Tracks with * I consider essential listens or classics, or tracks to check out for sure because for some reason they seem to stand out as unique moments, which makes them also very suitable for western radioshow airplay. Tracks that are only underlined can be considered fine tracks you might better check out as well, but I am not sure how essential they really are.
This is a really interesting and enjoyable album from early Korean rock, under the influence of rock’n roll, late twist area, at times the pre-Beatles area mostly some tracks more in the crooner/pop song music area. The guitars are attractive and calm, the percussion is interesting as well. They play a bit like a soft rock band with a primitive honesty like in garage rock, but in a more subtle way and also a more sophisticated way of performance, more like a 60s TV show band, while in fact with a more wild, honest and creative side. Some tracks have nice harmony backing vocals, with some small parts of well fitting backing orchestration, and occasional instruments like twist’n roll sax or piano arrangements. The more song/chanson tracks are mostly sung by a female voice. A very enjoyable, rewarding release.

“The songs are quite interesting. Not nearly as "psychedelic" as the Shin Joong-hyun's post-Pearl Sisters stuff. Must more of a pre-Beatles sound (as you would expect in a record coming out in the early 1960s). Most interesting to me, though, is how many of the songs on this album would turn up later. Including the huge hit of 1968, “One Cup Of Coffee” ("Keopi Hanjan"), although on this album it bears the name “Naesogeul Taeneun Gureyo”. “Badatga” also turned up on a Key Boys album, and Seo Yun-seok would sing “Soya Eoseo Gaja”. Anyhow, it is a piece of history and well worth picking up."

The Album- The Add 4' First Album (or sometimes referred to as The Woman in Rain-The Add 4' First Album). The record, which was released in 1963 or 64 depending on where you get your information is very similar in sound to American Surf and Beat music from that era. The Add 4 enlisted the instrumental sound of bands like say, The Ventures, The Surfari's, the Trashmen, and Dick Dale and the Deltones, but managed to lay down some swinging vocals and very catchy (despite my not being able to understand them) vocals. In fact, as I write this review it is occurring to me that this album is not so much psych rock as it is proto-psych rock, in this case manifested as Surf Rock. For fans of the aforementioned bands, Link Wray and the Wraymen, the Chantays, and early Duane Eddy I would highly recommend this album.
The album manages to stray away from strictly fitting into the surf rock genre, thus avoiding being labeled as a simple, derivative record. The album incorporates both violin and flute(which would be a major instrument in later Shin Jung Hyun manifestations) as well as organ tunes into it's repatoire. As far as song length goes, the album really runs the gamut, with catchy 2 minute surf ditties to 12 and half minute long psychedelic surf odysseys (This particular song adding the only accompaniment by a female vocalist on the album). The album straddles the distance between traditional surf music and regional psych/beat music (think Cambodian Psychout! or Cambodia Rocks). A must have for fans of surf, asian beat, and proto psych rock.

I don’t know who did these reissues but this person did some effort in the package but much less in the recording. The person should be a shamed of him/herself delivering a reissue directly recorded from an LP with a turntable that isn’t even well grounded with its electric tension. The same effect is on this LP as well. The music is a bit louder so it is on the edge of being somewhat acceptable. Go for the previous, official reissue and forget this one.

옛날 도롯도 공연을 듣는것과 비슷하다.....(내가 음악적 소양이 부족해서 인지 몰라도) 그러나 40여년 전에 트롯을 이정도로 편곡했다는것은 역시 신선생님은 음악의 귀재 라는 생각밖에 안든다

