재발매 소식과 라이너노트를 의뢰받은 이후, 그에 대한 티끌만한 정보라도 찾기 위해 백방으로 노력했지만 인터뷰 기사 하나조차 찾지 못했다. 그의 이름이 등장하는 기사 한 개를 찾았을 뿐이다. 어쩌면 이 앨범의 발매하게 된 계기에 대한 실마리가 될지도 모른다. “송만수는 1966년 11월 30일 오전 8시 군용기 편으로 파월장병위문 종군연예인단의 일원으로 25일간 베트남으로 떠났다. 단장 박시춘. 현인, 도미, 서영춘, 한명숙, 권혜경, 박재란 등.” 한국은 베트남전쟁이 치열해지기 시작한 1964년부터 휴전협정이 조인된 1973년까지 8년간에 걸쳐 국군을 현지에 파견하였다. 우리는 그들을 파월장병이라 부른다. 우리의 젊은이들이 베트남전쟁에 참전하기 시작하면서 한집 건너 ‘파월장병’을 두게 된 이 땅에서 ‘베트남’은 최대 화두로 떠오르기 시작했다. 당시 베트남과 파월장병을 소재로 한 대중가요들이 무수하게 발표된 사실이 그것을 증명한다. 1968년 이전에 발매된 대중가요 음반들이 그렇듯 이 앨범에도 발매 년도가 표기되어 있지 않다. 그래서 1966년, 1967년으로 제작시기에 대한 혼동이 있지만 음악저작권협회에는 1965년으로 등록이 되어있다. 1965년이라면 신중현이 결성한 에드포가 미8군을 벗어나 일반무대에서 활발한 활동을 벌였지만 큰 반응을 얻지 못하고 해체를 고민했던 해이다. 이 음반의 세션을 에드포가 아닌 당시 미8군 무대에서 활동했던 ‘이동기와 그 악단’이 맡은 이유와도 무관하지 않을 것이다. 1965년 발매된 송만수의 첫 독집은 베트남전쟁에 대한 관심을 뜨거웠던 사회적 분위기에서 발매된 음반 중에 하나이다. 타이틀곡이 ‘록색유니폼’이란 부제를 단 행진곡풍의 <베트남에서>이기 때문이다. 수록된 총 16곡 중 <베트남에서> 등 신중현의 창작곡은 7곡이고 나머지는 외국 팝송을 개사한 번안 곡들로 구성되어 있다. 모든 곡에 영어로 ‘Rock TWIST', 'HILL BILLY', 'BLUES', 'SWING MARCH', 'JAZZ SAMBA' 등으로 다양한 서구의 음악 장르를 표기해 한 것이 시선을 잡아끈다. 앨범은 당시 유행했던 트위스트 열풍을 말해주듯 ROCK Twist인 신중현의 창작곡 <놀랬지요>로 문을 연다. 송만수는 맑은 미성으로 개성 넘치는 가창력을 들려주는 가사 전달이 명징한 장점이 있다. 이어지는 신중현의 창작곡 <그대를 두고 갈때>는 느릿하게 끈적거리는 분위기와 유려한 멜로리가 귀에 감겨 온다. 귀에 익숙한 팝송의 번안 곡들에서도 송만수는 진성과 가성을 넘나드는 수준급의 가창력을 들려준다. 이처럼 송만수는 질감이 다른 다양한 노래를 자신의 스타일로 자유자재로 풀어낸 이 앨범은 ‘이동기와 그 악단’의 수준급 연주와 더불어 시종일관 기분 좋은 감상을 안겨준다. 하지만 팝송 를 번안한 <그대 품에 안길때>가 가사내용이 저속하다는 이유로 금지되며 이 앨범은 당대 대중과의 소통에 실패한다. 송만수는 이 음반을 발매한 이후 파월장병위문 종군연예인단의 일원으로 베트남 현지에서 위문공연을 벌였다. 월남에서 돌아온 송만수는 1970년 신중현의 새로운 밴드 퀘션스에 객원가수로 참여하며 의기투합했다. 퀘션스 정규 1집에서 송만수는 신중현이 작곡한 <그대는 바보>, <명동거리>와 그리고 이미 자신의 첫 독집에서 불렀던 <베트남에서>를 퀘션스의 연주로 다시 녹음해 수록했다. 또한 퀘션스의 시민회관 공연 실황을 담은 라이브앨범에서도 펄시스터즈, 트윈폴리오, 김선이 불렀던 <떠나야할 그 사람>을 다시 불렀다. 송만수는 어떤 경로로 데뷔했는지 조차 알려진 바가 없는 베일에 가려진 가수이다. 그의 유일한 독집도 실물을 직접 본 사람이 거의 없기에 발굴에 가깝다. 이 앨범의 가치는 맛깔난 노래와 어마어마한 가격에 거래되는 희귀음반이라는 점도 있지만 신중현선생이 다른 가수에게 곡을 주고 편곡 작업을 한 최초의 작편곡집이라는 점에서 광채를 발한다. 비록 대중적으로 각광을 받지 못한 비운의 앨범이지만 1970년대에 흥행보증수표로 통했던 신중현 브랜드의 가치는 이 앨범으로부터 시작되었다는 점에서 너무나 중요한 앨범이다. 글 / 최규성 대중문화평론가. 한국대중가요연구소 대표
