사랑하는 사람을 앞에 세워 놓고도 사랑한다는 말 한마디를 끝끝내 하지 못하고 돌아서야 하는 안타까운 사나이의 심정을 슬프게 호소하는 노래이다. 1957년 오아시스 레코드사가 불황에 허덕이는 가요계를 향해 자신만만하게 내놓은 노래이다. 당시 인기 절정의 작곡가 손석우가 흐느끼는 듯 낮은 손시향의 저음을 기용하여 아무런 부담 없이 있는 그대로의 역량을 보여준 사랑의 소품이다.