[에드 훠]의 음악은 비틀즈의 영향이 있긴 하지만, 오히려 크림이나 야드버즈, 롤링 스톤즈와 같은 그룹에서 볼 수 있는 흑인음악의 요소가 더욱 많았다. 이러한 음악적 성향은 [에드 훠] 이후 신중현이 결성한 덩키스, 퀘션스, 더 맨 그리고, 엽전들로 이어지며 더욱 심화되어 블루스를 그 바탕으로 하고 있는 한국적 사이키델릭과, 하드락의 모체가 되었음에 분명하다. 그리고, 이러한 신중현의 활동들은 해외의 검증된 락 넘버들을 커버하며 가능성만을 내재하고 있던 수많은 젊은 밴드들의 활동에도 적지 않은 영향력을 행사했다. 그러한 관점에서 볼 때, 이 한 장의 음반은 신중현이 앨범을 통해 프로 밴드 활동을 처음 시작했다는 점 이외에도 ‘대한민국 락 역사의 시작’을 알리는 음반이라는 커다란 의미를 갖는 앨범이다. 물론, 1964년 이들이 행한 락 음악과 현재의 우리가 생각하는 락과는 많은 차이가 있긴 하지만 말이다. 대한민국 락 역사는 첫 트랙인 ‘비속의 여인’으로 시작한다. 김목경, 김건모 등에 의해 다시 불려지며, 세대를 초월한 사랑을 받았던 이 곡에서 일단 주목해야 할 부분은 이팩트의 부재 때문에 그 선이 얇고 힘이 부족한 아르페지오 리프이긴 하지만, 곡 전체를 관통하는 일정한 리프를 가지고 있다는 점이다. 리프에서 도출해 가는 중반부 기타 애들립도 무척이나 신선하다. 앞서 이야기한 것처럼 초창기 국내의 밴드들은 비틀즈의 영향이 지배적이었고, 보컬리스트로 구성된 그룹들이 많았기 때문에, 처음부터 끝까지 뚜렷한 멜로디 라인이 없이 하모니 보컬 위주의 밴드가 많았다. 하지만, [에드 훠]는 서정길이라는 확실한 객원보컬 체제 아래서 보컬의 솔로 부분과 나머지 멤버들의 코러스 부분이 확실한 경계를 가지고 있다는 점 역시도 귀기울일 만 하다. 이후 ‘늦으면 큰일나요’에서도 등장하는 이러한 보컬과 코러스의 콜 앤 리스펀스는 물론 흑인 음악들에서 많이 이용되는 형태였다. 우체통을 의인화한 가사가 재미있는 ‘우체통’은 당시까지의 관행이었던 기승전결식의 곡 구성이 아니라, 결론에 이어지는 전개라는 새로운 시도가 흥미로운 곡. ‘사랑해’라는 온 국민의 애창곡을 만들었던 라나 에 로스포에 의해서는 포크 넘버로, 김상희에 의해서는 샌프란시스코 풍의 사이키델릭 넘버로 편곡된 바 있었던 ‘사랑의 상처’는 애니멀즈의 영향을 짙게 풍기는 흑인 성향의 슬로우 넘버이고, 열악한 녹음환경이긴 하지만, 악기의 특성들을 최대한 살려 녹음된 ‘소야 어서 가자’도 흥미롭다. 한편 서정길 이외에 또 한명의 객원보컬이 이 음반을 통해 데뷔를 하게 되는데, 이후 ‘안녕하세요’로 국민가수의 반열에 들어서게 되는 장미화가 ‘천사도 사랑을 할까요’와 ‘굳나잍 불을 끕니다’에 참여한 것이 그것이다. 장미화의 창법에서 다이애나 로스와 같은 흑인 풍의 감성을 감지한 신중현은 그녀에게 슈프림스와 같은 여성 중창팀의 조직을 제안했고, 장미화는 이후 ‘안녕하세요’를 히트시킬 때까지 중창단의 멤버로 해외활동을 벌이기도 했다. 이 음반에 장미화가 참여한 두 곡은 패키지쇼에 어울릴 만한 스탠더드 넘버들이다. ‘그리운 그 님아’는 당시 유행하던 소위 XX부기풍의 기타 연주곡에 보컬을 붙인 스타일의 곡. 펄 시스터즈에 의해서 온 국민의 애청곡으로 거듭나는 ‘커피 한잔’의 원곡이라고 할 수 있는 ‘내 속을 태우는구려’의 도입부 역시도 앞서 ‘비속의 여인’과 같은 리프가 등장한다. 비슷한 시기에 국내에 나왔던 가요들에서는 상상도 하지 못할만한 가사가 등장하는 곡으로, 중반부 찰랑거리는 올갠사운드 역시 체크 포인트. ‘나도 같이 걷고 싶네’는 이후 임성훈이 ‘명동거리’라는 제목으로 발표했던 곡이다. 신중현의 기타 애들립은 재즈에서 락으로 변모해가던 시절 해외의 많은 기타리스트들의 연주를 연상시킨다. B면의 뒷부분으로 갈수록 스탠더드 풍의 곡들이 많이 등장하긴 하지만, 그 역시도 당시의 유행가들과는 그 성격이 확실하게 다른 곡들이다. 특히 쓸쓸한 토요일 밤은 전형적인 블루스 인트로 기타연주를 가진 슬로우 넘버로, 다소 평이한 듯한 보컬만 아니었다면, 국내에서 통용되던 부루쓰가 아닌 확실한 블루스 넘버가 되었을 법한 곡이다. [에드 훠]는 이 음반 이외에도 자신들의 이름으로 몇 장의 음반을 더 발표했다. 하지만, 해외의 곡들을 벤처스풍으로 편곡해 수록한 ‘경음악’ 앨범들이라는 점이, 의욕과 재능으로 시작했던 그 시작을 잇지 못했다는 아쉬움을 남겼다. 이후 신중현은 블루즈테트를 거쳐 덩키스의 활동을 통해 [에드 훠]의 데뷔앨범에서 보여줬던 국내 락에 대한 가능성을 현실로 만드는 작업을 이어가게 된다. 신중현이 했던 락 음악의 길은 사실 독학의 길이었다. 물론, 지금의 상황도 크게 달라지지는 않았다고 하겠지만, 그가 걸어왔던 길은 그냥 독학의 길이 아니라, 무에서 유를 창조해 내며 역사를 만들어 가는 과정이었다. 현재 우리가 그저 입버릇처럼 하는 말인 ‘국내 락 음악의 대부’ 는 표현은 그가 거쳐왔던 이러한 과정들 때문에 더욱 소중한 것이며, 단지 ‘미인’과 ‘아름다운 강산‘을 만들어 불렀다는 단편적인 사실에서 기인한 것만이 아니다. 이번에 재발매 되는 음반이 가지는 의미 역시도 잃어버렸던 역사 퍼즐의 가장 중요한 부분을 채웠다는 데에서 더욱 크다고 할 수 있다. 글 송명하 (파라노이드 편집장)

Shin's first band, Add4, was released in 1964, the same year as Key Boys' debut album, but it's a little later. However, while most of Key Boys 'albums were revised songs for overseas rock music, [Add4]' s debut albums were all composed by Shin Ji-hyun. It is a precious record from which our rock music made by our hands began.
It was in 1962 that Shin Shih-hyun first formed Ed Wong to leave the Eighth Army stage and advance to the general stage. The band's name is dominated by guitar chord terminology, but Fab 4, the Beatles' nickname at the time, can be recalled. On the surface, it's not as blatant as the phrase "Korean Key Boys!" Written on Key Boys' records, but in [Add4] the Beatles in all aspects, including the band name, its organization, and the costumes that appear in the jacket's photos. Influence was dominant. However, the music of Key Voice and [Add4], which tried to become the “Beatles of Korea,” in addition to the external aspects, are a little different. Ed Wong's music was influenced by the Beatles, but there were more elements of black music found in groups such as Cream, Yard Birds and Rolling Stones. This musical propensity is obviously the result of Ed Shim's formation of Dunkies, Quests, The Man, and Yeopjeon, which further deepened and became the mother of Korean psychedelic and hard rock based on the Blues. And Shin Jung-hyun's activities covered many of the world's proven rock numbers and exerted a significant influence on the activities of many young bands who had only inherent possibilities.
